Sure, Once upon a Dungeon is an easy recommend for a fun home-baked roguelike that actually has some really neat ideas going on that work quite well. Is it rough around the edges? Heck yeah - right down to the mixed capitalization scheme of the title. Some of the font is stretched, the artwork is hardly eye candy, there is a bit of an input delay, and the mixed keyboard/mouse requirement is not exactly my favorite control scheme for a classic-styled roguelike. But believe it or not, the game is quite fun and dare I say even a bit fresh for how easy this is to get into. The crafting system is great, and really adds a nice layer of strategy. Encrusting weapons, armor, and jewelry with gems is nice and feels potent. Leveling up feels good and while you won't be wading through a never-ending list of skills - what is here is solid. This title is in the same ballpark as The Curse Of Yendor in that it's a subgenre of the classic roguelike. They are intentionally smaller in scope, but play around with some neat mechanics. Once upon a Dungeon has a strong one-more-run effect, and every run I've learned new ways to use things at my disposal to get further. From setting traps to crafting better weapons to encrusting gear with gems to finding secret rooms. Pros: +Small scope classic style roguelike that surely brings some neat ideas to the table that work well +Strong one-more-run effect once you begin to understand how everything works +Good coffee break game (but you can't hold a cup of coffee because you need both hands, sadly) +Lots of layers of strategy +Quite challenging +Price-point is fair +I appreciate the classless 'develope your hero how you want to through play' approach Cons: -Rough edges everywhere -Stretched fonts complete with typos and awkward descriptions (I am certain the creator is a non-native English speaker) -The dungeon layouts are as boring as it gets Once upon a Dungeon is surely a neat small-in-scope roguelike that does what it does well. Worth full price.

Monsters only move if you move. So this game is fully turn based. The game looks very basic, but besides that is has some good gameplay and it can be very challenging. There are a lot of items (weapons, recipes, potions, gold, etc) to be found in each dungeon level. If you find better equipment, the game lets you put it on automatically. Your hero's appearance will change if you equip new weapons/armor. If you level up your health bar is fully restored (I like that). And of course you can upgrade your skills after you gain a level. Besides attacking with different weapons your hero can use various magic spells, which you can find in the dungeon. Also, you can craft items in this little game, which is a nice add-on. The game has a map (like all roguelites/roguelikes should have). There are also some bosses in the dungeon and shopkeepers where you can spend your gold. What I also like about this game compared to some other roguelikes/roguelites is that you can go back to a level you already visited. You can choose if you want to play this game with a mouse or a keyboard (you can also use both). The game can be played in full screen or in windowed mode (many different sizes). There are three difficulty levels from which you can choose (easy, normal and hard). You can decide if you want or don't want permament death enabled. Therefore, this game is also playable for casual gamers! The graphics and music are very basic. There is some spoken text, which is nice. Once upon a dungeon has a good pricetag. It's a nice roguelite/roguelike dungeon crawler. Like some of these games, it can be a bit repetitive. I give it a 7 out of 10.
Strongly recommended! A simple-looking yet deep and enjoyable turn-based dungeon crawler that will very likely be worth your purchase. Don't let the minimalistic graphics turn you away - Once upon a Dungeon's character progression, inventory management and crafting mechanics offer a lot of room for playstyle variety, and figuring out how to beat bosses can be tactically intriguing. The "Easy" difficulty setting will allow you to enjoy exploring with minimal frustration. The game is being updated regularly, and I'm looking forward to how it evolves.
It is like those old Windows 95 games where you look for the key and find the exit. I think it is better to waste your time with other games.
At first glance Once upon a Dungeon might seem like one of many dungeon crawlers you see these days. But the details that you don't see at first glance make this game special. You can see the influence of first two Diablo games in many aspects (other than turn-based mode). But the real important thing is that this game can be challenging, just try to beat it without restarting any level (by using save & quit). You don't have character classes, instead you have full control over your character's progress. You have many item options, some very useful spells (turn into a bat and run), secret places and many other things, but I don't want to spoil the fun.
POLECAM !!! 10/10
Easy to get and fun to play roguelike . You can choose to play it without permadeath- good thing for casual and lame gamers like myself. Good crafting system. Graphics are very basic but clean and functional. When you wear a helmet or a mail, you can see it -not very usual in this genre. Perhaps this is not a game for hardcore roguelikers with a lot of commands and stats but it is enough depth for old school RPGs lovers. You can try the Android version.
A most generic and no-effort dungeon crawler.
It isnt greatest game of all time but it's okay. It's playable and finishable. There are many magic spells, 4 stats ya can increase and if ya're patient enough you can replay older levels to grind some xp and coins. Few slavic references like names of old gods or Wawel Dragon. Dev is nice and responsive. So. Yes.
