Believe it or not, a special Sushi roll back then cost around $3 to $5, which is equivalent to $30 to $50 in today's money. I can't recall having ever seen a Japanese restaurant when I was growing up in Geneva in the 70s or 80s. My first Sushi experience was around the mid-2000s, a whopping ten years after I touched down in the land Down Under. And let me tell you, I could stuff my face with Sushi like there was no tomorrow at my local Sushi train for $50 those days. But the boom of Japanese cuisine has grown so much that even imaginary beings are craving it! It's the turn of the Goblin world to be flooded with slices of raw fish on top of beds of rice. And you, my friend, you are the chef who will make it happen, in Goblin Sushi! Goblin Sushi is a casual cooking job simulator with roguelike and deck-building elements, developed by Old Cake Factory and published by Metaroot on the 10th of February 2026 on the Steam platform. At the time I am writing this review, the game is in early access, and the gameplay and content might change when it reaches version 1.0. So what do you have to do? In a nutshell, you must manage to pay your greedy landlord rent eleven times in a row, to the point of making him explode with his cash. But achieving this will be quite a task. After all, you'll be preparing the food, serving it, cleaning the plates when your patrons finish their meals, and making sure you have enough ingredients for the entire run. Now, I haven't been able to unlock the second level so far. I'm about 40% off the mark after 10 hours of gameplay, which is pretty good. But essentially, you have the workstation in front of you, with a mixer on the left to make the juices. Next to it are the ingredient containers, which you need to keep as full as possible. The sush mat is next to the containers, and on the right-hand side will be your grill, which also has three ingredient containers next to it. And on the far right is the recipe book, in case you forget how the dishes you are offering your patrons are made. I believe the second level differs in terms of the workstation, ingredients, and recipes. Is it going to be hectic? Not for the first two payments, but after that, you'd wish you were born with a few pairs of arms, that's for sure. The run will start with the same recipe (in level one), which is the Onigiri (rice and seaweed). Customers will start appearing at your workstation with their orders. The maximum number of customers you'll have at any given time is four, at least on the first level; after that, I can't tell. After placing their order, which is an image of the recipe, you'll notice a gauge next to it. This gauge starts depleting the moment the order is placed, and you have to serve the dish to the customer before it's completely depleted. If you don't, the client will be angry and leave, not tipping you. It will also affect your star rating, which in turn will affect the client's overall tips. So the goal is to keep serving the right dish on time, clear plates, and keep turning order after order. Remember, your landlord will keep raising the rent whenever he wants his money. So, you have to go faster and faster to keep up with his demand. It will become very tricky, especially when you have recipes with up to 9 ingredients to make with your Sushi mat, as well as dishes that require cooking on the grill! It will become a mad Sushi house! But that's not all! As you serve the correct dishes on time, not only do you get paid for your hard work, but you'll also receive experience points. The XP gauge is at the top of your screen, and when it is full, you'll be prompted to choose from one of three cards that will pop up on your screen. Take your time before selecting one, because it will determine whether you have a losing or a winning run. For example, you might have a card that increases the speed of the Shusi mat. If the last ingredient placed on the mat is seaweed, it might double your XP each time a dish is consumed. It increases the price of a dish or gives you a new dish to serve your goblin patrons. There are nearly 200 cards, giving you plenty of variations that make each run a bit different from the others. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention that odd goblin characters will turn up too, such as the goblin devils who can offer things with a string attached, or the salesman who is happy to sell your perk (cards), tough choices, let me tell you. But there is one thing that has bugged me since I started playing this game. There is no guidance on how to unlock things, as you don't have a Gamepedia available to you. Sure, it will tell you at the end of the run that you unlocked a new feature, because you served a specific dish for X amount of time. But because there is no guidance on what to do next, you have no idea how to unlock something else and move up to the next level, which is annoying. The graphics are fun, the game in itself is surprisingly addictive and has a couple of levels of difficulty. The sound the goblins make after consuming their meals is very similar to the sound of the martians in the movie Mars Attacks! Cracked me up every time, knap knap knap! lol. Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Fun graphics and music + Nearly 200 cards to select from + Good selection of Japanese dishes + Fun, chaotic and addictive gameplay + Each run is slightly different + A few levels of difficulty + Achievements Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - It is a bit repetitive - Need a gamepedia and guidance on how to unlock things - No trading cards as yet Goblin Sushi is a fun and addictive cooking game. A Gamepedia and some guidance on how to unlock things would elevate it. 7/10 Note: Key provided directly by the developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own!
Yum Yum Yum, SUSHI! Would actually recommend 10/10 Why ? Is like playing cooking game + with card mechanism + you need to use your brain to combo and earn AS MUCH AS you can. Btw I like the sound effect when they eating : yum yum
What a fun little game! So easy to pick up and very cute animations as well. It provides a little twist to the usual serving games with the card mechanics so every run is different. So chaotic I love it!
