The difficulty level is not casual and very unforgiving, but the game does exactly what it's advertised to do. Currently the game is on sale at 65% off at 1.04 USD (Base 2.99), I think the discount price is probably what I would think is ideal for this game. I say this in all honesty, this is one of those games that will cause the player some sheer frustration due to its difficulty, but not due to glitches or other issues. The gameplay is simple, you move left and right with A and D, and you aim and click your left mouse button to throw your "telenade." Where this ends up is where you will ultimately teleport to, and you can cut this short by clicking your mouse button again. There is no jumping, and there's very little walking. All of your actions are by teleportation. I think the subtitle should read "Walking and Jumping Are For Chumps," but hey, the actual name works well too. The actions are simple, but the platforming is so very difficult. You have to make split second decisions on what to do and how to react next, otherwise you are easily caught in an endless loop of redoing the same thing again and again. This is a bit frustrating, and a bit addictive as well. I just watched the game trailer after playing quite a while without making too much progress. The game is only 24 levels with a few unlockable extra-difficult challenge levels. I don't think I will ever see these levels myself, to be honest. The base levels are hard enough for me. Fortunately any level you have completed is now unlocked and you can redo only that one as you wish. This is important because there is an achievement for getting 3 stars on each level. I must say, no level is easy to achieve all 3 stars, except for maybe the very first level. The difficulty of the game comes in multiple layers, the constant gravitation effect on the main character, the fact that there are quite a few death-fail states possible, mobile enemy projectiles that are predictable but really difficult to avoid, plus the simple puzzle element of having certain spaces where your character can pass through, but your telenade cannot, and also vice versa. Put them all together, you got yourself in a really tough situation. (There are some secrets to find too, for me it was difficult enough trying to complete the basic levels that I have seen.
Controls
As above, keyboard A/D and mouse for aim and throwing/detonating your telenade.
Graphics and Music
Graphics are 2D platforming with a simple yet pleasant retro style. The music tracks are decent, nothing too fancy, but not bad either.
Audience
Not for the casual player, not for the easily enraged player. This is really really difficult. And the mechanics may put off some players. Definitely look at the trailer and decide whether or not you even want to take this dive.
Price
As mentioned, base price of 2.99 USD and currently on sale at 65% off at 1.04 USD. I think the sale price is rather appropriate.
Positives
+No bugs in playing for almost an hour +Simple to learn, so easy to pick up +Interesting idea, to take the player away from the traditional puzzle platforming a bit +Reasonably priced
Negatives
-Challenging, perhaps a bit too challenging -Some may find the overall game to be too simplistic in gameplay. It has a casual look and feel but extremely difficult to actually play -In maps when you cannot see the whole field for that level, it would be nice to have some way to actually see whole level to make your plans--I do not think you can at this time
Conclusion
Glorch's Great Escape: Walking is for Chumps is challenging and perhaps too difficult, but it's an interesting indie title that may also give you a challenge for your skills and your split-second decision making. Currently it's on sale and I would say it's worth the sale price. As for your time and your style, you have to decide for yourself--go look at the trailer. You will probably experience many failures on many levels before finding your way out. The puzzle aspect is there constantly and there is little left to chance, given the level designs. There are too many fail states and a lot of timed actions to guarantee that this game is not casual in experience. The important thing to note is that regardless of actual difficulty, there's not much in the way of bugs that cause additional frustration--of course there was enough of that anyway.
Glorch this game is for chumps.
Very nice game
I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.
