This game feels unfinished, yet it is being sold at a relatively high price without being clearly labeled as Early Access. Several core gameplay mechanics are either broken or severely bugged. In-game websites and PDF files frequently fail to load. The only workaround I have found is changing the display resolution to 1920×1080, even though my native resolution is 3440×1440. Since the most recent patch, scrolling through in-game websites has also become extremely laggy and unreliable. Another major issue is that the in-game internet connection disconnects every three to five minutes of in-game time. This often prevents any further progress and forces the player to repeatedly run back and forth to restore the connection. While returning, a hacking event will often begin. Even when attempting to defend against the hack, the player can be killed, resulting in the entire process having to be started again from the beginning. In its current state, making meaningful progress is extremely difficult. The experience is frustrating, repetitive, and unnecessarily time-consuming. It almost feels as though the game is designed to consume enough time that players exceed the refund window before realizing how broken it is. This is not acceptable, even for an indie game. EDIT: Refunded. Thanks to Steam Support for handling it. I might check the game again in one or two years, once it is fully functional and available for half the price. However, I am done paying full price for unfinished and broken games while the developers expect paying customers to act as unpaid testers and help them fix the product. That is exactly what Steam’s Early Access program is for. If the game had been released and priced accordingly as Early Access, much of this criticism could have been avoided. Releasing it as a supposedly finished product at full price makes the backlash entirely understandable. At this point, it is difficult not to assume that the decision was motivated primarily by greed.
Not entirely sure why this game is so badly sound mixed, but hacks are SO loud while the rest of the game is a bit too quiet. You either let your eardrums explode or you die due to not being able to hear important sound cues. The devs telling others to use the sound equalizer on windows is also hilarious.
Badly balanced difficulty to the point of being completely unfair, and also buggy in it's current state. Threats overlap as do hacks, so you are forced to lose and the mechanics you need to perform in order to deal with the bad guys are annoying super-repetitive, chores. Agonizingly nitpicky gameplay loop where you frequently die for a dumb, near unavoidable reason or outright bugged enemies overlapping at impossible times. Get a grip, dude. It doesn't need to be easy, but at least coherent. Cameras take ages to activate and use, for example and a lot of the stuff you need to buy costs too much. You are stuck in a loop of trying to survive the garbage and have near zero time to look for keys. This is coming from someone who has completed WTTG2, by the way. Dev needs to clean up the nonsense, bugfix, test a lot more and balance out all the features so that the game is actually fun. As of now I'd reccommend waiting for the game to be patched into a playable state.
enjoying it so far, but i keep getting soft-locked. First, my copy and paste stopped working, so i had to restart, which, since it was the first hour, i had to rewatch the entire intro again (maybe let us skip this?) and while writing this, i turned the breaker box back on, but the power remained off, and i am now soft-locked with no power at all. which means i have to reset again. Game just released so I don't entirely mind some bugs, but game breaking and run ending is kind of frustrating. EDIT: i was not soft-locked due to the power, i did not realize there was another power box EDIT 2: i believe i found the reason the copy/paste breaks. it seems to happen if i start highlighting text while ronald is still sending messages. This broke it a few times, and hope it gets patched :)
for the love of god decrease the hack cue audio volume
Unlike the previous WTTG, this one seems a little too buggy and counterintuitive to be beatable. Even after downloading the PDF for information on the threats there's no clear indicators on how to prevent the instakills. Tanner seems to have no grace-period early game which makes things incredible inconvenient to play. I haven't found any sound-cues or seen him ahead of his instakill animations. Even looking through the curtains of the motel windows he doesn't appear before his instakills. The game also needs to tweak the sound variations a bit, hack sound cues are BLARINGLY loud to the point where it's far too uncomfortable to play with sound anywhere above 30%. This makes footsteps and such impossible to hear. Sometimes the panic button on the front desk doesn't work, and the computer hacks seem to have no consistency with difficulty- sometimes they randomly become insanely difficult and force you to have a SLED on you at all times. Conclusion (Mostly my opinion): Game needs some serious rebalancing, especially for a "normal" mode. Add sound sliders, especially for the hack sound. Give a little more insight on the 'threats pdf', I shouldn't need to wait a couple weeks for a wiki on this game to understand how to thoroughly prevent Tanner early in a run.
The most unfinished release in the series so far. This should've been marked as early access through Steam. - The audio is not great. The mix makes some sequences not fair / fun to play a lot of the time. - Some sequences of enemies & hacks are not fair / fun once in a while. - And there are bugs which could have been caught in an early access phase. My monitor can just become black and completely stop functioning. I've seen quite a few crashes for other people but I haven't experienced them myself. And I saw something related to browsing being tied to framerate. I'm unsure if v-sync actually does something for me because I'm on a 480hz monitor and that might still be too high? Hell if I know. I think a direct feedback / bug report feature would be quite useful. I might change my review once this game starts valuing my time a bit more. This game has a lot of potential.
I haven't finished it yet, but so far the game looks good and runs well. Challenging and enough of a step forward to justify the purchase of the third edition. Classic welcome to the game experience, immersive and scary. Very cool, currently a few bugs but dev addressed a day1 patch so we'll see -x
Edit: The button issue has been nerfed, which is great. The dev is working hard on getting patches out quickly, which is also great. This game has a great chance to rival WTTG 2. However, it should not have launched in this state. I know over time things will get smoothed over, (cherry picking an example here) but even with the latest hotfix, there's now a new "feature" where you get punished just for checking for a threat. I understand it's to prevent just spamming the button, but checking for Tanner once every 10 in game minutes is not in my eyes "spamming" the button yet I had to go fix the internet very quickly after checking a few times. Regardless, using the button repeatedly to check for Tanner in my opinion adds to the flow state these kind of games love to put you in and needs to be reverted, or how using the button degrades your internet needs to be seriously nerfed. Thumbs up just because I know what this game will become as it gets fixed over time but it's a little too brutal in a bad way in this state.
Do I like the game? Yes... But there are some huge glaring issues that make me almost want to leave a negative review. SOUND CUES in this game ARE absolutely HORRENDOUS, as the game is already really quiet to begin with. I have to crank my headphones to max volume to hear the assassin, tanner, and tucker. Only to get ear blasted because of the hacking sound which is still extremely loud. Audio just needs a whole rebalance in this game especially since the gameplay revolves around it. A player shouldn't be second guessing themselves on ambient noises to know if it's the killer coming, it should be clear and decisive if you're paying attention to them. This alone makes me want to say not to buy it until it gets fixed or reworked, but the web browsing and computer stuff is fun so I'll deal with it.
