TL;DR: Extremely charming roguelike deckbuilder with an emphasis on pushing your luck and wagering progress on the promise of better outcomes. Distinct art-style brought to life with expressive animations and some very good audio-design in both the sound-effect and music categories. ------------- Gamble Tower is a roguelike deckbuilder. Everyone knows what those are. The things that help it to stand out are: -Your starting deck is composed of your character and a pet, each contributing half a deck and each belonging to one of three factions (with additional "neutral" cards functioning as a kind of fourth faction). Both character and pet can have passives and can be progressed, and you can lose them if they die on a run. This isn't as punishing as it might first sound, as there is meta-progression not tied to individual characters. Most meta-progression is in the "unlock new stuff" category rather than power. It kinda feels like an entirely different game here, almost like a Tarkov or a Hunt Showdown in that you are wagering a loadout on a run and hoping to make more than it is worth, not to mention avoid losing it if possible. -You gain cards (orbs in the game's lingo) and mana each turn as you'd expect, but cards can be discarded to provide one mana each, and your hand is not discarded at the end of turn, meaning you can set up chains of actions that would usually be reserved for much later in a run in other RL-DBs much earlier here. -All decks start with at least a couple of capture orbs. When enemies are downed they stick around for a turn before their body vanishes, and in that window of time you can use your capture orbs to convert them into usable orbs for your deck. Usually this means turning them into a summonable version of themselves, however sometimes they instead generate a spell or attack orb instead (hello devs, if you read this: please make it so we can check what the possible outcomes are of doing this, maybe when inspecting a monster?). You can have up to four summoned monsters on your side of the field, and given that enemies prioritise them it can be very helpful to have some in your deck. -Rather than selecting a path on a map every floor presents a few options which can all be pursued: a shop of some kind, either for orbs or "artefacts" (passive bonuses), an event room, a slot for either a per-run gatcha for orbs or an innkeeper and a slot for the gambler. Gamble Tower is all about pushing your luck while having all options available - the event room can always be ignored, but it has good risks/rewards to it, with possible unavoidable damage (the worst outcome) all the way to a heal or a variety of unique encounters with their own rewards. Meanwhile, the Gambler forces you to take risks without knowing what the next fight is going to be (unless it is a boss) and can influence if you want to spend down to zero in shops or not. -The Gambler blocks your path to the next encounter until you choose at least one of three wagers he offers (and you can take all three) - conditions that will affect how the next battle plays out, offering a bonus reward if successful and imposing a penalty if failed. So for example one wager might be "Do not go over 4 mana in a turn", another "Do not use a given category of orb in this fight" and another might be "At the start of each turn pay 15 "chips" (in-run gold)". Failing wagers might cause you to lose cards, lose chips, take HP damage, have some kind of negative effect added to one or more of your cards, etc... Some wagers warp the encounter such that they do not have fail-states, but you will be rewarded for choosing them at the end of the fight. Notably boss rooms always have the same three wagers, unique to each particular boss encounter. You can only ever pick one of the three when picking for Boss fights but it will both provide special unique rewards and force you to play the encounter in different ways. For example the first boss is in simple terms a tank and a dps, and all three wagers kill you as the fail-state. The first wager, which is recommended for beginners, requires you to kill the tank first. The second wager requires that the dps die first. And the third and hardest wager requires that you kill them both on the same turn. -Perma-death ties into the push-your-luck gimmick of the game - if you feel a run is scuffed you can just return to the starting tavern, forfeiting the run and any chips you might have been able to convert into meta-progression gold. HOWEVER, you can also choose to end a run after a boss encounter while converting any held chips into gold, allowing you to both keep characters you like and make progress if you feel that they were making not going to make it much further. Notably this means that you can just do boss 1 runs if you want to meta-prog without risking a good character/pet pairing, but the game is always tempting you to push your luck and see if you can maybe make it past the next boss for even better returns. -The Art and music have a distinct quality