NOTE: This game was given to me by the developer for review purposes. This did not influence my review in any way.
========================================================== ---------------------------------------OVERVIEW------------------------------------- ==========================================================
Glow is a 3D shoot-em-up featuring a firefly as the protagonist. The game is all about the action; there's no story to speak of, although the in-game text includes some tongue-in-cheek scientific firefly lore. You play a firefly with access to a deadly arsenal of glow-based weaponry, intent on dealing death to thousands of spiders ... and a few slugs.
========================================================== ----------------------------------------QUALITY------------------------------------- ==========================================================
Graphics - Glow's graphics are somewhat mixed. The firefly and enemy models are relatively simple, with the firefly and its reinforcements seeming particularly lacklustre, but the terrain and level graphics are very pretty, and the lighting and special effects are excellent. The game moves very quickly, so you only really have time to admire the graphics when watching someone else play, or on the levels when you have to spend a bit of time mopping up stragglers at the end. There's a small collection of graphics options, including the normal resolution and windowed/full screen, as well as vsync, and various detail options. I experienced no slowdown in 1920x1080 with max settings on a new gaming laptop with a GTX 1070 video card. Sound - Sound effects are acceptable, but nothing too remarkable. Music is forgettable and even occasionally annoying. I'm not sure if it's only one track or a handful of them that all sound very similar, but after the first quarter of an hour I turned off the sound and didn't miss it at all. Gameplay - Glow is a fast third-person 3D shooter played from above and behind the firefly, which is the game's protagonist. The core gameplay involves moving around a relatively small outdoor level, blasting spiders and slugs with three different types of weapons at once, and collecting powerups to try to stay alive. I played for about two-and-a-half hours and unlocked 11 of 19 achievements, and only saw three levels -- meadow, mountain path, and canyon -- and a handful of different enemy types: maybe five types of spiders and a single type of slug. There may be more arenas and enemy types down the track, but unfortunately this lack of variation makes Glow get repetitive fairly quickly. After not discovering any more enemy types or arenas in my last hour of play, I assume I've seen all of them. Where Glow excels, though, other than the excellent weapon graphics, is in the number of weapons available. For any encounter you can equip your firefly with a light weapon, a heavy weapon, an ordnance (think 'bomb'), and a passive ability. You begin the game with only a single light weapon, but as you play you quickly unlock more of each type, and I found myself wanting to keep playing through another couple of levels just to see what the next unlock would bring. I can only assume that's the developers' intent. The game includes 'partial controller support', according to the Steam page, but I only used mouse and keyboard: WASD to move, with mouse to control the crosshairs and shoot the various weapons. Unfortunately there's no controller customisation, and mouse sensitivity is set quite low. Glow lacks some polish in some areas, too. For example, there's poor grammar and other mistakes in the in-game text, no control customisation, occasional crashes to desktop, no map or indication of where enemies are (leaving you hunting around at the end of some levels for that one lonely spider), no sound on the title screen, a sad smiley when the firefly dies, and the user interface in the menus feels a bit underdeveloped. But it all basically works, and the graphics really do look great in the heat of the action.
========================================================== -------------------------------------PROS & CONS------------------------------------ ==========================================================
Pros: + Excellent dynamic lighting and weapon effects + It's a nice idea for a shooter Cons: - Very repetitive: levels, enemies, gameplay, music - Lacks polish
========================================================== --------------------------------------CONCLUSION----------------------------------- ==========================================================
If Glow cost any more than its current retail price, I wouldn't recommend it. It's a great demo, but there's not enough here to warrant paying more than a few dollars. Levels and enemy types are limited, and the game really has only one gimmick going for it: a lot of weapons to unlock with mostly very pretty special effects. But it's fun for a few hours, in spite of its faults. It's better than Holy Cows, but it would have benefited from more time in Early Access! - Gameplay is fun and original but gets boring pretty quick: I got to level 4 and still only fought spiders. Devs need to mix it up earlier to keep players interested. - Keybindings are unchangeable (!) I never used the alt-fire because i was unable to reach the key. Unfortunately, there is no "undecided" on steam. Buy only if you see the potential and trust developers to improve (like early access). If you expect a finished/polished game, and 5 bucks is a lot of money for you: stay away!
Glow: ~~~~ As humans, we have no idea what it means to be part of the Lampyridae (firefly) family, and even less of the challenges they have to face day in and day out. All we know is that they glow at night. This is going to be an eye-opener and it is going to glow! Glow is an action/third insect shooter game where you take control of a firefly whose goal is to eliminate a specific number of spiders and slugs per level and reach the next stage. Before you start a level, you will know what type of enemy and how many of them you will have to destroy to clear this particular stage. For the first couple of levels, your firefly will only be able to rely on the light and heavy attacks (first grade) setup. As you clear levels, you will be given upgrades for these as well as other additional perks such as minion wingmen, proximity mines and others. As you clear levels, the difficulty will increase as your enemies (arachnids & molluscs) will spawn at very short intervals and in greater numbers. The great news is you can customize your firefly weapons before each level; find the right combination and you will fly through that level! Otherwise, you will have to try it again. In regards to the gameplay, Glow is fast and fun. Depending how you setup your firefly (perks and upgrades) you might clear a level fairly quickly or start it over and over. Graphically, the game looks very good. In terms of controls you can use your mouse and keyboard or gamepad. For me, the mouse and keyboard is the way to go. Positives: ~~~~~~~ - Good graphics - Fast and fun gameplay - Achievements Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - Repetitive - Needs more foe Glow is a fast, fun third-insect shooter for all ages. 7/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes. GLOW constantly alternates between serene and unsettling, I like the minimalistic artstile and the soundtrack is just awsome!

Its not a bad game at all, even tho it dosent offer much variation its still fun, you fly around and nuking these different kind of bugs, the further you progress the more bugs and the bigger variation of them, but you also gets new weapon you can equip in a loadout the more you progress, its a casual fast paced shooter, looks good, feels good, and for the price its recommended. Heres some gameplay https://youtu.be/YXRuiqGuEtY
this game got me hooked. after a few tries i read the enemies and managed to aim correctly, so i could concentrate on what to do next. the unlockable weapons and perks invite you to try new strategies. do i machinegun them down, after doing doing aera-damage with bombs ? do i snipe them down while the poision attacks drain the remaining life? the movement is great, and feels well-adjusted. this is a sweet shooter and excellent air-to-surface combat !
Great game! Really enjoyed the idea of being a bug :) It is a great game for playing if you don't have much time and just having fun... OK, sometimes it makes you addicted to kill the next spiders...
so far I see the potential its a little like buck bumble on N 64 , but keybindings need work its not really that playable with the current pre set configoration , I want to play this game properly ! its weird enough to capture my attention .. just needs better controller support. Oh you can play with mouse and keyboard and that works better , but its not the same. If you liked Buck Bumble as I did.. give this a try. Its a imaginative little game with decent graphics , just needs decent xbox controller key bindings where you can fire without taking a hand off the controller. I`ll conclude... I think the devs can easily fix these small issues I believe there is a place for these types of imaginative little games ...I like it.
