Pros
+Up to 4 player split-screen +More than enough game modes +Competent bots +Smooth performance +Great visuals
Cons
-Weird vehicle handling -Not enough weapon variety
Gameplay Analysis
Monster League is a kart racing game that features vehicular combat. It features six game modes to play with up to eight people online or up to 4 people on the same machine through split-screen gameplay. I commend the developers for the inclusion of the good old fashioned split-screen play, something that is getting rarer and rarer, and adding competent bots that in my experience offers a good challenge especially if you're playing split-screen despite the clear focus on online multiplayer. There are six game modes to play. Race, where you race around in a selection of 5 beautiful halloween themed maps while using weapons and turbos to your advantage. a Rocket League type of game mode Ball and its slight variation Hockey, where 2 opposing teams score goals against each other. The other three are Battleground where you all fight in an arena gaining points until the timer ends. Golden Egg where its the opposite of Tag; The 'it' carries the Basilisk and gains points while everybody chases the 'it' to get the basilisk. and Capture the Frog which is their version of Capture the Flag. The latter five game modes have their own 2-3 roster of maps to choose from. Monster League features vehicular combat where weapons are acquired randomly through boxes scattered around the map, getting a second box while having an existing weapon will upgrade it to level 2, making it more powerful. Turbo boost canisters that fills up your boost reserve to be used anytime are also scattered around the map. Although there are a number of weapons to choose from, I felt that it isn't varied enough, some are too overpowered and some are just hard to use if not useless. There are also different monster characters to choose from each with their own stats and personalities. 'Race' gets boring when you are way first or are left behind. I hope there are abilities to make you catch up if you're too far behind or leave more lingering traps if you're the first. You also have no indicator or notification when you've hit someone in racing and who's player it is, a minor but important feature that would add a lot of fun factor to the game mode, as they already have this feature in another mode. I would even say go extra and add rivals/revenge to players that is continuously wrecking you. The vehicle handling is weird, there is some semblance of realism in it that makes it hard to control and very unpredictable, you will frequently hit walls, obstacles, and stop to a halt because of a very small maneuvering mistake getting out of control.
Technical Analysis
Monster League runs smoothly on my machine with everything on max detail(i7-8700k, GTX 1080, 16GB RAM) and it is absolutely gorgeous looking. The maps, abilities, characters. They got the halloween/monster themed art style very well. The soundtrack is fitting and gives the game a trick or treat vibe. It supports even 21:9 screens although unfortunately It doesn't support my 32:9 aspect ratio. I've never encountered bugs or glitches except for the minor clipping issues. The bots are very competent and it makes the game playable on solo, I liked that there are options to play with bots on all the game modes available.
Value
With the added split-screen play along with a bunch of game modes and online play, Monster League is like multiple games packed into one good valued deal. You are getting more than what you pay for even right now, and more future content like maps, game modes, characters are to be added because the game is still in early access, This is a game worthy of our support and has the potential to become PC's own Mario Kart.
