This game is made specifically for psychology lovers. To fully engage and appreciate it, you should be familiar with Freud's work and key concepts in psychoanalysis. If you're new to these ideas or need to refresh your memory, the game includes a book with detailed instructions to guide you, though it may take some time to read all the information. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this game if you enjoy standard point-and-click adventures that involve exploring various locations, collecting items, and solving puzzles. Instead, this game focuses on dialogue and the exploration of patient's traumas, helping you understand their neuroses through their behaviors, stories, and dreams.
not good. feels very undercooked.
I honestly regret buying this. I struggled to finish it. It's boring and confusing and sorta bland.
If you think Freud’s Bones might be inaccessible because you are not well-versed in psychoanalysis, that is not really the problem. I studied Freud and Jung for years. My issue with the game is not that it asks too much of the player, but that it often asks too little of its own material.
The idea
I can see the intention behind it. There is a genuine attempt to move beyond the usual pop-cultural caricatures of psychoanalysis, sexuality and the unconscious. The game also tries to bring those ideas into contact with more contemporary anxieties and issues, and to turn psychoanalytic language into something playable rather than merely decorative. That ambition is interesting. At times, it even works.
Untapped Potential
What struck me most was the potential within the simulator itself: the possibility of letting the player choose what to interpret and how to approach another human being. The game could have pushed much further into the tension between a medicalizing approach and a humanizing one, between adhering to a school of thought and actually listening to the patient as a person. That would have made the clinical dimension more ethically and intellectually alive.
Writing and Mechanics
Instead, the strategy system feels underdeveloped. It adds structure, but not depth. More importantly, it does not seem to truly investigate the central question the game is implicitly asking: what does it mean to turn suffering into a case, a theory, a diagnosis, or a method? The writing gestures toward depth, but often resolves its material too quickly. Psychoanalytic ideas are invoked with seriousness, then reduced into simplified mechanics and obvious associations.
Low Readability
The most damaging issue, however, is readability. The font choice is not a simple flaw. It is a structural one. When the central activity is reading, interpreting, and choosing carefully, poor legibility directly interferes with the experience. The lack of accessibility options only makes this worse.
Conclusion
I respect the ambition of Freud’s Bones, and I understand why many people responded positively to it. But for me, the final result feels too rushed and simplified to carry the weight of what it wants to address.
Buona l'idea ma a tratti è troppo noioso.
