Essentially a game of inventory management, organizing and remembering where you put that damn bottle that was green with swirls. (Or was it green with bubbles?) Graphics are nice, music is fine, the voice acting is atrocious but there's mercifully little of it. Story is linear, the world is fairly small. Interestingly enough there are some glowing rune stones scattered all over that I thought would be revealed as a fast travel system, but they are never explained in game and have no apparent function. Weirdly enough there's also a whole subsystem (seeds and spores) that is introduced through the main story quest but then never used again in the game. This could have been cut to declutter the experience. It would be a massive QoL improvement (as well as making shelves actually worth building) if machines were able to pull ingredients and essences from your furniture. It would also be nice with a search function for essences as well as links from elements to all essences they are used in. Also not sure why pins are limited to 6. Completion time: 12½ hours. The last half was a bit of a same-y slog once I'd figured out the system. If you're a completionist I'd estimate there's about 50 more hours in game to craft all the various furniture pieces for the Steam achievement. Final verdict: Not a bad game, it's just not … great.
Cute art got me to buy it, but it's just complex for complexity's sake. Tiny bag, no sorting, you pick each item and move them by hand. Lots of information and the tutorial info dump doesn't help with some things, need wiki to understand. Need to sell stuff just to be able to build, but things regrow once a week. Lots waiting for things to wait for other things. +Good designs and animations +Music -Unskippale cutscenes -Info dumping every step -No jumping even though you have verticality -Some activation bugs and overcomplication
The game is visually appealing, but the game play is terrible. You have to make chemicals with no guide whatsoever. The provided encyclopedia does hot help at all, and the formulas that should work produce something entirely different. You get frustrated every step of the way. If you want to endlessly make formulas that make so sense and no progress in the game, enjoy.
[Buyers Beware] I dont know man, to me it appears that some mechanics are made complicated just to pad the game time, some appears unnecessary complicated, the time never stops even when you are reading descriptions. It might be possible that the mechanics werent fully developed, missing some "Quality of Life" improvements to the game. Another grip that I have is that you need to find a new material to progress but sometimes you need to figure out with the ones that you already have, so every time you find a new material, granted most of the time you can already see 1 recipe you can use that new ingredient, but than you have to go around making mental combination to see if there is anything else you can make cuz some of the answers to the game progression are like that. It just seams unnecessary complicated, either let you resolve the way you want or at least warn that you need a new ingredient so I dont need to spend Alot of time making mental calculations to figure out that you cant do anything else with what you have, while the game time keeps ticking. The game is fun but it made me rage quit, the ideia of the mechanics are sound, looks good and fun, but the Implementation leaves some to be desired.
The Last Alchemist is a whimsical, slow-burning alchemical adventure that blends puzzle-solving, exploration, and resource management into a gentle but deeply methodical experience. Developed by Vile Monarch and published by Marvelous Europe, the game casts you as the final practitioner of a dying craft, returning to a long-abandoned workshop in hopes of curing a mysterious plague spreading across the land—and afflicting you as well. Rather than leaning on combat or high-stakes drama, the game builds its identity around discovery, experimentation, and the quiet joy of rebuilding knowledge piece by piece. The result is a game that nurtures curiosity, easing players into a world where progress comes not from fighting monsters but from understanding the logic hidden within nature’s raw materials. From the moment you step into the world, its charm is unmistakable. The environments are bright and painterly, filled with rolling hills, unusual flora, ancient ruins, and the adorable Agari—mushroom-like creatures who serve as your helpers, trading partners, and occasional companions. These characters and their expressive animations give the world a warm, handcrafted quality that complements the game’s peaceful tone. Your home base evolves gradually: tables fill with tools, machines whir to life, and new stations appear as your alchemical knowledge expands. The visual progression is satisfying in a way that mirrors the narrative theme of rediscovery. Everything feels like it belongs in a forgotten but magical corner of a fairy-tale world. Gameplay revolves around gathering resources and transforming them into Essences, the building blocks of alchemy. Instead of traditional crafting lists, The Last Alchemist presents extraction and refinement as small puzzle sequences: you manipulate shape-based components, match patterns, and experiment with combinations to reveal new properties. This approach gives weight to every new material you encounter, encouraging players to think rather than simply click through menus. The system rewards experimentation—often requiring trial and error—and while it can feel slow, it captures the thematic essence of the craft. The moment when a stubborn formula finally reveals its secrets is genuinely satisfying, reinforcing