to them but from a personal perspective I really love the animations the otherwise static images have and the weird little voice-lines the devs recorded for every NPC. The music and sound effects are pretty cool too, imo. Linked to this - there are equipment cards in the game. When played, they show up on your character as appropriate. However, they can also be played on your summoned monsters and will ALSO show up on their models! You can make your summoned dudes wear hats or awkwardly wield weapons, like a wolf holding a book in its jaws or an imp wearing the feathered hat you just handed it. Very cute details. ------------------ Some small negatives: -The game needs some polish in the bugs/text categories, but nothing too dire - I ran into a silly thing where the final tutorial enemy can be orb'd if you do it fast enough but it doesn't actually give you an orb while still consuming the capture crystal. Obviously this is an edge case that doesn't happen after the tutorial. Some text could be tightened on some cards, with the wording being made more clear/consistent, but again, this is a small nitpick (for example, Critical Charge reads "Unequip the Weapon equipment from yourself" and I feel that it would sound better as "Unequip the equiped Weapon" or "Unequip your equipped Weapon"). The artefact unlock shop in the tavern has the artefacts render as very tiny icons, which seems incorrect, and the orb unlock shop doesn't render the orbs on the right hand side unless you hover over the space where they should be and then it just renders the card they represent. Again, I want to stress that these are very small things that can be and probably will be dealt with by the devs in the coming weeks/months and in no way impact gameplay. ------------------ I think the game is extremely charming, especially in the art department and the ideas it has mechanically, and seeing it get buried in discoverability is a real shame. It isn't that hard - all my losses were from either pushing myself too hard into always taking event rooms or not paying attention to conditional wagers I had chosen - but you do have options to turn it up and get even better rewards for the increased difficulty. Hoping it gets some attention in the coming weeks. If you do decide to check it out I would highly recommend the tutorials the game offers, they do not take much time at all and explain the game's systems quite well.
Roguelike deckbuilder + replayability + unlocks = Gamble on each level if you can meet the objective and earn more chips. Use chips to unlock and buy items. Explore random events and create new orbs. It's a style of game that I've never played before. The word "Gamble" was the deciding factor that made me give it a chance, and I can say that it made the game unique and much more enjoyable. The game encourages you to think about your actions before doing your moves, creating an addictive and engaging dynamic. It's not just a mechanical thing. Good graphics, great visual effects, good sound effects, nice background music, excellent gameplay and great game progression. Great experience so far. I have nothing to complain about - this game deserves a 10/10 rating.
A very unique and creative take on deckbuilders.
I was ready to write a brutal review and request a refund when I purchased this. However, the game is addicting, has a nice variety of orbs/gambles/characters, amazing replay value, and was well executed. This is all contingent upon extensive content being released. The game's upgrades can be completed very quickly leaving almost no content left to explore. I will keep my review positive assuming the following will follow: - increase in levels for each faction with much more unlocks offered - more orbs, characters, pets, upgrades in the inn - larger variety of events/enemies/bosses If an extreme amount of content is added that can be unlocked through various runs, this game will go from good to incredible!
Really solid entry in the deckbuilder genre, a hidden gem for sure.
fun game but it was pretty buggy
This is a very unique deckbuilder and I was surprised at how dynamic the gameplay is. There are so many things going on (in the best way possible) but at the same time everything feels familiar and accessible. Being addicted to bullet heaven survivors-likes for the last few months and having not touched a deckbuilder in a while I was worried that the game would be too slow and that the mechanics would be dragging - but it was the complete opposite. You're constantly getting a rush of endorphins from pulling off combos with your orbs (cards), from opening loot and of course, the gambling. You're gonna be gambling as part of strategy in this game both during fights and during breaks and it just adds another layer of satisfaction to the gameplay. Art style is charming. Music compliments everything happening in the game. There's even some lovely voice acting here and there. Very impressive and unique entry into the genre. Gameplay - https://youtu.be/02lx8DoeyMQ
