Formula Retro Racing is odd. It is designed like Arcade Racers of old and plays near perfectly with reactive suspension physics. However it feels as if its focus on Arcade Racers of the late 90's is also the reason as to why AI cars feel janky to race against as they jitter on their racing lines, swerve in front of you during an overtake or follow the racing line to a T without any deviation, Honestly after the first two races this jank made each race feel the same, as if I was playing dodge & weave rather than racing. Formula Retro Racing has a great visual identity with vibrant colours and tracks that feel great to race on just without the AI to trouble you or lessen the experience. I wouldn't recommend it at full price even though it is cheap thanks to this jank and lack of variety in Formula designed cars (there's only 1 with color changes) HOWEVER it is worth a play through of its Arcade, Grand Prix & practice modes when the games on sale.
Heya folks, Shaun here, and I'm back with another review! In this one, I'm covering an indie racing game called Formula Retro Racing by Repixel8. The game has been released on PC, Switch, Xbox and Playstation. Formula Retro Racing is an arcade style racing game that utilizes a low poly aesthetic for its graphics. It's heavily inspired by the low poly racing games of the early 90's but this game fully modernizes them with up to 4K visuals and modernized gameplay. The game features 4 major game modes including Arcade, Grand Prix, Eliminator and Free Practice. These modes tend to be pretty standard for all arcade style racing games so if you've played one before, you know what to expect. There are also 8 courses to race on and each has varying difficulty levels. I also want to mention that despite the fact that this game has mixed reviews on Steam as of writing this review, I don't really know why that is. From what I've been playing, the game is a really solid arcade style racing game. I encountered zero bugs during my time with it and driving feels smooth and responsive. The courses are well designed and fun to race one too. The only thing that I found kind of disappointing is the fact that the game doesn't yet support Steam Remote Play Together because I really wanted to play it with some online friends for a video. Overall, Formula Retro Racing is a solid homage to a bygone era of racing games and while it has mixed reviews on Steam, I feel that rating is a bit unfounded because what's available is solid and a lot of fun to play. It's also impressive that the game is largely a solo developed game too. If you're fond of arcade racing games and have a few bucks to spare, then I gladly recommend Formula Retro Racing, it's a fun game to relax with. I give the game an 8.5 out of 10. Until next time folks! My video review: https://www.tiktok.com/@dailygamebytes/video/7104750696351829294
Formula Retro Racing describes itself with its own name. Formula describes the cars, the game is retro in graphic style and the core gameplay which is an easy guess...racing. The cars handle well and the overall experience is very nostalgic and this game is a by the book replica of famed arcade racing games with refined low poly graphics. I think this game sought out to achieve a retro feeling arcadey racing game and achieved it on many levels. The game offers several ways to get into racing Arcade style, Grand Prix solar or Multiplayer or you can freely practice the courses if you wish. The game comes with 8 very solid and almost familiar tracks which is very reasonable for the price point. There are several tracks to unlock depending on the mode. I do wish there were more things to unlock in the game and I wouldn’t be disappointed to see more tracks or variations and options of the 8 that come with it. The graphic style is a low poly high res style which gives the game a great feel and contributes to the overall experience. Your car has a damage meter that will explode if you damage it too much, and even better when you do you get these great cut scenes that turn the screen to grayscale and slows, I almost expect the infamous “wasted” to pop up on screen but either way I enjoy it. The only thing I found annoying was that the volume setting did not affect the menu volume at all. Otherwise I found the experience to be light and quick, and easy to jump in and out of, or play extended period of time in the Grand Prix mode. Always chasing that gold! The game has no frills or deep customization but exudes charm from the low poly trees and tires, and retro hype arcade music to the simple color scheme choices, all that would strike a chord deep with fans of retro arcade racing games. I certainly think there is room to add things but I think as is, rings true to the retro name. The experience is nostalgic with a touch of refinement and polish since the 90’s and even offers 4-person local multiplayer! It's a gem! Joguei bastante com o meu irmão, recomendo muito pra quem curte algo mais ''casual'' pra se jogar com amigos e parentes.
So far, this game is very good. A nice little gem. Parameters by default are well set, most tracks are entertaining and have a good design.
You really get that Sega Virtua Racing vibe from the game. Fun early 90's style racer. Will be playing this more.
It has heart but so many things are wrong with it that it makes me wonder how come such talented people that clearly made this game out of love, would mess up this bad ? let us get one thing straight, this seems more based on the ps2 ''remake'' of VIRTUA RACING over the original arcade version, if u played the ps2 version, u will get the point on how the game controls, and how bad the understeer and oversteer are. The graphics are wonderful, the detail on how the car bounces and sways is superb. the music is both hit and miss, but one track in there is pure gold, got an amazing amiga/pc dos feel to it. but then.... the controls are way weird, the rack design lacks everything and seems not well made with turns and twists that defies reason. the cars are all the same, u think for a new game, at least some small changes, but nope, just color swapping. the FX are very low and has no impact. lack of character in the game. and then the worst part : AI : these drivers will get out of their way to ruin ur day, if one of them had the option to save their child from drowning or just cut u off, they will gladly sacrifice their child just to ram into you. The physics : even for an arcade racer, this is way too much, it is just so wrong. Collision : just makes no sense at all. Damage: ur car will explode so many times, the same happens with AI but then their car will magically appears in front of u, so what was the point ? end of the day, this is a fun game and worth it if on sale, but it is flawed and needs work and i mean a lot of work, but u can sense love was involved in this.
