I spent a LOT of time at the Disney theme parks in Orlando as a kid, so naturally when a native VR game was announced that combined my love and nostalgia for all things Disney with my preferred horror genre, with a dash of smart satire and humor, I was pumped! My spirits were dampened when the legion of reviews trashing the game's mechanics and length came out, and the title was relegated to my "wait for sale" bin of dashed dreams. Cue the Steam Summer sale, when a respectable discount on the PCVR version of the game finally brought the game into "impulse try" territory. How did it fare? I'll give you the Good, the Bad, and the Grisly from my experience with the game. THE GOOD: - This game tickled my nostalgia in all the right ways. If you've spent time at the Disney parks you're going to appreciate the little details they got from the parks, the tri-fold map, and of course the iconic rides; they're recreated here in bite-sized chunks in a way that will bring out your inner kid. - There's some really top-notch world building going on in this one; lots of little details like gift shops having realistic amounts of unique merchandise, or restaurants having fully-fleshed out (and hilarious) menus and finding condiment dispensers and trash bins in all the places you'd expect, really bring the whole thing to life and sell it. I legitimately felt like I was in the ruins of a mostly believable park for much of the time. - The music for the rides and films that play throughout the park really nails it and contributes a lot to the atmosphere of the game. - I found this game really funny; its sense of humor is irreverent for sure, and may not be for everyone. I found the satire to be smart and I laughed out loud plenty of times (special shoutout to the 'line-jumper interrogation video' you can optionally watch on a security TV towards the end of the game, it's Raimi-esque in all the right ways). - The brazenness with which the game wears its influences on its sleeve is to be commended; they weren't afraid of Disney's legal department coming at them and just went for it; that's what enables the nostalgia to vibe so hard in this one. - The "spooky but not too scary" atmosphere was great, PERFECT for Halloween, and will open this game up to a wider audience than, say, MADiSON VR--which was brilliant but I can't even recommend to my friends as it's just too much for most people. - There's 80 collectibles hidden around the park that I enjoyed searching for--I think I missed 6 on my first playthrough. - Sitting through the end credits made me realize that this game was built by a VERY small team, and I found it inspiring that so few people were able to create something of this scale. - The length; I finished my first playthrough in just under 3 hours. Many people might view that as a negative, but this game isn't trying to be The Witcher; I personally like bite-sized digestible games, and at this length I might come back to this one annually during October spooky season kind of like the annual pilgrimages I made to Disney World in my youth! - I won't spoil what it is, but there's a set piece in this game that was seriously among the most impressive I've seen yet in VR (and I play a LOT of VR). There were a few rides in the game that I was frustrated and disappointed that I couldn't ride--let's just say that I should've kept the faith and got there in a pretty spectacular way. :} THE BAD: - The combat really isn't much fun and doesn't feel good at all. You're swinging weightless items at tanky enemies that will only sometimes register, and react to, the hits. There's no true sense of physicality, and you're swinging so much and so fast that your arm will probably get sore (mine did). There is SOME merit to the enemies; the models actually look quite decent (even though they get repetitive after awhile), and there's really something to a life-sized combatant running at you in VR that will always be affecting; but ultimately this is probably the weakest part of the game and I think the game would be stronger with it removed completely. - WHY did they feel the need to include mini-golf? There's thankfully just not that much of it, and I actually like that they included a realistic score card, but what's here has terrible ball physics and uninspired courses. Thank goodness your "performance" in these sections doesn't matter (and the scoring doesn't work right with it anyway). No one should be attempting minigolf in VR after Walkabout! - Generally the physics are incredibly janky in the game. Nothing feels like it has any weight; you can waggle the game's weapons around like some 2006 Wii title without penalty. The game forces you to use a grip toggle, which I found unnatural, and when you inevitably drop an item due to wanting to readjust your grip it has a great chance of flying out of the game world--too bad if that was a weapon you needed! Also it's far too easy to knock elements and debris around in the game world when you accidentally touch them with your weapon. I guess kudos to them for having so many interactable elements in the game, though. - The audio mixing on some of the NPC's, oh my God.. without spoiling too much, there are a couple of characters that speak through a radio in the late game that had my ears BLEEDING. Pure staticky treble, about 200% louder than everything else in the game; whoever mixed this game's audio: if you're reading this, shame on you. Seriously. THE GRISLY: - An NPC "Larry" sets up the exposition for the game and for the first 20 minutes or so he does. not. shut. up. Thankfully he goes silent for the middle portion of the game. - The huge compass rose that sits beneath your feet needlessly; this is a game, not a ship--let me turn that off please. - Lack of