A better Mega Man clone than Mighty No. 9
45 minute quick impressions: This is a simple jump-and-shoot platformer. You start with a boomerang and get another weapon after beating the first boss. + Graphics are simple, but decent for the style and price of the game. + Music is good, but a bit repetitive. + Controls are good enough. + The boomerang is fast and fun to use. + It's three bucks. - The levels are long, including 2 mini-boss (?) fights, with no checkpoints that I can tell until right before the main boss of the level. - There are many places where enemies unavoidably hit you, unless you know they are coming, or inch ahead slowly. ~ The one boss I got to was pretty easy. ~ You only have 3 lives to finish a level. There is 1 extra life on the first level that is always there after dying, so you effectively have infinite lives on level 1, up until the boss. ~ Escape insta-quits the game. I only see 5 levels on the map. The first level took me about 15 minutes to learn and beat. I assume the others will take longer. If you don't mind dying a lot to learn where things jump out at you. it's reasonably fun for the price.

Okay…where do I begin with this one? I guess we could start with the inspiration for this game. Giga Girl is an indie game that plays and looks a lot like Mega Man. No, wait. What I meant to say is this game is Mega Man. The protagonist is a gender-swapped Mega Man right down to the name. Robots are revolting and she must stop the obligatory villain causing it – the exact same premise as in Mega Man. Giga Girl itself is a retro-esque 2D platformer-shooter with end bosses that have powers that you will come to possess. Just like Mega Man. So why did I not enjoy this game like I have enjoyed the Mega Man series? Well, let’s get this review over with. Audio I’ll start with the best of the three categories. I like that the music strays from the usual retro-style treatment. Rather than taking the NES chiptune approach, the game instead sounds more like it’s coming from a Commodore 64 or a DOS computer. The soundtrack isn’t particularly memorable but it’s refreshing and has charm to it. Graphics As you may notice from these screenshots, the graphics aren’t exactly what can be considered up to snuff. Some of them look alright such as the tiles and bigger bosses. Other parts look either too plain or half-baked. Giga Girl herself looks way too uncanny with that oddly sized head of hers. Overall the art style simply feels like details are missing. It certainly doesn’t look like an actual NES game that’s for sure. Gameplay As expected from the get-go, the objective in Giga Girl is to traverse a platforming gauntlet to get to the end of the level and face an evil robotic menace. Any of the levels on the map can be played in any order. Of course, the baddies’ powers can come in handy in certain situations that could help make your life easier. There aren’t as many situational uses as there are in a Mega Man game but believe me, you will need every advantage you can get. There’s a good variety of enemies in each of the game’s levels and just about all of them can SCREW RIGHT THE CRAP OFF AND DIE IN A HOLE!!! Giga Girl hits all of the wrong notes for a “challenging” oldschool-esque platformer. There’s annoying knockback, instant death spikes, and annoying knockback that can launch you straight into instant death spikes! Enemies can pop out of nowhere to land a cheap hit on you. Certain objects have a hitbox that’s a pixel or two wider than they actually are (Yes, including the death spikes) and then there are times where you’d simply have no choice but to get hit by an enemy even when you do see it coming!!! This game is unnecessarily relentless! Does it want to be played or not? There is no real learning curve, only the worst kind of trial and error awaits. Then there are the scrappier mechanics in Giga Girl. The underwater sections. My God the underwater sections! There’s only a few of them in the entire game but they are agonizingly slow and give enemies greater chances to attack since you are unable to react quickly. The spinning mid-air platforms from Air Man’s sta-I mean the sky stage also deserve a dishonorable mention for being nothing but there for the sake of tedium and adding time to the level’s length. Unlike in Air Man’s stage in Mega Man 2, these platforms appear in more than one area. Worst of all, Giga Girl doesn’t refill your life count whenever coming back from loading a save file or a Game Over. The power-up ammo I can maybe understand since health and item pickups aren’t too rare but freaking lives?! Is the developer sure six people playtested this and not one of them brought this to his attention?! The game’s already too unfair and frustrating to be fun. Whenever you beat a boss, however many lives you had then is how much you have if you continue the game from there. The only reason why I ever had five lives at one point was because I found a spot where there were two 1ups mistakenly placed instead of just one. I briefly used that abuse to my advantage. I don’t feel bad at all for using it too. Verdict Overall the actual Mega Man style wasn’t badly implemented in Giga Girl. In fact, there’s a chance this could have been a decent game. It has the potential to be a fine not-Mega Man if it had fair enough level designs and enemy placements. But guess what? Giga Girl is instead a brutally punishing witch with a capital B. There is no sense of real challenge to be had with this game. Everything is there as a constant disadvantage for the player. That’s not fun.
