Galaxy Squad is what happens when someone watched FireFly, played some XCOM and wanted to cross it with FTL but had no idea about game design. It's a mish-mash of a lot of ideas, none which really work together and all of them with a substandard quality. The rogue-like approach is great until you realize that there's a very limited amount of items, enemies and events to find. The promise of the game is great, the writing is atrocious, and the storylines don't even conclude after the final battle. And yet, it's a fascinating game design bit, especially coming from a single developer. Grab it on a sale, spend a few hours saving or selling out the galaxy, then get back to XCOM.
poor mans xcom. the overworld map is inspired by ftl and the fights are inspired by xcom. here you are running away from the red line or you'll get really hard fights. you'll run into stations to acquire gear/ship stuff/new people/quests also you can find planet's, ships, and other events. you'll find items at these places or get into fights and no there are no ship battles like ftl. your ship can be upgraded but there isn't really much to it outside the combat upgrades. combat is done like xcom. you get 2 actions but if you attack or reload (without the upgrade) these will take both actions...well unless you use them as your 2nd action. you can have a squad of up to 5 with a choice of 6 classes (3 are unlockables) and most things from xcom are here nads, healing, defib, overwatch, cover and missing a 100% hit rate attack to a dodge. if you're not into roguelite games maybe pass on this as they expect you to fail a few times before you can unlock the random chance of beater stuff popping up in a run. it's good for only 1+ people working on it and this is great for a indie game. if you like xcom and can handle the graphics and rogeliteness of the game then maybe give this a shot.
the famous 75% that miss 3 time out of 4. No thank you!
PROS: Imagine Chimera Squad/Casual Simple rogue like Xcom and FTL made for tablet pc emulator, but good enough to play on pc. This developer, single dude, is talented. I'd be proud of this if I developed it by myself. Don't expect the scale of a large game, but for what it is, it is good at. Also, the cinematic sequences in this game is impressive in the camera angles he uses and how he animated the characters. Essentially, turn based tactics on a smaller map with random loot spawns on timers that you provide, gear, credits, or a one time use on that map super gun etc. Each map is loaded randomly with enemy type and number. You are slowly being pursued by a force marked with a red line allowing you the free will to go explore, do side quests, visit planets or stations etc while each move progresses the red line. You can go in the red line but you probably wont make it out. The battles feel fairly fair, though I missed many 100% chance to hit due to dodge from enemy. The main issue with unbalance seems to be if you go behind the red line chasing you. You can hire, upgrade and equipt your soldiers that you find in various sectors as you wish. You can even upgrade your ship to perform roles in both battles and space missions or even allow you to train or craft gear. Really, its worth the price this guy is asking and I can already tell its going to provide replay value when I am looking for something like Xcom to fill the gap when Xcom has made me angry haha. CONS: Some maps are repetitive in layout but not enemies or spawns, and not quest maps. Quest maps are unique. THOUGHTS: COULD develop this even more. But its worth the price as is and is something to do casually a few missions at a time..
Clunky and unfinished. If this is the finished product, it's more of a beta than an actual, complete, game.
Fun game, worth the discount.
It's XCom lite, with a map like FTL. Instead of XCom's base building, you build parts onto your ship. None of the crew management of FTL; just flying around the map and staying ahead of "them."
This game just sucks. I wanted to like it, but it's just so bare-bones at what it does. I'd rather play an official XCOM game, or FTL, not this abomination. Frankly, I think this game had potential to be awesome, but the minimalist design does not work for me, and I think the game needed more time in the oven. Halfway through, I just wanted the playthrough to end, and when finished, I couldn't bring myself to start another.
fun game, really short