Conclusion
Monster League is a solid early access game overloaded with nostalgia; A halloween/monster themed kart racing game that nails the fundamentals of the genre very well. Growing up I loved Kart Racing games such as Mario Kart, Crash Team Racing, and Toy Story Racer, and if you're a fan of those games, Monster League is the game to look for on Steam. As a massive fan of horror, I was very excited when I heard of this game. Having purchased it, I was not disappointed! It’s a very fun Mario Kart style racing game, but with cartoony horror characters and is fast becoming one of my all-time favourite games! The game is currently on Early Access, meaning it is still in development. Here’s a quick pros and cons list aimed mostly at the developers for their feedback: Graphically the game looks gorgeous! Racing maps are big, very detailed and the arenas look amazing. I would like to see some more horror/creepy things put into some levels though. For example, even though the Egyptian and ice levels are great, there is not much horror in them. It would be improved with addition of some kind of horror theme. Suggested additional maps could be things like graveyard, perhaps a map for each character (Vlad has Haunted castle, Cleo has Egyptian level and so Frank could have Mad Scientist’s Lab, Skeleton could have something like the Haunted Docks with ghost ships etc.) The main features I love are race and battle mode. I am really looking forward to seeing more maps in battle. I think the developers should concentrate on these 2 aspects of the game. Hockey is also a lot of fun but the other modes are good as an added extra but I don’t think are quite as enjoyable as battle or race. I can see that a drift mode is coming soon, but drifting is something I am not particularly interested in with this game. I really want to see the game expanding more with battle and race. The only real criticism with the game is the speed. The cars all seem to move quite slowly, which is ok for battle but seems a bit too slow for race. It is refreshing in some ways, as most racing games seem almost too fast but I do feel in race some people would miss the speed element. Perhaps include a feature which lets you change the CC of the cars allowing very fast racing or slow, pending player preference. Overall, a fantastic game already! Highly recommended and I can’t wait to see what is coming next. The Developers should give themselves a massive pat on the back. Fang-tastic!!!!
I am hoping for a switch port some day because for me it is more fun then mario kart but rivals crash team racing. Either way its a blast. and if you like Monsters and fun this is where it is at!
Can't recommend, since in Early Access since 2019, no new update, and still too low content for recommend on the current state : On the good point, nice graphics, game is well optimized and multiples game modes. But on the bad point, only 8 tracks on race mode, only 2-3 arena for each multiplayer mode, and only 6 characters, still too low content ...
Promising project. Would love to see it completed since CTR is nowhere to be seen on the PC.
Starting off, this game seem's to have been abandoned, so it very much is stuck in EA limbo. This game doesn't have much replay solo wise and is probably best played with friends as it has a lot of modes going on. I can't actually speak of the online since i couldn't get a match. It's hard to say if it should be recommended or not, I would say to pass on it if your not going to play it with friends. If you are then i can sort of recommend it. Play wise, it's a kart racer with a heavy focus on turbo chaining, without actual other player's it's hard to tell if race's play out well or fall into everyone doing a time trial with no real way for position's to change during a race. There are some oddities with the kart handling, particularly when colliding with other racer's or wall's. If you touch a wall in any way there's a good chance you will just rotate 90 degree's on the spot, get flung about or more commonly get stuck on the wall. Racer collision is rather bad, there's no "bump" when another racer collides with you. You generally lose control of your kart or get stuck on the other kart for a shot period, which is rather annoying. Item's are the standard fair, however they suffer from being hard to see when on the course or are in effect. There's a item which reverse's the control's of racer's but there's no indication it's in effect except a small model which appear towards the top of the screen, and i mean it's small. Other item's are just generally hard to see or distinguish on the course's themselves. Course's are alright, they kind of blend together and more fall into biome colour's. The theming is lost outside of the forest courses as they just become desert and frozen wasteland. Only issues are what appear's to be shortcut's are not shortcut's and reset point's are very unforgiving, the sort where if you make a jump and get hit after making it 90% of the way and fall into the pit you get reset back to the beginning of the jump, this is taken a little further with section's that have ground that can be driven on and actually connect's to the track but is out of bounds for some odd reason. Lastly the audio, character's have no SFX, each course biome has it's own song it shares with the other courses attached to it. Item's have SFX and item crate's have a constant loud breaking sound which wears thin rather fast.
This development team needs your support! I bought this game on a whim as something to play with my GF via splitscreen (a rarity these days on PC). We got addicted FAST. Nevermind that its not the full release yet. There are already plenty of features and maps to make this game feel like its worth the asking price. Hows the gameplay? Think of Mariokart before they ran out of ideas; but with modern graphics. Even if the game never gets completed, this is an absolute GEM for anyone interested in splitscreen on their PC. My only real suggestions to the team would be to add a larger roster of playable characters, and to give out free copies to notable game reviewers for better visibility on the market. This game deserves to be completed and is already great in its current state. Much love for Monster League!