I don’t think this game was playtested at all before release. Giga Girl screams retro nostalgia. It promotes itself as a game inspired by classic Mega Man games. It looked retro, it looked spunky and it had no reviews when I first discovered it. I figured why not? I love Mega Man games, and I missed playing them. After spending a good amount of time trying Giga Girl I am left disappointed. Giga Girl, while inspired by Mega Man, doesn’t have the gameplay to back it up. At first I thought it was retro hard. I laughed it off and kept trying. Then I thought, it may be be one of those really retro games that demanded you memorize level layouts. After discovering enemies are somewhat spawn and act somewhat randomly I ruled that out. Then it set in. Giga Girl is just a bad game. Giga Girl is just a frustrating and cheap experience wrapped in a nostalgic package. Expect unavoidable projectiles or enemies jumping in from different angles off screen. Think about this. Enemies do not behave the same during repeat game sessions. Most spawn at the same areas, but how they move and act differs. That means you can’t even prepare for the cheap attacks even if you know they’re coming. The enemies might just jump in a little higher, lower, or faster. It’s maddening. In one area a group of birds spawn randomly near a large enemy who just so happens to spit out projectiles…again randomly. It gets even worse because the colliders seem off. Enemies look like they don’t hit you somehow do damage. Want another bad level design example? How about Giga Girl’s rotating platforms. They rotate randomly. At times, platforming seems almost impossible. But wait it gets even worse! Sometimes they have enemies on top of them. These enemies shoot you off screen, but they rotate in such a way that you cannot kill them. BUT IT GETS EVEN WORSE! Sometimes these platforms overlap. You’ll find yourself rotating into an enemy leading to yet another cheap death. Giga Girl is a lesson in how NOT to do a retro platformer.
Faithful Mega Man Clone
Giga Girl is a lot of fun and plays similarly to the original Mega Man series. The difficulty feels balanced, as the levels aren’t too long and are packed with some secrets. For a game that costs $3, it sure feels worth more than that. The sound track is really energetic and memorable. Pros -Responsive Controls -Fun levels -Secrets and refrences to other games -Faithful mega man clone -Tough bosses -Costs $3 Cons -Doesn't have some of the later features of the Mega Man series like slide -Not enough weapon energy for the boss weapons Check out part 1 of my gameplay to see the game in action https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpJd4ppK56Q
this is like one of those mega man 3 edits but instead of making coherent levels they made EVERYTHING over a pit with questionable enemy placement.
Cheap megaman boomerang type with poor animation or standing position. Bigger flaw is the poor sound effect and lack of catchy music. A lot sound don't fit well, like it don't sound like a boomerang. Tight jump and bad recoil when you get hit make it really annoying. Not a fun level design when you fail out and die with some placed enemy you can't avoid. but you can take some or hit or maybe lure them out. Maybe some difficulty change on the level will be nice. Also the extra weapons didn't feel good with very limited ammo. Good for free flash games but don't feel ready and fun for commercial. 4.5/10 Hope the developper improve. Maybe i'm little harsh review may change but really i did't have first good impression At least that game free bug didn't notice any. I can see many easter egg in the screenshot but i rage too much feeling unfair to found them.
