Get-A-Grip Chip is a charming and satisfyingly challenging grappling hook 2D platformer. Master the hook and fling through the increasingly intense floors of Roboco Mfg. Chuck Chip over chainsaws, launch over lasers, and even escape chases with Scan-It Janet.
[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Is this game a masterpiece? Well, you are probably not looking at an immortal piece of computer gaming history, but nevertheless this game is surprisingly addicting and very refined. It is kind of a platformer, but with a twist. Your little robot can move left and right, but his tiny wheels do not allow him to jump. This is not was he was made for. He has a powerful grappling hook, though, and can hang to anchor points and then catapult in any desired direction. This way it is possible to fly over dangers and reach the level exit. I would describe the game mechanic as a twin-stick... grappler. You go left/right with the LS (left stick) and aim your hook with the RS. Works like a charm. Your little robot was just produced in a fully automated robot facility when an accident happened and a large explosion shattered the factory. Chip, as he is called, fell down in the cellar. To survive he has to escape from this dangerous place full of deadly production machines, while rescuing little batteries. And maybe repair the damaged factory after travelling through 30 levels. And this is fun. Grappling from point to point is incredibly satisfying, as long as you hit the anchor point and use it to catapult in the right direction, either to a safe place or to the next anchor point. The little battery robots he wants to rescue are often hidden rather well in the levels, Chip has to go an extra mile to rescue them all. Dying means you are transported back to the last savepoint, which are spread over the levels. The game comes with online leaderboards that allow you to compare your scores with the other players. I always love that. Quite a few system options (for an indie platformer), no ultrawide support (but works perfect with black borders left and right), controller is of course supported as well. Conclusion: Innovative, cute little platformer with a surprisingly fluid gameplay and kind of... addicting. Really nice!
This game is incredibly fun. Once you get through the first few levels and get a handle on the grappling mechanics you can really start zipping from hook point to hook point to solve your way around the games various obstacles (and saving those dear, dear Battery Bots). it is equal parts satisfying, challenging and addicting. Couple that with vibrant, charming visuals and an awesome soundtrack and it is well worth the price of admission. I would highly recommend to anyone with even the slightest interest in fun, creative platformers.
a fun and challenging little platformer. Loved the way the music went with the levels, I found myself nodding along with a bunch of the songs, and Chip is such a fun protagonist. Took me about 4 hours to beat, but I did end up playing a bunch of levels again to try and climb the leaderboards for time as well as rescue more of the little robots. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking for a fun indie platformer!
Very fun grapple physics are unique and designed well! I think it's probably from the scale of easy too challenging a solid good it teaches you mechanics while you play. You can actually learn the game while playing which is better than most. Definitely worth it!
Get-A-Grip Chip is a refreshingly innovative take on platformers! I am magnetized to its fluid gameplay, charming storyline, and catchy soundtrack. To anyone hesitating on playing this game, I would say, get a grip!!!
Genre: -Precision Platformer Fit for me: -My fav genre, so excellent fit Quick Description: -Cute, creative platformer that stands out due to it's limited movement and grappling hook mechanic. While a fun option that will give most players 5+ hrs on their first playthrough, it's limited skill ceiling ultimately makes this title lag behind the best precision platformers out there. What's Good: -Fresh, original take on the precision platformer genre. The limited movement options combined w/ the grappling mechanic make for some really innovative platforming sections. -Very easy to learn, and not too difficult to master. Not nearly as intimidating as games like N++, Celeste, or Super Meat Boy. -Doesn't overstay it's welcome. There are 5 environments w/ 6 different levels filled w/ platforming sections in each. Each level feels fun and builds on the previous level. It was really enjoyable from start to finish, and I never felt like the formula was getting stale. -There are 8 collectible batteries to find per level. During the later stages, the batteries are really well hidden and essentially create a harder mode by attempting to collect them. -Creative HUB that makes you feel like you are inside a factory in between levels Could Use a Few Changes: -Very low skill ceiling. B/c you are so limited in your movement options, there isn't a ton of room for creativity. -Low replayability. This is similar to the low skill ceiling. There are only 30 levels, there is no online level editor. There are a good amount of collectibles to collect and a leaderboard for speedrunning but I don't see this being the type of platformer to sink hundreds of hours into. -Nothing special about the soundtrack. I wasn't the biggest fan. It does fit the game, but I'd like a bit more of an upbeat soundtrack especially during intense chase levels. -The art style works but isn't as interesting or creative as better platformers Thoughts: -I had a good time w/ this one. I love precision platformers but I was in the mood for something a little different than the traditional fast twitch platformer and Get-A-Grip-Chip was a good fit. Although the art style is limited, it is cute and fits well w/ the temp of the game. The grappling hook takes a few levels to adjust to but quickly becomes really fun as you start feeling more comfortable using it. Avoiding the endless environmental hazards and finding all of the secret batteries while grappling hook your way across the levels feels really rewarding. This is a solid choice for less experienced platforming fans as well as those looking for a break from the toughest precision platformers in the genre. Consensus: -Middle of the Road Game (Tier 4 and makes up 25% of my reviews). This is a slam dunk pickup when on sale. It's an easy game to pick up and have fun; it won't make you rage quit like some of the toughest platformers out there. It's not a bad price at $15, but $10 or under is great value. So, if you like cute, creative platformers, give this one a try!
I really enjoyed this title - the mechanics are smooth and easy to employ. I played it on keyboard and mouse and the game itself recommends that the player should use a controller. I really liked keyboard and mouse. Its a great platformer to speedrun; for a greater challenge try to find all of the battery bots. There's 8 per level and some are overt, others are hidden. There's a fun rhythm grab, pull, and release. Building momentum is part of the fun. The set pieces on each level keep the game interesting. The highlight is the cute character design and the soundtrack, which I loved.
Cute robot game with polished gameplay and a cool soundtrack :)
