Putting the real ending behind harm mode is one of the weirdest, dumbest decisions they have made. Its not even a fun version of hard mode - for whatever reason - they added lives, makes your HP bar so short you die in 4 hits and the bossest now just fill the screen with junk as their attack pattern. And the route to the true end is so unsatisfying, instead of doing something cool like in other games, a deus ex machina character comes an fixes everything for you. And your playthrough is going to take so long, there's no point to the upgrade system as its locked in Hard. So there's go that to. I just hope this doesnt kill the Avenger IX games because I would rather have Blade as playable character than the cuncklier Copen we got. If you want it, buy it on sale.
This is the worst Gunvolt game ever... Still a 7 or 8 / 10 Switch it to Japanese if you dont want the wholesome Lola/Roro to be voiced by the fiend Morgana
when i first played this game. i thought it was the worst gunvolt game. and then i heard people out. i listened to rumors of technical depth. i then picked the game back up and started playing it like a true tryhard aiming for high end of level ranks and going for overdrive as soon as possible. i learned the depth of the mechanics. yeah it's still the worst gunvolt game. feels even worse than i remember actually when i'm trying to play it like a true gamer. i don't have any idea what inti was thinking.
This game is great and I recommend it if you are a fan of the Gunvolt series, the level design, bosses, graphics and soundtrack are all perfect here, like in the other titles. In addition, I like the fact that this game is harder than the iX 1. The problem is that I also believe they should not have changed Copen play style. If they wanted a melee combat style, they could have used Blade instead. But regardless, you can still replicate the old style with some limitations (1 dash instead of 3), it's a great game anyways (or using the trick on the edit note). Edit: after some time playing, I realized that you can replicate the old build way better if you use the D-Burst upgrade, unlocked after defeating a DLC boss (Yumo I believe). Go for it, it's a great addition to the game.
A vast improvement over the first game, but INTI games have so many issues that it's hard to know if this course correction was entirely warranted. I am flumoxed that they still cannot figure out proper sound options. The game can't be muted within the options (lowest volume settings are still not 0) but at least this game HAS volume sliders, unlike the first. Absolutely a great idea to replace the starting EX weapon with the homing one. Using it in the first game felt like the intended air dash. Multiple air dashes are gone! We didn't need that extra layer of resource management, and that level of mobility fundamentally broke the game -- any stage piece designed around it felt good, but those were necessarily rare, and so the majority of stage pieces felt very easy and boring, just zipping into one enemy after another without a thought, or over the entire stage if you really wanted. The new melee weapon is clumsy, but clarifies the gameplay direction and loop. This is where I think course correction could have happened at the tutorialization stage rather than by totally changing mechanics. If the scoring system had been well explained in the first one, and the stages hadn't needed to be designed around >4 consecutive multi-screen long dashes, I don't think there would have actually been anything wrong with the ranged weapon (other than shooting over the heads of many minor enemies and even static treasure chests) The story feels more complete, but that's a bad thing. Megaman X-likes ever since they went mobile on the GBA have had a strong focus on story-telling, much to the detriment of the genre. In a highly replayable action game, long text chains aren't welcome. Skippable cutscenes? Sure. Anyways it's a fun game, like most of the gunvolt entries, a bit rough around the edges.
Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2, developed and published by INTI CREATES CO., LTD., is a dynamic 2D action platformer that builds upon the foundations laid by its predecessor, delivering a fresh yet familiar experience within the beloved Gunvolt universe. Centered on Copen, a skilled combatant enhanced with powerful abilities, players are thrust into fast-paced stages filled with formidable enemies and intricate level designs. The game’s narrative continues to explore the deepening mysteries surrounding Copen’s mission and his interactions with his AI partner, Lola, blending action-packed gameplay with a compelling story that will appeal both to long-time fans and newcomers. The core gameplay in Luminous Avenger iX 2 emphasizes precision, speed, and strategic combat. Players control Copen, utilizing his signature Razor Wheel and the Overdrive system to unleash a wide array of attacks and combos. The controls are responsive, allowing for fluid movement across varied environments that challenge the player’s reflexes and tactical thinking. Level design is well-crafted, offering a balanced mix of platforming challenges, enemy encounters, and environmental hazards that require players to remain alert and adapt their approach. The game rewards exploration and skillful execution, keeping players engaged throughout the experience. Visually, the game showcases INTI CREATES’ signature anime-inspired art style, with vibrant, detailed character models and richly designed backgrounds that bring the world of Gunvolt to life. The animations are smooth and energetic, particularly during combat sequences where flashy effects and rapid attacks create a satisfying visual spectacle. Complementing the visuals is an energetic soundtrack that enhances the pacing of the gameplay, mixing intense battle themes with atmospheric melodies that immerse players in the game’s world. While the game excels in many areas, there are some gameplay elements that have sparked mixed reactions. Notably, the limitation on air dashes—specifically the inability to refill them by attacking enemies in mid-air—can sometimes disrupt the fluidity of movement, forcing players to be more deliberate in their traversal. Additionally, certain difficulty spikes, especially in Hard Mode, have presented a significant challenge. Boss fights such as those against Ypsilon are particularly demanding, requiring players to master patterns and employ precise timing, which may lead to frustration for some but a rewarding challenge for others. Despite these tougher moments, Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 offers a richly rewarding experience for those who appreciate intense 2D action games with deep mechanics and a strong narrative. The blend of engaging combat, striking visual design, and atmospheric audio work together to create a cohesive and exciting adventure. Though some gameplay mechanics may require adaptation, the game stands as a testament to INTI CREATES’ dedication to crafting high-quality platformers that respect their roots while pushing forward with new ideas. For fans of the Gunvolt series or players seeking a polished action platformer with a compelling story, Luminous Avenger iX 2 delivers a satisfying and memorable journey. Rating: 7/10
This is a really good game!
