Worth every cent, although UI can be buggy at times. Highly recommend, very easy to run and great gameplay and story.

Gunbrella is a side-scrolling action-adventure developed by Doinksoft and published by Devolver Digital, built around one of the most unusual weapons in recent memory. The game places players in the role of a grieving woodsman who embarks on a dangerous journey seeking answers and revenge after a personal tragedy. Armed with the titular Gunbrella, a hybrid shotgun and umbrella, he travels through a bleak world ravaged by environmental collapse, corporate greed, and social decay. While the premise initially appears eccentric, the game quickly proves that its central concept is more than a gimmick, delivering a memorable adventure that successfully combines fast-paced action, exploration, and narrative intrigue. The defining feature of the experience is the Gunbrella itself. Rather than functioning solely as a weapon, it becomes an essential tool for almost every aspect of gameplay. Players use it to blast enemies, block incoming attacks, glide across large gaps, and propel themselves through the environment with remarkable speed. This versatility creates a satisfying sense of momentum that makes simply moving through the world enjoyable. Traversal feels smooth and intuitive, and the game continuously introduces new situations that encourage creative use of the Gunbrella’s abilities. The result is a gameplay loop that remains engaging from beginning to end. Combat is equally impressive thanks to the weapon's flexibility. Battles are fast, responsive, and often require quick decision-making. Players can dodge enemy attacks, close distances rapidly, and unleash devastating shotgun blasts while maintaining constant movement. Encounters rarely become repetitive because positioning and timing are just as important as firepower. Additional ammunition types and upgrades offer opportunities to customize combat strategies, although some players may find themselves relying heavily on the standard shotgun due to its effectiveness. Even so, the core mechanics are polished enough that every fight feels energetic and rewarding. Beyond its action elements, Gunbrella incorporates a surprisingly compelling mystery. The protagonist's search for answers gradually uncovers a larger conspiracy involving strange cults, powerful corporations, opportunistic criminals, and disturbing experiments. Conversations with a wide range of eccentric characters flesh out the setting and provide insight into the fractured society players explore. The writing balances dark humor with serious themes, helping the world feel both entertaining and unsettling. As the narrative unfolds, the game explores issues such as environmental exploitation, unchecked industrial expansion, and the consequences of obsession, giving the story greater depth than its premise initially suggests. The game's visual presentation plays a significant role in establishing its identity. Detailed pixel-art environments depict rain-soaked settlements, abandoned industrial facilities, and hostile wilderness areas filled with danger and decay. The art direction embraces a gloomy noir-inspired aesthetic that perfectly complements the story's darker themes. Despite relying on retro-style graphics, the environments are rich with detail and atmosphere, making every location feel distinct and memorable. Character animations are fluid, and visual effects during combat enhance the sense of impact without overwhelming the screen. Sound design further elevates the experience. The thunderous blasts of the Gunbrella provide satisfying feedback during combat, while environmental audio helps create a constant feeling of tension and isolation. The soundtrack effectively supports both exploration and action, shifting between haunting melodies and energetic themes when necessary. Together, the audio and visual elements create a cohesive world that remains immersive throughout the adventure. While Gunbrella succeeds in most areas, it is not completely free of shortcomings. Some progression systems could have been expanded further, and certain upgrades feel less transformative than expected. Players looking for a massive open-ended world may also find the game's structure more focused and linear than anticipated. A few story developments may not resonate equally with everyone, and some side content lacks the depth of the main narrative. However, these issues are relatively minor when compared to the strengths of the overall package. What ultimately makes Gunbrella stand out is its confidence in its core design. The game takes a bizarre idea and builds an entire experience around it with remarkable creativity. Every mechanic, from movement to combat and exploration, reinforces the central concept while contributing to a cohesive and entertaining adventure. Combined with its atmospheric world, engaging story, stylish presentation, and polished gameplay, Gunbrella delivers an experience that feels distinct from many other indie action titles. Rating: 8/10
