I’ve been on a Tower Defense kick for the last few years, having played tons of these kinds of games. I’m not sure if Gods of Defense is the best I’ve played, but it’s certainly a top contender. What we have here is a fusion between tower defense and rogue-lite, offering up ever-changing levels and some randomization to keep you on your toes. Like the best games, it has that “just-one-more try” quality that hooked me the first time I booted up the demo. Gods of Defense is deceptively robust. There’s loads of mechanics, from inflation in tower placement to the collection of additional resources. There’s different forms of currency to earn and many different types of towers are unlocked as you play. Assorted minigames also become available, breaking up the monotony just enough to keep one’s palate fresh. Bonuses and “curses” are continuously thrown around, some of which can completely turn the tides in any given run. Like all games with a “rogue” bent, there’s a fair amount of grinding involved. Nonetheless, it retains a ton of fun, and you always feel like you’re advancing even if only in small, incremental steps. And even once you’ve tackled everything the campaign has to offer, going back and earning trophies adds even more longevity. The only truly disappointing aspect is the fact that I finished it. I really hope the developer will add more features, more mechanics to the minigames, and hopefully even some DLC. I love this game and would love to return to it with some fresh challenges.
10 times grindier than the flash game, but the game breaks most of the time, progress bars stuck at 0% which stop u from completing. real ♥♥♥♥ game, pretty good to play while u barely focus on it, if it wasnt broken
English: I love tower defense games and have played many. I think this one stands out a bit from the crowd. In particular, the learning and difficulty curves are excellently balanced, reducing grinding and initial frustration to a minimum. While playing through the campaign, challenges can be completed fairly early on and thus trophies can be earned to make what little grinding that remains more interesting. With more and more game elements (and the aforementioned trophies), the campaign remains exciting and challenging even after exhausting all upgrades. What also convinces me is that the developer of Blue Math is always available to the community (I mean that literally. Seriously Jay, what time do you sleep? ;) ) and is open to ideas and suggestions. I highly recommend the game to any fan of TDGs. Get it and join us on the Discord server where we discuss strategies, successes and flops. :)
TLDR: As a person that likes TD and searches for unique ideas, I was disappointed by this game. The mechanics work against the player instead of making the game fun. Balancing needs more work. For less than half the price, it would be a good game, but it is overpriced for such core parts to be missing. - For example auto-upgrade is enabled by default but it is actually a waste of money, which would make sense towards the end of a map but it doesn't (you don't earn gold towards the end from killing creeps, so this mechanic practically turns off). Auto-upgrade sinks your gold to 'progress' towards an upgrade instead of actually activating the upgrades and this gold you cannot use anywhere else in the meantime. - There are tower priorities, but in 99.9% of the times, you wish they were set to an appropriate default so you wont have to repeat it every single map (e.g. Bazooka to highest health, laser to lowest shield, e.t.c.). - The difficulty is just about realizing which towers are strong and which are unnecessary, when you unlock all towers there is no difficulty anymore. The same for upgrades, there are expensive and useless upgrades, and really strong cheap upgrades (another reason why auto-upgrade makes no sense). As long as you pass the first rounds, victory is guaranteed. - There is a corruption game mechanic, which is automatically resolved as long as you have enough mana. So it has close to no effect on the game, as long as you are aware of it. - The way to gain mana or "close gates" to win a map is to simply place the cheap building on every mana source that opens up, so this game mechanic also has no options and no effect to the game, just an annoying action you need to repeat. - The idea of towers oneshooting enemies sounds interesting, but in reality it removes any possibility to make the game interesting, since higher HP/shield doesn't matter anymore. Either adjust this, or introduce different units to the game. - There are only 3 types of units: demon (swarm), beast (stronger), airborne. Sometimes speedy units add variation, or units with higher shield/HP, but with one-shooting towers it doesn't really matter. - The best way to gain gold is not at all what it should be.
Build a bunch of bazookas (or any tower with less effect) and upgrade them to lvl2. Then wait for the +2 levels option to come in the cards and select it to gain tens of thousands of gold. Sell the towers, and place them again as lvl2. Rinse and repeat. Also Gold mining building sucks. To gain gold with it, it costs gold. If you have gold for enough miners, then you don't need them. It is always my first ban.
- There is a bunch of content that appears to exist just to make the repetitive gameplay more fun, but it doesn't really do anything. The illusion of choices and options is shot down by poor balancing. The idea to have "trophies" when you replay a map is nice, but the reward has no effect on the game. The beginning is fun, but that's all. As a clone of Rogue Tower, I found this game not so well made after the first few maps and I'd rather play Rogue Tower than this one. Grinding appears to be solved, I almost didnt have to grind at all, just had to replay a few maps 'cause I couldn't proceed due to 'Hope' currency. The potential is great, but it doesnt follow through to make the game mechanics fun. If it was cheaper it would be worth it, but not for this amount of money.
The graphics and play style resemble rogue tower, BUT it has a different theme as the title suggests. So far so good, solid TD 8/10 easy
Addictingly fun with good mechanics that scratch that tower defense itch.
works great on steam deck
A very good tower defense, and also very difficult, requiring a player to deliberately grind persistent upgrades to have a chance. Smart resource system encourages replays.
-TRY THE DEMO- and see if you like it.. Fun TD game but not for most.. If you are allergic to grinding, keep walking; this isn't for you.. BUT if you worship Deities of Grind (I'm looking at you TD games player) this one is up there,, Despite the steep and slow progress, the concept is kinda unique.. Pray hard to RNG god, hoping RNG doesn't ruin your run.. Grind fest/10 Edit: Changing my stance on this. I played in 4x speed and still have to wait for the flying enemies to make laps before it's within range of the tower that can take them out. Keep in my I maxed all available tower but one. and there is A to B to C then A B C combined to make D, for D to be swapped into something else. good lord. I'll see the end of it, might take a while though.
Fantastic tower defense game, it scratches that itch. It's like if Rogue Tower had a progression system that wasn't designed by a stray kitten on fentanyl. I see a lot of reviews complaining about the grind. Either the developer changed things or they're nuts. The progression system is perfectly fine. Every session gets you meaningful progress. It's not like you have to grind for 8 hours to unlock the true game. Maybe I'm too damn old or they're too damn young, but I feel like the progression is right where I'd want it to be. Don't let that discourage you.
