Two thousand years ago, the Pestis Disaster swept through the land, corrupting all living things and making it to difficult to live on the land. Having touched the darkest darkness the world has seen, one must now face the dazzling light. Thus I pose this question. Whose wings did I see that day?

Game is censored, even with the uncut patch. Regardless of that it's pretty interesting, though I felt it was a bit shallow. Probably because I only got one ending, but I do like the art and the MC is neat.

HAPPY SAIN† SHEOL is a narrative-driven visual novel that embraces dark fantasy, psychological horror, and mystery within a haunting post-apocalyptic setting. Developed by HUNGRYCULT and published by Sekai Project, the game presents a world that has endured a devastating catastrophe known as the Pestis Disaster, leaving civilization struggling to survive thousands of years later. Rather than relying on action or traditional gameplay mechanics, the experience is built around immersive storytelling, memorable characters, and player-driven choices that gradually uncover the secrets hidden beneath its unsettling religious backdrop. From the opening moments, the game establishes an atmosphere of uncertainty, inviting players into a world where faith, fear, and hope constantly collide. Players step into the role of a trainee priest who arrives at Saint Sheol of the Underworld, a sacred institution that serves as both a sanctuary and the heart of humanity's remaining civilization. What initially appears to be a peaceful opportunity for a new beginning soon transforms into something far more disturbing after an encounter with a mysterious angel in a dream. As strange events unfold, the protagonist becomes entangled with six heroines, each carrying unique personalities, personal struggles, and hidden connections to the larger mysteries surrounding the temple. The narrative gradually expands beyond simple character interactions, weaving together themes of sacrifice, destiny, belief, and survival while encouraging players to question what is truly sacred and what has been manipulated by forces beyond human understanding. The game's strongest quality lies in its storytelling. Rather than delivering all of its answers at once, HAPPY SAIN† SHEOL steadily builds suspense through carefully paced revelations, emotional dialogue, and branching storylines. Player decisions significantly influence the direction of the narrative, opening different character routes and leading to multiple endings that reward replayability. Every route reveals additional pieces of the world's lore, making subsequent playthroughs feel meaningful instead of repetitive. The inclusion of gallery and lore features further enhances long-term engagement by allowing players to revisit memorable scenes and deepen their understanding of the game's mythology after completing various endings. Visually, the game adopts a retro-inspired pixel aesthetic that complements its grim atmosphere surprisingly well. The environments successfully capture the loneliness of a broken civilization while the character illustrations remain expressive enough to convey emotional nuance during dramatic scenes. This contrast between nostalgic visuals and mature storytelling creates a distinctive identity that separates the game from many modern visual novels. The soundtrack and vocal performances further strengthen the overall mood, shifting naturally between moments of quiet reflection, emotional intimacy, and overwhelming dread. Together, the audiovisual presentation consistently supports the narrative instead of overshadowing it. HAPPY SAIN† SHEOL is also notable for its willingness to tackle difficult subject matter. The story explores themes such as violence, death, despair, psychological trauma, religious symbolism, and moral ambiguity without presenting easy answers. These mature elements are woven into the broader narrative rather than included purely for shock value, helping reinforce the oppressive nature of the world and the emotional burdens carried by its characters. While this darker tone may not appeal to every player, those who appreciate thought-provoking visual novels that blend horror with philosophical storytelling will likely find the experience compelling from beginning to end. Although the game intentionally focuses on reading and decision-making over mechanical gameplay, its accessibility and polished presentation make it approachable for both longtime visual novel fans and newcomers interested in story-driven experiences. The branching narrative encourages exploration, the cast remains engaging throughout multiple routes, and the world-building provides enough depth to keep players invested in uncovering every secret. Players looking for fast-paced gameplay may find the slower pacing challenging, but those willing to immerse themselves in its rich narrative will discover a rewarding experience filled with emotional highs, unsettling mysteries, and memorable character development. Overall, HAPPY SAIN† SHEOL succeeds as a compelling dark fantasy visual novel that balances psychological horror, romance, mystery, and religious themes within an imaginative post-apocalyptic world. Its engaging cast, meaningful choices, layered storytelling, and atmospheric presentation combine to create a memorable adventure that rewards patience and multiple playthroughs. While its mature content and deliberate pacing make it best suited for fans of narrative-focused games, it stands out as an ambitious and emotionally engaging visual novel that confidently embraces its unique identity.
