I won this game recently on SteamGifts, so I decided to give it a try. I really like 12 Is Better Than 6, which is a similar style of game but has a lot more going for it than God's Trigger. I don't exactly know what the goal was here. It feels like the game tries to be a lot of things at once but fails at every single one. The difficulty is not balanced at all, relying more on luck than actual skill. On top of that, there is a very annoying mechanic for keyboard and mouse users that can legitimately drive you insane.
Gameplay Chaos & Pointless Mechanics
The game threw several technical issues my way, which only amplified the unbalanced difficulty. The skill tree system felt completely pointless to me, as most of the cooldown reductions and duration buffs do not make a noticeable difference in gameplay. In a game where being half a second late means instant death, the frequent stutters become a massive issue. To make matters worse, the developers botched the keyboard and mouse controls. Instead of your mouse aiming independently, the aim follows your character's physical movement. You can easily guess how frustrating and annoying that gets. I hate to keep comparing, but 12 Is Better Than 6 is an older title that feels significantly more polished than what I saw here.
Tedious Character Switching & Weak Story
I tested this game in both solo and co-op modes. The momentum and pacing get completely killed every time you are forced to switch characters just to bypass a specific obstacle. The gameplay feels much better when you can just stick to one character, focus on their toolkit, and master their playstyle. Forcing constant character swaps might be a narrative requirement, but it is a terrible design choice for anyone playing solo. Even though the switching mechanic is fast, it just never clicked with me. The story itself is completely generic and offers nothing special. This title was likely a Humble Choice inclusion at some point, and I honestly wouldn't recommend looking at it unless you can grab it for a dollar or two. It is simply not well-realized, except for its visuals and music. The soundtrack is easily the star of the show here.
Technical Stutters & Performance Flaws
The performance flaws might be related to the engine struggling with frame rates above 60 FPS, though I cannot say for certain. These micro-stutters constantly disrupted my flow and caused unfair deaths. Curiously, the stutters stopped occurring in the later chapters, so my best guess is that the optimization issues are tied to specific level assets and designs in the earlier stages.
Visuals, Music & Final Thoughts
On a positive note, the game looks decent for what it is. The graphics are clean, and I didn't encounter any game-breaking bugs or glitches. The character designs are quite cool, and the voice acting is decent, even if it fails to elevate the weak plot. You can't really get attached to the characters. The narrative feels like it was thrown in just to be there rather than being a core focus. The music, however, is a completely different story. The tracks are incredibly cool, perfectly placed, and bring a lot of energy to the gameplay. You are free to give this a shot, but do not expect a Hotline Miami level of quality. It is a mediocre experience wrapped in a good soundtrack, and based on my time with it, I cannot recommend it.
Rating: 6/10

fun to play with a friend :)
