I'm not sure what it is. Playing through the campaign single player it just doesn't feel like a gauntlet game. It feels much worse than Dark Legacy. Might be more fun with friends later. They have a riveting story of you're entertaining a wizard for money. (Spoiler) They changed death drastically. You can't kill him with a potion anymore, now he just follows you slowly and if he touches you it's instant death. But he just disappears and reappears in some levels just because. Basically they've made death a temporary annoyance. Same with actually dying. Respawn in 5 seconds, pick up your gold, carry on. There's 0 stakes, 0 story, nothing to compel the initial grind. Might be worth checking out for 3$, definitely not worth 20$.
I honestly would have liked this game ever so slightly more if it had not called itself Gauntlet. As someone who grew up on Dark Legacy, this game just wasn't anything I was after. Might be worth the 85% off sale price if you want a simple hack and slash, but keep in mind that there just isn't much game here. Extremely little progression, only four characters with very few (only 3, if memory serves) buttons to push each, and every level felt like they were made by a roguelike's generator and had the visual template applied afterward. There's very little here and they shouldn't have called it Gauntlet. Do not pay more than about $5 for this. Its purchase price in your snack of choice will last longer and probably be more enjoyable.

14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 11: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

Worse than the gamecube Gauntlet Dark Legacy. Not at all worth the money unless it was free or on sale for a couple of bucks. The Death is now a super annoyance who comes out 100 times a level with NO way to kill him anymore. The Wizard has been reduced to some slow spell changing garbage. I NEVER play games on easy and playing solo on easy is a challenge unless you pick Valkyrie or every char fully kitted out. Honestly Id rather play an exact Gauntlet Dark Legacy remake than this sorry excuse for a gauntlet game. I mean it is "Arrowhead" so what did I really expect to be honest.
Pales in comparison to Gauntlet Legends or Dark Legacy back in the day but, for the budget this game was given, a damn fine adventure to coop with friends :)
If your looking for a follow up to the cult classic gauntlet dark legacy or legends this isn't it. It's a watered down version of the gauntlet series While it's not a betrayal to the name like seven sorrows. This one takes the basics and reduces them to the proto version of the games. Same environment dungeons none of the unique atmosphere.
This game is kinda fun but damn is it unbalanced af if you're playing solo, would I recommend if you have friends to play with? Sure. solo? Eeeeeeeh, at your own discretion, really, but I personally wouldn't recommend it, it's pretty frustrating even in the early levels. If you're built different then go for it.
Despite the flaws this game has, and the legacy it may or may not live up to depending on your history with the franchise, Gauntlet is still my favorite horde-slayer in 2025. I have nearly a thousand hours between Vermintide 2 and Darktide, and have greatly enjoyed time in Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, Helldivers 2, GTFO, Magicka 1 & 2, and other games of their kind. I wouldn't say that Gauntlet is a better game than any of the others listed, but it is a good game, and one I personally strongly recommend. The vast majority of my time in the game was singleplayer, but any opportunity to play with friends is a welcome one.
If you're looking for a Gauntlet Legends experience like you had on N64 this is not it. I could see SOME people paying the $3 sale price but if you're paying full price may God have Mercy on your Soul and your Wallet.
