Great game! You would like it if you enjoyed braid-like puzzle games. The last part (after getting all upgrades & multi gun) felt little bit short for me.. but you can still find more levels in workshop!
Its peak
Too complicated, not for me!
great puzzles. some took me a long time to figure out. love the challenge and creativity.
This little gem is high on my list of favorite games. It's a puzzle game, like Portal, but laid out on a metroidvania-style map. It's pretty short, ~5 hours, but absolutely worth the price and one of those games I wish I could forget and enjoy for the first time again. The game caters to puzzle-platformer audiences more than metroidvania audiences, but if you like both genres then this game is perfect. It has some key differences from traditional metroidvanias: - The map has a "next objective" arrow to let you know where to go, but nonlinear exploration is still encouraged and rewarding. - In lieu of bosses, new gateway guns and puzzle mechanics are introduced. - Most puzzles can be skipped by "buying" the solution with power orbs; this gives you a replay of the solution to watch so you don't miss out on important lessons. Also, when reading other reviews, please note: - The game's default difficulty was eased around mid-2013. Original levels were renamed "hard" mode, and the new default is "normal" mode. This mostly just changes the endgame, but I would strongly recommend playing normal mode the first time around. - The time gun has a sharp learning curve, but it's actually pretty simple once you know how it works. Definitely save up power orbs and buy a solution the first time you get stuck, and study the solution to see if it helps. - The game is a lot more difficult if you don't get plenty of extra powerups, most of which make the time gun puzzles easier to execute.
Very fun. A few bad things that I noticed: - The Music is loud when starting the game - The Time Gateway is less fun without the time suit - When waiting to place a Gateway, it sometimes unselects the gateway and I have to move my mouse a bit for it to appear again. - Laser angles are weird and it didnt tell the player that Holding Q can turn the glass in smaller amounts - Not all Collectables are marked on the map (looking at you health upgrade 9) Otherwise a really fun game with nice puzzles and good graphics. 8/10
Very cool game
In short, Gateways is a well executed mix between a 2D Metroidvania, and Portal's namesake mechanic. If that sounds appealing to you, you probably won't be disappointed by this game. In fact, I'd go so far to say that this game alone justified the 10 USD pricetag on the bundle I bought it with. There is an endgame mechanic I will address here:
The time travel mechanic can get tricky, because of its low initial duration and inability to touch other instances of yourself. However, some upgrades alleviate this, and the Time Suit (optional final(?) upgrade) allows you to collide with your other instances as many times as you want.
