Always have wanted a game that modeled space and planet warfare level stuff happening simultaneous. This goes into the amount of detail that I like. It can be a bit daunting due to the complexity but is worth it when you figure out how to perform basic functions and then watch how everything unfolds. It greatly helps that you can pause or slow the game down to your liking. Saving at any point is also a good thing. The developers are very good at interacting with the community. They are always respectful and many times have implemented features/changes from the player base that enhance gameplay in several of their titles. Wishing you fellers the best of luck.
I've obviously not played enough to write a review based on a complete testing of the game. Nevertheless, given the lack of advice or even description on Steam or elsewhere I feel it might be helpful for anyone wondering whether or not to buy this game. This game is the only game I know which adresses both space, different solar systems and planet surfaces where you deploy facilities (factories) and units (eg infantyr, artillery, etc). In a way, it's like Shadow Empire meets Distant Worlds. Of course planet management is a lot more simple than a game fully dedicated to that aspect, but nevertheless resource and population management need attention. There are roads in between complexes, railroads even. Supply on land can be enhanced with supply depots. When conquering a planet you have to outcome its space defense and then land with air/land units and conquer the planet at surface level. Put in a resource management system quite unlike other 4X games (it's more a grand strategy/wargame IMO) and you have the ingredients for a great game. But I make some reservations. The learning curve is *steep*. The UI is functional and is not the main problem, although it probably could be better. With this kind of game UI is dated/convoluted more often than not, so it's ok, at least by my standards. The real problem is that, although the tutorials show in detail some aspects of the UI and mechanisms of the game, some other stuff is completely left to the player to discover, first and foremost resource management. You start first with a lot of supplies but not much production, esp. power plants. Guess what happens after a while ? You can very well end in a deadlock : no resources, no facilities building, no facilities, no resources etc. Lack of tutorial on how to deal with resource production does not help. Up to now I don't know what a supply depot really does. I'm directed towards Supreme Ruler wiki, a game I've never played. But despite all this frustration due to trail and error and lack of documentation, I keep going back to the game. Even as I quit a game because it's all gone wrong and I'm frustrated, I'm back one hour later with another play to test a different approach. So if you're interested by strategy game, that the "both planet/space" concept appeals to you and that you like Shadow Empire (or obviously Supreme Ruler), it's definitely a game to try. I don't garantee you'll love it, but It definitely has hooked me and this doesn't happen often.
A very deep game. Takes everything in the previous SR games and adds three levels of strategy - galactic, systemwide and a ground battle level. The game itself is a little opaque but well worth the effort to get into to - so much opportunity for storybuilding and renaming units and planets and so on(something I appreciate). The Enlightenment version also has a campaign of its own, which is a nice way of guiding a player through a story rather than leaving you to your own devices fully. I would recommend for anyone into deep strategy games, and definitely for anyone who enjoys other SR games.
Really fun concept, really enjoy it up until it crashes, then crashes again. Its like the game has reached its limit at the same point. I have gone through the threads, tried adjusting the game scale, and the in game settings. From reading the forums it seems like there was only one fix to constant crashing issue, double the normal 16 gb of RAM to 32, otherwise it seems like the method is to blame hardware or software (there is no war in Ba Sing Se lol). I tried on two computers both capable of handling 3d modeling, texturing and unreal engine. If later down the road I give this another try and can make it through a decent amount of play I will change this. The same goes for the original galactic ruler. Right not I get right to where I feel I am building something to be proud of then crash after crash. I also tried taking it slow and not attacking anyone. It eventually crashed. I have noticed the game crashes when you try to do things your not suppose to, I wonder if the AI is doing the same and crashing the game. Just a thought. There are also sudden and noticeable lag spike when the game changes music, cant remember if its the same song our not. I was able to get farther when alt tabbed looking at the RAM usage, which never left 57%, I had to disable a lot of background applications to achieve this. So for some reason when the game is not solely running it can handle situations it couldn't handle before. I will give it some more teasing to see if I can get it running, if I do I will be back, if not I will hope to the future. Great concept, add more resource types and units though. ;)
;-;
Now, I had to sadly change my review for this game for one simple reason... This game isn't finished, not the original GR version, nor this one "DLC"... The AI is simply attrocious, as it is the very same AI from the supreme ruler series (which works kinda just fine in that series) slaped on top of a 3 layer inter-stellar board. Lovely idea, yes, but DAMN, badly implemented. Lets be real here, this game has everything I looked for in a space game, it allows you to essentially do everything from building your infrastructure from the ground up, right up untill you reach self suficiency, and even simulates the power scalling from maxxing out all the natural resources extraction from your planet until your required industry to keep your empire simply afloat is just begging for off-world resources... From this, all the way to loading up an 8 inch towed arty (produced by this same industry) battery into your space port, having a massive transport fleet show up to load it, then ferry it all to a planet in a completelly different solar system in the other side of the galaxy to unload it and take it to a literally trench-line to hammer the last remnants of some forgotten species that is in the last legs of being completelly wiped out from the galaxy by your relentless galactic purging... Needless to say, I am extremelly disapointed, but I kinda understand it, it's an ambitious project, and as it stands, it is not done yet, but it has managed to become JUST QUITE ENOUGH to prove us that yes... IT IS POSSIBLE. I just hope the devs will come back from their "zombie fever" in the supreme ruler series and actually work on this one a bit more, fix the broken AI (poor thing... It doesn't even know that guns need ammo to shoot...), fix the colony system and then, only then, this game will remotelly resemble what it should be... What I hope it will be... For now, I would not advise buying it. TL;DR: Don't buy it now, it is unfinished, and consider this: the achievement for landing a unit into the first challenge of the game (pirate planet) has been achieved by <10% of the players.
Really enjoying this game even though it still needs some work from the developers. I am enjoying the game play style and the depth. There is quite a steep learning curve and lots of "hidden" detail to master but it is worth the effort. Plenty of help available on the forums and Discord.
