About
Heard of the Story? is a cosy medieval city-building simulation game with intelligent and quirky villagers who think, reason, and tell their own unique tales.
The game is about forging your own medieval town, community, and relationships with procedural characters that really feel alive, self-aware, and grounded in your world. Embark on an adventure with them to transform a few sticks and pebbles into a beautiful prospering town from the ground up. Alternatively, simple sit back and watch as your townsfolk discover their passions, spread rumours, or divulge captivating stories with you and between each other.
Explore the landscape to find and gather the resources you need in order to build your town. Craft your way up to an expert, perhaps you can be their blacksmith?
Develop a town organically by architecting your roads or structures without a grid. Beautify the surroundings with decorations whilst your villagers spice up their gardens.
Each building changes the life of your villagers one step at a time. Could the Lion & Crow be your friend's next favourite tavern? Or the Chiselled Bellows the smithy they discover themselves in?
Strengthen your reputation by constructing the right amenities, enough fields and accommodation, and entice foreigners to join - grow without a limit!

Villagers are autonomous and independent. Apart from starting new construction projects, they can do anything you can. Each has their own interests, goals, achievements, needs, and traits.
Talk to villagers to discover their lore, (sometimes) get helpful advice, or learn about their conspiracy theories. Your learnings are jotted down in your journal as you uncover more.
Each interaction they have with the world forms an experience which shapes their personality. Reveal how they changed and evolved through listening to their quirky stories.
Deepen the mutual bond by helping them with their troubles. Or don't, and tell them they look ugly instead - we won't judge! (but villagers may)

Cooperate with your townsfolk as they help construct new buildings or trade with them to get the items you need.
Watch villagers specialise into different skilled crafts like carpentry or horticulture. Unlock your society's potential by making sure they have all the tools they need to prosper.
When your collective skills don't cut it, merchants and markets can assist you by bringing what you need - at a price. Be careful not to blow your savings on luxurious goods!
Just like you, villagers can talk to each other, build their own relationships (or start their own beef), and make their own exchanges. As they pass on information, they form an emergent interconnected team.

Each map is randomly generated making every playthrough even more unique. Whether you want to build in a valley or a flatland, in a forest or the mountains, the choice is yours!
Find cute, scottish-highland inspired cows loitering around different corners and draw them into your barns to tame them.
World details are also unique to each world, with each having its own regions, towns, family histories. Perhaps you’ll find your rival's sibling joining you as you expand the town.
As time passes, the sun will rise, the stars will show, and the seasons will change. Witness colours and atmosphere shift around you as spring gradually gives way to winter.

Keep warm with a fireplace during winter, or find a colourful place to frolic amidst long grass and arrays of countless flowers during summer. This game is designed to be cosy and stress-free; there are no timed tasks, no harsh penalties, and no combat putting your town at risk. You can challenge yourself to grow a huge town, or play at your own pace and stick to a small cottagecore village, with a few friendly faces.

Games honestly pretty fun. It only came out into early access a few days ago so there are plenty of bugs, but the gameplay loop itself is pretty fun and the artstyle is adorable. The NPC's have amazingly fun quirks(intentional ones, not like bugs or anything) Shasaur is also extremely active in his community and responding to bugs and all that! If you read my old review, the main issue I mentioned was the camera not having any zoom levels. He immediately responded and pushed out an update pretty quickly! Old Review(On Release):I only played for about three minutes, but as it stands this game needs general polish in the term of controls and optimization. The main issue I have with the controls is that THE CAMERA IS FIXED. This issue I had with this in particular is the fact that its at such a distance that the trees perfectly block my view. I'll keep playing but right now thats a major issue for me.
waiting for more
Last Update :) 10 hours later I'm hooked, had another very lovely interaction with the devs and will be playing this a lot more. The things I listed as issues have all been fixed. The only exception is the blue colour and I acknowledge that's a matter of taste and design. I'm happy that for once I actually get to change a review to positive and mean it. There's so many games out there that come out as a mess, stay one and eventually just get forgotten. This one is different and I'm looking forward to everything the team comes up with. Update #2 May 2025 I decided to give this another shot and it wouldn't start. Made a post in the bugfix thread and the dev replied quickly with a solution and by the time I got to read it, they already had the bugfix out as an update. I'm not entirely sure how I'll fare with the gameplay this time around, but it's utterly clear that the dev is working hard to make this a good game and I wish them the best. Update Oct. 2024 (original Review below): I gave it another go. Due to the lack of tutorialization, tools breaking far too quickly and buildings being placeable even if you haven't encountered the required materials yet, I'm still not a fan. But it is worth noting that I didn't run into any bugs this time. I'll give this another try after the full release. We'll see. __ Original Review: Hear me out - there's a lot to love. You can place houses for the villagers wherever you want, you can craft decorations and the interactions with the npcs are cute. However, this is not ready to be in early access due to the insane amount of bugs. 1. An NPC of mine got stuck in a neverending entering-their-house-leaving-their-house-loop. 2. Invisible NPCs (their headwear is still visible, so if you're into ghosts, enjoy I guess) 3. An NPC got fixated on me and no matter what I did, every time I tried to interact with anything, I would get locked into dialog with them again. They'd run up to me from anywhere on the map. I had to just quit to get out of it. Other issues: - The animations are too long and it feels draggy. - There is no way to determine where your buildings are placed on the vertical level, so unless you play with a completely level map, you will constantly have to fiddle around so the front door of your house and other essential parts of buildings don't vanish into the map. - The blue flowers urgently need a reshade. Running through a field of those is absolute eye cancer. - Hitboxes are never indicated. Just vaguely stand in front of things and press space in the hopes that you'll pick up/select/interact with the right thing. I will keep this game and look forward to updates. If things get better, I will happily change my review. But at its current state the game is unfortunately not ready to be played.
very cute so far! i like the option to design the shape of the houses and to rotate all the buildings. Its a little confusing to figure out how to get certain materials and craft things but its not rocket science to figure out. im having fun so far i just wish my villagers had more to say UPDATE 2026: still loving the game! its one of my favorite to play and i cant wait for future content
Took me a while to get a handle of the controls and the way the game works in general. It's cute, cozy and the biggest selling point is the AI villagers. It's pretty good so far, can't wait to see what happens once its more fleshed out.
A very chill and cozy game. I've really enjoyed building my little town and getting to know the villagers. Being an early access game, I'm really excited to see where this goes!
An adorable and relaxing town builder. The villagers will talk to you and help build and decorate their town which makes the town really come alive. Building and gathering is incredibly easy, there's no long grinds or complex research trees (you just learn as your character gets ideas). There are a few minor issues, but discord is super active with bug reports and suggestions being addressed almost immediately.
Very quiet, very good game. It follows well in the footsteps of the giants it mimics, and has its own lovely npc mechanics. I always was frustrated by ACNH villagers contributing chumpchange to community projects, here I feel as though I am only one man in many. Dialog can use some advancing, I get a lot of repeat phrases, but altogether it has been a very enjoyable experience and I will continue to log hours.
No es personalmente mi tipo de juego.
Really awesome and unique game! I've followed the progress of this game for some time and it's turned out even better than what I thought. It had a few little quirks that really make the game-play and I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a fun, chilled gaming session.