locomotion options; give me HMD oriented movement PLEASE! - People complaining about motion sickness in VR has always been a pet-peeve of mine; I think it's bad for the medium and such a personal issue: "we get it, you weren't genetically gifted with an 'iron VR stomach' like the rest of us, go chew on some ginger or something NERD and give your VR gear to a more well-adjusted specimen!" Yeah. Well this game made me feel sick as HELL in a couple spots, an experience I can count on one hand since first getting into VR in 2017. You're probably going to want to rapidly blink on a few of these rides to keep your lunch from coming up. Technically impressive that the sense of motion on these rides is convincing enough to make our brain tell our stomachs we've been poisoned, but be warned. Despite the undeniable jank, DOA mini-golf, and tanky uninspired combat, I found a lot more to love in this game's short runtime than not. I'll definitely be back, and that leads me to offer a few suggestions that I'd love to see come to this game in an update (hey I can dream!): - An "Open Park" mode after you've finished the game that opens up the gates/doors in the park and lets you meander the park, riding the rides at will, without having to worry about story beats or tasks to progress (thankfully there does appear to be a ride-select that opens up at the end of the game (or maybe even as you progress?); I haven't yet tested this, but I do feel like there's value in letting players traverse the "lands" freely. - A DLC called "Opening Day" or something that lets you explore the park and ride the rides in the glory days of the park, before it fell into ruin; a soft opening where you're testing the rides or something would eliminate the need to fill the park with hundreds of NPC's. I hope my review helps you decide if Happy Funland is a ride worth taking! Have a Grisly day.
Minus the jankiness with the combat and mini golf, I really enjoyed it. I think what I liked the most is that you can tell this game was a labor of love. There was a lot of creativity and thought put into it. The parks and rides were so well laid out it really was nostalgic at times. I think overall it deserves some love for what it is and what it seeks to do.
I was very excited about this game. (Same developers of Ghost Town Mine Ride) When I started playing this game it was very chanky Controls are not really great.. You just have to drop a flashlight And that immediately launches to the moon.. They solved this problem of putting those flashlights everywhere (But I think this is a bit of a cheap trick) A small inventory is not an unnecessary luxury. The physics That's just really terreble, Everything literally flies to the moon, The fight the animation of the Monsters and animatronics It's more of an idle animation. not much to talk about not really (great about it) (Animation are also some of older game (Ghostride) Some of the animations are funny and cool, but the rest of the combat is just really bad. Combat They're coming. They run towards you and they do one animation to hit you To attack the monsters you just need a simple stock and make the same small movement It's really, really boring.. oh and bots are just screaming... Thats it The graphic The graphics themselves are very good, Great progress from the previous part But I think they could do a little more with the NPCs there to add more Motherboard cables etc (Motors). and more response from touching or hitting (Feedback animation) can be beter. (there is NO option) not so far i have seen) The controls are a wierd thingy.. Index controller NO good support No haptic feed back. That should be the case with this game in this day and age At least they can do finger tracking (grip support) etc And the sound quality is not up to date either.. not much to talk about it. but it's not (Clear) can't explain it well General This game needs to go back in the oven for a while...There are just a lot of things that aren't right To be completely honest, I don't think it's worth it yet. It's a great idea, but a lot of things have to be redone. As soon as there has been a major update and it has been adjusted, I will adjust this Review well.. My advice is put this on Early Access.. for a while and inprove on it/ (Update) 3.1 hours on game (Finish it) conclusion It's really, really bad, Everything just isn't done right Combat is just rough really Rough...Everything just goes straight through npc. No good feedback respond, just loop sound of NPC and running to you. and standing still.. It's just not worth it. It's not horror at all Ghost Town Mine Ride & Shootin' Gallery is much beter!. But this game also re-use some (scary jump moment) copy and paste.. I don't want to offend the developers but this is just really not good This had at least a year left in the oven With the better programmers (I just refund this game)
I only played for 20 minutes and I couldn't stand the obnoxious guy talking nonsense in my ear. I haven't found an option to at the very least change the control style, but anyway there seem to be nothing really to do in terms of vr controls.
I've been enjoying this game. Don't get me wrong, it is janky and has a decent amount of bugs. I've fallen through the map multiple times, lose my flashlight all the time, and actually got a little nauseated when riding one of the rides. All that said it's nice to have a VR game like this, one where I can explore a haunted theme park. If your like me and enjoy exploring VR worlds then give it a shot!
Yes, this game is buggy and the game play mechanics are lousy. But there is so much creativity in the design of the theme park, including the many rides. If weirdness, sexual and grotesque humour is your thing, you will enjoy this plenty. I did!
