GOOD NEWS!! They finally fixed it up!!! GUnship and GS 2000 are the best of helicopter simulations there ever was and still was!! Now all they have to do is bring us the Amiga versions and the c64 version of Gunship and were all set!! The copyright protections have been removed and they have docs. While you're at it STEAM, do me a favor... Fix Lost patrol and post us the amiga versions along with the Amiga and c64 versions of Airborne Ranger! And the atari 8bit and dos versions of Super Huey while you're at it!!
It seems the old game protection is on it... almost like an abandonware move. You can't play the 1986 version more than 3 missions, it then crashes you out. Until this is fixed, save your money.
I remember typing in C:\GS2000 and then executing the game back in the day then throwing the card keyboard overlay over my PC keyboard, then i watched the intro sat down whilst scoffing my Spicy Tomato Pot Noodle in a rush whilst my hard earned Commanche made its way to the Primary and Secondary Missions. The Joy i got when i first got promoted to 2nd Lt to have my own flight of Gunships was amazing, picking out the helicopters and their load outs and feeling sadness when one of my prized pilots was lost or the joy i got when i got to hand them medals and promotions, it was amazing. To this day, no other gunship game as ever come as close to my heart as this game has 30 years ago, it loaded me with so many memories and feelings that i don't get from any modern game these days. I never made it to Brigadier general either! Legendary game, graphics aren't exactly Arma 3 standard, the Sound ain't that great, it comes with the phillipines and antarctic add on disk, it also offers superb nostalgic experiences for those of us whom was gaming playing simulators in the 90's. And it might appear as a clumsy ancient game, but you could not be anymore further from the truth as I have just proven on the European campaign, a city map i had to dodge an incoming air to air from a Mi 28 Havoc chopper from behind, i dropped rapidly behind a building, hovered, waited for the incoming missile to lose track, then i popped up from behind a building and fired a Sidewinder right back at him and dropped back down, he was dead within seconds. Don't mess with a loaded AH 64 Apache! Long Live Gunship 2000, Thanks for coming back to me!! The Original Gunship was the first ever Sim i came across in my life. A game my brother played in the 80's on my Commodore 64 when it came out, it was good back in the day, i "tried" playing it when i was a child but i failed miserably, my bro also lost his ♥♥♥♥ when he saw that i had killed his pilot! More Memories!
Updated Review, June, 2024: So, Atari launched this in an absolutely abhorrent state. Clearly ripped abandonware, not even fully functional. It was just a mess. However, to their credit, the folks at Atari heard our cries of foul and endeavored to fix these two games: Gunship - Less crash-prone (It used to crash after the third mission, but others have now reported getting well past that). I've only gotten a few missions in before dying -- this game is TOUGH -- but had no crashes. This one still has copy protection, but they now include a reference sheet to get past it. Gunship 2000 - Now the final CD-ROM version with no copy protection. Also includes the expansion, and all the documentation, including both manuals (original and expansion), and now has property DOSBox settings. Gunship 2000 is my favorite flight sim ever, and now it's at a state in which I can recommend it to people. It's also very playable with a gamepad! So yeah, I feel now I can recommend this pack. If you can get over the old graphics, I feel Gunship 2000 has so, so much to offer for the flight sim fan. It's my favorite helicopter sim and flight sim of all time because of its sheer variety. Please do check it out, and thank you for reading. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Review, February, 2024: Do not buy this. It's broken abandonware. I say this even though Gunship 2000 is my all-time favorite flight sim. Just please. Do not buy this. I bought this so I could tell you not to buy it.
ORIGINAL REVIEW AT RELEASE TIME: Regarding Gunship 2000 - Don't buy this. It's a lazy release of a broken version from MyAbandonware site (version 469.07). It doesn't provide proper GPS codes for this version, those included are for the base game. Without proper codes you will not be able to access the F10 planning map, making this game practically a demo version. The dosbox config is another slap in the face. The game plays really bad with it. It's really sad seeing this classic game treated without a proper respect. UDPDATED REVIEW Oct 2024: The broken version of the GS2000 was replaced with the latest one released on CD-ROM back in the day (with no copy protection). There are still some minor issues I adressed in my Guide you can check out in the Community section. But it works now, and documentation included is of nice quality. It seems the publisher worked on this release so I'm changing my review to positive one.
Bought this for Gunship 2000. It is everything I remember from what it was back in the day and plays great on Windows 10. Of all the retro games I've bought in the last few years I probably play this one the most. This package also comes with a version of the original Gunship (IBM PC version I think) - I haven't tried that one, but I've sunk hundreds of hours into the Commodore 64 version back in the 80s and early 90s. My favorite part about Gunship 2000 that I haven't found in other games is that once you've reached the rank of Lieutenant you get four AI wingmen to command to help you complete your missions. You choose who to promote, award medals to, etc. The game lets you rename them so you can put your friends in the game if you want. But be aware that they are at risk of becoming casualties of war just as you are. You also have several different kinds of helicopters to fly, not just the Apache. For what this lacks in fancy graphics and realistic sounds, it more than makes up for in playability. I bought this in 2025 and have had no issues with crashing or bugs.
They fixed the bugs after initial release and removed gps protection. Awesome trip down the memory lane.
Gunship 2000 is one of the greatest helicopter games of all time, if not THE greatest. Gunship 2000 still, to this day, hasn't been surpassed in terms of missions, pilot progression, crew management, and more. The flight model and controls leave something to be desired, but everything else about the game still holds up.
