About
Who needs backstory? Who needs resource-gathering? Diplomacy is so last year. Gratuitous Space Battles cuts right to the chase of sci-fi strategy games, and deals with large, completely unjustified space battles between huge opposing space fleets.
Gratuitous Space Battles combines the visual appeal of an RTS, with the addictive unit-placement and design gameplay from tower defense games. In GSB, the player does not control individual ships at all during battle. The ships fight to a pre-determined set of orders and formations given to them by you before the battles.
GSB casts you as supreme space admiral, tasked with the design of individual spaceships, and the composition of your fleet, as well as general orders of engagement. This is not a twitch-based real time arcade game like many an RTS, but a game of careful thought, planning and big-picture strategy. Huge space battles can be won or lost depending on just how cleverly you balanced the needs of defensive shielding and armor against the expensive punch of laser cannons and plasma torpedoes.
4 different unlockable player races
Over 40 different ship hulls
Over 120 spaceship modules
Choice of skirmish vs AI, or never-ending survival mode
Play with different rules as each battle has different spatial anomalies to deal with.
Note that this game is 16 years old and that screen resolutions larger than 1920x1080 may result in some visual issues on certain screens.

Battles are way to hard. Decent game but dude, unbalaced as hell. Cant win ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Gratuitous Space Battles takes an unconventional approach to the strategy genre by removing many of the mechanics that players normally associate with real-time strategy games and focusing entirely on fleet design and tactical planning. Instead of harvesting resources, constructing bases, or issuing constant battlefield commands, the game asks players to become architects of futuristic armadas before combat even begins. Every engagement is won or lost through preparation rather than reflexes, creating an experience that feels more like solving a strategic puzzle than participating in a traditional RTS. This design philosophy gives the game a unique identity and allows it to stand apart from countless space combat titles that rely heavily on fast-paced micromanagement. The game's greatest strength lies in the impressive depth of its customization system. Players have access to dozens of ship classes and an extensive collection of modules that allow each vessel to fulfill a specific purpose within a fleet. Weapons, shields, armor, support equipment, targeting priorities, and formations all contribute to the effectiveness of a battle group, encouraging experimentation with countless possible combinations. Unlockable alien races further expand strategic possibilities by introducing different technologies and approaches to combat. Because battles play out automatically after deployment, success depends entirely on the quality of the fleet's design and the player's understanding of how different components interact with one another. Every defeat provides valuable insight that encourages further refinement rather than frustration. Watching the battles unfold is surprisingly satisfying despite the lack of direct control. Massive cruisers exchange devastating volleys of lasers, missiles, plasma fire, and other futuristic weaponry while smaller support ships attempt to keep formations intact amid the chaos. Explosions illuminate the battlefield as carefully designed fleets either execute their strategies perfectly or collapse under superior enemy tactics. The game's presentation succeeds in making every encounter feel cinematic, especially when large capital ships begin falling one after another. Environmental hazards and spatial anomalies also influence engagements, forcing players to reconsider familiar fleet designs instead of relying on a single successful formula. Combined with skirmish scenarios and a survival mode that steadily increases the challenge, the game offers plenty of opportunities to test new ideas and improve strategic thinking. Its unusual gameplay, however, may not appeal to every strategy fan. Players looking for constant interaction throughout battles could find the automated combat less engaging than more conventional real-time strategy games. The learning curve is also fairly demanding because understanding the effectiveness of different weapons, ship layouts, defensive systems, and formations takes time. Failures often require careful examination of what went wrong before adjustments can be made. Fortunately, this complexity is exactly what gives the game its lasting appeal for those who enjoy experimenting with mechanics and discovering increasingly efficient fleet compositions. The satisfaction of watching a newly redesigned fleet overcome a difficult opponent makes the investment worthwhile. Although the visuals and interface reflect the game's age, they remain functional and effectively support its core mechanics. Large fleet engagements continue to look impressive thanks to the abundance of visual effects and detailed ship designs, while the interface provides access to the extensive customization options without becoming unnecessarily complicated. Some technical limitations are noticeable on modern systems, particularly at very high display resolutions, but they rarely overshadow the quality of the underlying gameplay. The emphasis has always been on strategic depth rather than graphical realism, and that focus allows the experience to remain enjoyable years after its original release. Gratuitous Space Battles succeeds because it fully commits to its unusual concept instead of attempting to imitate other strategy games. It rewards thoughtful preparation, experimentation, and long-term planning over quick reactions, offering a refreshing alternative for players who enjoy analyzing complex tactical systems. The enormous variety of fleet configurations, meaningful customization options, and visually entertaining battles create substantial replay value, while the distinctive gameplay ensures that each victory feels earned through intelligent decision-making rather than mechanical skill alone. Although its niche design and slower pace will not satisfy everyone, it remains one of the most creative and memorable space strategy games available. Rating: 7/10
Game was great. Wish there was a remaster or newer game that wasn't GSB2. GSB1 is peak
Unfortunately it appears this game is dead. CD keys don't work, the developer's server is returning 500 errors on key validation.
When one person programmer makes games and try to do so not just to please themselves but the whole world. The game like many others they have programmed is inspiring. Others try to program games downloaded game engines to help in making good games. https://www.positech.co.uk/about.html is the sight that lets you know about them. Its effort should be appreciated. Maybe others can do better but the attempt is better than not doing anything at all. I hope everyone that gives honest reports help them to improve the game along with down thumb explain and appreciated the sole individual effort. Nothing in life is easy and making a game is not easy either so many choices and expectations can lead to greatness or downfall. Just enjoy what is here and any improvement lets them know their effort is appreciated for everyone has only 24hours a day and doing this effort does take times and effort.
Multiplayer is down, which nixes most of the fun of this game. There is another sequel coming out, wait for that instead.
Quick game to get used to, you can play for as long or short as you like.