Wish steam would let me give a "Neutral" or "OK" option for reviews, because whilst it was fun, there are a few negative points that lower it enough for me to want to stay "Neutral / OK". Long story short: Rather fun game with dark humor. Somewhat creepy sometimes but not really "horror" for me. Some minor bugs and a few weird design choices (atrocious melee / golf physics, bunch of collisions missing). I enjoyed the park, it's mood and visuals. It did feel abandoned and somewhat haunted. Enjoyed the various themes and visuals of the areas. Did not encounter many "breaking" bugs, but at some point I did start to float into the sky when I opened the steam overlay. I also was bugged at a point during one of the rides with
the squirrel looking for drugs. Absolutely loved that ride!
. Once it was finished I "spawned" on top of the ride and could not move. Had to restart the game to fix it, wich unfortunately means you have to re-do everything from your last save point (but besides that the save system is fine in my opinion). Definitely enjoyed the various rides / attractions, (except the minigolf parts with the atrocious non-existent "physics" and/or feedback when swinging). Wish there were more indoor rides & that they were longer (as well with silly interactibles
Like shooting with the pirate ride
or
you having to get off the ride like with the haunted house
) Love the dark humor. Definitely tongue in cheek. The Story is also silly but fun, which fits the game, but I do kind of wish they fleshed it out more. I do have some "questions" left after playing as to why or what.
Like what's up with the Disney rat mascot - Randy Rodent? Why is it there? is it a robot or something more since ghosts seem to exist. Was it created to become the body of the park owner? Additionally, every time you run into Randy, it just runs away scared but it suddenly kills you at the end when you choose the "wrong" option at the burger joint. I want to say I survived worse in the park but ah well. Did I perhaps miss a part where the park owner enters that body or something?
However besides that there are a few negative points which makes the score "neutral" for me 1) Price vs completion time (& replayability). I finished it in 3.2 hours taking my time. Honestly price wise it's a bit too much in my opinion for the duration (and whilst not bad, there's no replayability in my opinion besides achievement hunting if you're into that). And yes, I understand a real-life movie ticket is also about the same price but still. 2) The melee and golf "physics" are atrocious and severely outdated like VR just came out and they don't know what to do with melee. Melee feels like Wii Sport Boxing where you swing like a maniac since any other move just doesnt work. I tried exaggerating my swings, slowing them down, just poking forward like with fencing but it always just felt like it does not matter what I do it stays atrocious. You hear a "hit" and some sparks, sometimes the enemy falls but it just feels like i'm wipping around a stick of cotton or something. There's no "oomph" and you're just...swinging. Sometimes the enemies just stand there, looking at me and judging me trying to bash their heads in. Golf is the same, there's no feedback on the putter, it goes through the floor and the ball also has no weight. Sometimes edges or whatever on the course cause the ball to either stop entirely or fly out of the course. I know that Walkabout Minigolf spoiled me but still. I HATED the golf parts. 3) lots of missing collisions. There's a lot of items that are missing their collisions and thus I can walk in areas I definitely shouldnt. Also messes with some of the enemies & their pathing (especially if I unknowingly back up through some wall or object). 4) Where are all my options? They did add smooth turning in the first patch, but why was this not in the game anyway? Where's my audio settings if I want to lower something? Sometimes the ingame audio / music was so loud that I couldn't understand my friends in discord. And yes, I know that I could've changed it in windows itself, but seriously, why can't I adjust ingame volume in the game? Also the same with any graphics settings. Performance was fine and did not have any issues but still, rather weird I can't lower all settings if my PC couldn't handle it. 5) Collision is super wonky. Items have no weight so you can just yeet some things into space. Also the hands can sometimes "grab" things but not everything. And some items that are not grabbable just...yeet themselves out of there sometimes if you try to interact with it. Same is also happening when you drop whatever you are holding. If you're lucky it's a meter away, if you're unlucky it's in the shadow realm from now on. All in all I did enjoy myself, but it should've been in the oven a bit longer and they definitely need to look at their melee / physics engine if they can (if it exists). Melee and golf is just NOT FUN (for me). Price wise i'm still on the fence. I want to say 20 euro is a lot better than the 25 it currently is, but I can also understand the work that went into it. It is still a bit short though, and no replay value (for me). Might use the attractions as a VR showcase to (new) friends though that rather sit down and experience it. all in all a 7/10. Maybe higher due to the story and people sometimes sh*ttalking to me. Loved the humor.
Fun, inventive game with some really heavy theming that's marred by a janky collision and movement system. The locomotion is nausea inducing and this is coming from someone that never gets sick in VR. WAYYYYY too much minigolf for my taste. Still, worth the cost if only to explore a non-Disney related Theme park.