the idea that alchemy is an intellectual and creative discipline rather than a rote recipe-following exercise. However, the same intricacy that makes the system appealing can also create friction. Inventory constraints, stamina limitations, and frequent travel between regions introduce a sense of padding that some players may find tedious. Sleep cycles and stamina recovery force pacing breaks that don’t always align with the player’s momentum. The game’s lack of controller support further complicates its interface, as certain elements clearly seem shaped with gamepad-style navigation in mind. Navigating menus, rotating puzzle components, and managing items can feel clunkier than necessary, occasionally disrupting the flow of crafting and exploration. These usability issues don’t ruin the experience, but they do act as small obstacles that accumulate over time. Content-wise, The Last Alchemist leans toward the compact side. The main storyline is relatively brief, and side quests are limited in number. Those expecting a large, sprawling sandbox filled with automation chains or expansive farming systems may be surprised to find a more curated and linear experience. The pacing focuses on steady advancement through alchemical discovery, and the game’s world is more about wandering and appreciating small details than engaging in deep systemic gameplay. Still, within its chosen scope, the narrative and progression deliver a meaningful sense of growth and accomplishment. Despite its modest scale and occasional pacing hurdles, The Last Alchemist remains an engaging and memorable experience because of its heart. It is a game about rebuilding a lost discipline, forming bonds with peculiar creatures, and embracing the role of a patient problem-solver rather than a warrior. Its gentle tone and puzzle-centered design create a refreshing alternative to the faster, louder experiences that dominate the genre. For players who enjoy cozy crafting games with thoughtful mechanics and carefully constructed worlds, The Last Alchemist stands as a charming and worthwhile journey. For those who crave action-heavy gameplay or long-term depth, its slower pace and narrower focus may feel limiting, but its distinctive atmosphere and creative alchemy systems offer a unique flavor that will resonate with the right audience. Rating: 7/10
The only good game from obscure devs and publishers that otherwise have anime slop. Arguably, the entire alchemical system seems really thought out. It's historically informed and palatized. You're a crippled, old ginger man returning to the castle he trained at before he got ill. Very simple story. It's slow, dull while you're waiting for things to craft. The whole game has character, but no depth.
too quiet, and font is small
I'd like to say this game is one worth checking out. That it is worth the price when on a really good sale discount, and that it was developed with the care the story tries to emphasize. It really does. But, also it isn't. A major positive is that it absolutely does look like the screenshots on this store page. Each character, while we barely get to know them, is distinctively colorful. The Alchemist himself is a delightful middle aged gent who carries himself with as much grace, and wit as his circumstances allow--maybe even more than those things allow. The world you explore as the Alchemist is finely crafted, with interesting puzzles for unlocking passage to new spots on the map with new resources to study, and employ behind every natural barrier. From here, this review is going to get a little spoiler-y, but it needs to be understood why I'm leaving a "no" on the recommendation tracker. All of the above are positives, but if you have prior knowledge of how to get through each of these puzzles, and can keep your resource use tight, this game can probably be beaten in 5 hours, give or take a few minutes if you're waiting on resource respawns, which artificially extend the time requirements of an already very short game. That's how bite size the actual content of the game is.
I didn't even collect all the kinds of collectable resources to complete the main story, either; you can skip out on grabbing several of them because they never see any practical progression use. The same also goes for the excessive amount of possible combinations of the 'elements' extracted from these materials you gather. I could never recommend doing this, but I'd imagine you could easily extend the hours of the game just chasing the potential thousands of chemical combinations. But that would be a huge waste of time, and potential, sadly.
Between this, and new alchemy mechanics that are barely introduced only to be sidelined by the unfortunately very abrupt end-point of the narrative, the game feels unfinished. It is a very polished unfinished, but it's like looking at a beautifully done portrait, and seeing that its missing the subject's face. It feels half-done, like it was dropped suddenly in the middle of development for a more important project, or simply because the creators lost interest. This game was made with care. It is detailed, pretty, and what little story we get out of it has a heart that may even pull a tear or two from you at the end. But it missed the mark with me because it all but screams a need to actually use the things it ambitiously had implemented, but never really applied more than a single time, and left us with no point in trying to use those things any further because of it simply being a waste of an interesting mechanic that isn't worth its full potential when pursued. The positives are genuinely positive, but the negatives outweigh them so much that I can't recommend this one at full price.
