Old school roguelike with turn based combat and super tiny screen. Running on 8K display - not recommended. Overall easy skip unless you like to waste time on this genre but you will find nothing substantial here.
A traditional roguelike simplified to the point of complete randomness. What makes this genre appealing (to me) is having an immense difficulty that must be learned from and numerous situations that must be exploited to maximize your odds. This game has difficulty, but there's no answer for it. Your options are move and attack (with occasional repositioning exploits.) If that doesn't work, enjoy your death. The pop-up text boxes that appear at the beginning and end of missions also often glitch out, scrolling off the screen at a snail's pace after you dismiss them, obscuring either the field or your stats until they're gone. Credit where it's due, I enjoy the in-game art design, and the music is pretty damn legit. Dungeons of Dredmor, Stone Soup, Pathos, Shattered Pixel Dungeon. All of these are worth a look if you want a game where your choices can matter.
A lot of people dislike this game for what I think are missed expectations. If you've ever played early PC dungeon crawlers you'd recognize what this game is trying to do, and frankly it does it very well. Hack, Slash, Loot is effectively a turn-based fast paced RPG and has a pretty fun gameplay loop. Why do people dislike it? You'll die. A lot. This game is kinda like the new pokemon roguelike mods. This game is based on one of the original rogue-likes. Death is inevitable but the reward for getting powerful makes you feel like God. It's a fickle beast and has its flaws but is worth it's price and the developer has done a good job with keeping up with it despite its age.
This game has simple mechanics and easy to pick up. Might be very random and unpredictable at times, but that what makes it really interesting and satisfying when you actually winning. That's why every single run offers unique experience and makes this game very replayable. Achieved my first win at 8th run by playing "Wizard" character, that helped me understand game mechanics and gave satisfaction during chill gameplay. So if you're really into turn-based games and roguelikes, you'll love this game. Just be prepared to die a lot.
It might not look like much but there's a lot of cool stuff going on under the hood. The game can be super challenging since it's very luck based, you're going to die, a lot, and some of those deaths will feel like bs but when you get THE run and start getting good items and snowballing thru the levels, it's super satisfying and fun and addictive. This game is also very similar to something like FTL in the sense that you have to do everything in your hands to improve your chances at success. You don't want to go to the next floor as soon as you find the way down and such cause you'll probably die and it'll be your fault. Exploring the whole floor and killing every enemy and getting all the loot is key. There's a bunch of classes and you can find artifacts in the level that you can then carry to new runs which is pretty sweet.
Miss, Miss, Miss, Miss, Miss. RNG% shouldn't be the main mechanic of the game. What a fun game!
Hack, Slash, Loot is a cautionary tale of gaming's darker side, blending nostalgia with exploitation. Proceed with caution, and remember: in the end, you're the one being mined, not the loot.
I've had this game for over a decade and over that time I've only invested just shy of 4 hours into it. That says a lot.
A brillant roguelike game, go get it you wont be disapointed :)
