Reviews
Let me preface this a bit as I've never really written reviews before, so bear with me as I'm probably going to stumble through my explanations. I had the pleasure of playing a demo version of Glö Phlox at EGLX 2018, and given the experience I had there, I can confidently say the full release was worth the wait. Gameplay: True to its claim, Glö Phlox is indeed a twin-stick, bullet hell metroidvania. It is a fairly expansive yet simplistic world with tight controls that, in its own words, are "easy to learn and hard to master". When you aren't traversing the overworld through Cordette's Bloom Rush - which is your invuln-dash for the game - you're probably going to be fighting the myriad of enemies. Most of the game revolves around your dash and your crossbow, though it is important to note you cannot move and shoot at the same time. It may seem counter-intuitive at first, but what this makes you do is learn the enemy mechanics first and learn your openings so you can capitalize on them to dish out damage with your crossbow. The fodder is easy enough to deal with, unless you're like me and you decide to try and dash passed all of them, only to pull too many and get swamped by the projectiles. The bosses each have their gimmicks, though they are not always easy to exploit, leaving you on your toes while you balance your dodging and your offense. Each boss seems to take a few minutes even if you're up against them for the first time and learning. It might seem unfair due to the aforementioned bullet hell, but that makes it all the more satisfying when you finally get that one amazing run. Additionally, the game does a very good job at telling you where your core abilities are. At any time you can also check your map, with certain icons letting you know what you got and what you could have missed. Also, does music count as gameplay? If so, the tracks are great. In terms of cons, I can only really think of wanting a fast-travel system, though the traditional formula for metroidvanias were never really big on them. Additionally, sometimes it seems like some of the abilities don't work as intended, but that usually falls into the optional collectibles, as I had no trouble completing the game even if I didn't 100% it for my first run. Story: Cordette is an amnesiac elf searching for answers, slowly piecing together her memories as she travels through the various areas. For the sake of being spoiler-free, I can't divulge the entire plot or the characters, but I will say that I was given enough information to figure certain things out. Some may prefer the 'twist out of nowhere', but I'm a firm believer that a good twist is one that the audience can figure out, because it means it had the build-up and the information was there, and it doesn't feel injected unnaturally. The story isn't necessarily revolutionary, but it's definitely not abyssmal. Again, it's a story about an elf girl trying to figure out what's going on. That, and Cordette has the purest smile this face of the planet. All in all, Glö Phlox was a fun experience that I see myself playing over, not only to collect everything but to also find whatever hidden speedrunner strats there are. It's a good game, and it's clear to see the effort that went into it.

played for an hour straight, felt like 10 mins. Challenging yet fun nice mix of both
Played the game for an hour, loved the art style and game play, definitely recommend using a controller both ps4 and xbox controllers work smoothly with this game. It does get challenging at times but is definitely worth playing. for an indie game it is extremely well done!
This game runs quite smoothly, the character handling is great and a lot of fun. The artwork for the character is so vibrant and the colour choices for the game are really nice. I've only played a short while into the game but its fun and i'm currently trying to defeat the first boss which is difficult but not too much as to force a rage quit. I think the game would be best played on a controller because the controls are a bit uncertain for a mouse and keyboard. Oh and the abilities are really fun to use!!
Glo Phox is what I like to call, an ‘itch-scratcher’, the type of game that excels at ‘scratching an itch’ for a particular type of game. Itch scratchers aren’t necessarily the best at what they do, but will satisfy nonetheless. If you liked Hyper Light Drifter, and want something akin to that, this will scratch some of that itch, though it has more of a focus on ‘bullet hell’ style combat, and It’s significantly shorter than Hyper Light Drifter. My Hyper Light Drifter playthrough nearly reached 30 hours after hunting some achievements. Glo Phox only took 6 hours, and a significant portion of those 6 hours was wasted on a LOT of backtracking, combing through the world ‘trial-and-erroring’ to try and figure out how to progress. While I’d generally say it’s ‘a little rough around the edges’, it was mostly fun. The only major issue I have is that it fails quite badly in certain areas of communication, for example
the game gives you two types of explosives, a bomb, and bomb arrows. Each explosive only explodes one type of stone block, while it’s clear that the bomb is intended to explode blocks when you get it, after getting the bomb arrows and attempting to use them to explode the same blocks the bomb blew up, I figured they couldn’t be used to explode the stone blocks. Later, I ran into a different coloured stone block, and attempted to blow them up with the bomb, to no avail. As it turns out, the bomb arrows had to be used to blow those other coloured stone blocks up. This is something you have to find out with experience.
or
in certain rooms there exists a ‘sign’ of sorts, that visibly reacts to being shot, but doesn’t explain what shooting it does. What these sings do, evidently is open doors, but only temporarily, while the sign is spinning from being shot, the door in the same room will be open, so you have to use an ability to set a teleportation point to the door, then go to the sign, shoot it, teleport to the door, and quickly go through. However, to ensure that you can’t shoot the sign and get through the door without using the teleportation ability, the signs are so far away from the doors that you can’t see the doors open when you shoot the signs. And the game shows it has the ability to move the camera away from the player to communicate these things during other parts of the game, but just doesn’t do it in this instance, leading to you having to make the connection that these signs are only in rooms with doors that can’t seem to be opened any other way yourself.
. All that being said, if you want something that’ll scratch the itch Hyper Light Drifter left you, with more of a bullet hell focus, this’ll be a good few fun hours of just that.

Pretty good twin-stick metroidvania. There were a few bugs but nothing to keep me from finishing it.
This is an amazing indie twin stick shooter with a dark-souls esque story filled with mystery and intrigue. I hope we get a sequel where we see more of Cordette and Angelo.
