Really solid metroidvania with portalesque mechanics... might seem like a rip-off but its really done so well and transfered so naturally to 2D that its a game that deserves to be played by any platformer enthusiast that likes their action mixed in with a heavy dose of puzzle solving.
This game really does surprise you. It comes off as "portal, but in 2D, and minus the sense of humor." And well, it kind of is, but it does so much more. The puzzles get progressively harder and more complex as you get different guns, and the last sequence of puzzles before the end is kind of just completely brain-melting. There's a surprisingly high execution factor in some cases, as well. And this is only the normal difficulty. I've not played the game's "hard" mode but I doubt I'd be able to complete it if I did. The graphics are kind of ugly though, all things considered, but that's a minor knock against it.
You will hear a lot that this is mix of puzzle platformer and Portal, with an indie taste. But the game is original, and fun. Very simple mechanics but yet good puzzles presented to the player not too difficult, some require more thought than others and its really nice when you figure out on your own how to do it. But fear not, if you get stuck you can obtain the solutions right in the game and you can move on to clear the next level/puzzle. Lacking a bit of better sound effects and music, but those are still adequate to the game.
Gateways has a decent concept, sort of in the vein of those Portalesque games that followed in it's wake, but a reasonably decent game. Although, unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish the game. The puzzle design has some of the most difficult puzzles in the game being mandatory to complete, which wouldn't be a problem normally. But, the mechanic you unlock near the end of the game that enables these puzzles involves a lot of key timing and platforming that ended up being far too twitchy for me to finish. Ultimately, because I have no 'maybe' option, I have to vote No on Gateways because of this. Perhaps if they had structured the game a little differently I could recommend it. But sadly, if any of what I mentioned seems like a red flag for you, I'd look elsewhere.
Gateways is the game Quantum Conondrum should have been: A fun, clever game that takes Portal-thinking to the next level thanks to the new portal types. A must buy for any Portal fan.
Had to play through this entire game twice because i missed an achievement that finish the game without using any hints. Over all it's a really good Indie game that focus on Portal/Metroid type of action using a old labcoat professor. Decent graphics, Decent sound but what made this game stand out is not it's level design and interesting story but the Puzzle itself. Some of those puzzle will blow your up your mind. I had to use hint at several puzzle which made me play it twice but I have no regrets! I think the game length is a bit on the short side and lack of boss made it less interesting. Overall it's a really good metroidvania game. I am playing Rabi-Ribi at the same time and I like Rabi-Ribi only a little more then this game. 8/10 for a well made indie platform gem!
Short but enjoyable puzzle game, with some elements of timing and platform style precision required. I am not a champion platform gamer. The game was more of a know your tools and how to use them style. The better you are with the gadgets, the easier it is for the platforming. In some cases, the many gadgets give more than one way to solve a puzzle. The graphics are like that of classic Mario, but the controls and depth of game play is more advanced than even some major AAA game releases. It was rather short, but very enjoyable. I did end up using a guide to find a couple of things here and there, but never needed a guide for the puzzles, and never once needed a hint. The game is logical and well designed and was fun to figure out. I recommend this for those that like puzzle solving and thinking games. Do not judge this one by the graphics not being the latest high definition, or you will be missing out on a fun experience.
It seemed like something was missing. You'll be tempted to call this a 2D version of Portal but it's better in some ways (more kinds of guns/portals) and not in others. What's missing is more of that Portal-like puzzle/level design that was so much fun in that game. Another thing I think this game needs is better enemies and a little more combat but that's just a personal preference. Regarding gateway gun usage, you'll really have to put an effort into wrapping your brain around what the other guns can do and how they can be used together especially the time-travel gun and the gravity gun. There are definitely some brilliant ideas in this game like the way you can see through the gateways and how you can buy puzzle solutions when you get stuck. So, who's this game for? It's for people who want to casually figure out platforming puzzles using portals in a 2d world while their brain melts from the strain of understanding time-travel. One final note. There should be a level editor with this game but I don't currently see any mention of it so I don't really know if it's available yet.
Creativo y estimulante.
This game has a number of good concepts in it and I want to like it, but when the time-travel portals are tossed in it just becomes too obtuse and finicky. When I reveal the solutions for the more complicated puzzles with that mechanic, my response is less "I should have thought of that" and more "I would never be able to pull that off". Precisely coordinating five or more instances of yourself in a limited time-span on top of the general disorientation from the other powers is just too much.
