Story:
Meet Jimbo, Herb, Arizona, Billy, Lucy and Frank!
Fishing Maniacs is a story about these crazy cooks, a group of friends and family that get dragged into a very unusual situation when Chef Pier opens a Fish restaurant in a pristine wilderness nearby. The pressures of consumerism and greed push this fragile ecosystem to it's utter limits.
When Chef Pier was in trouble and needed fish for his restaurant, he begged old man Jambalaya to sell him some. But Jimbo couldn't catch enough fish, so he had to call his drunkard friend Herbert.
But it still wasn't enough, so Herb had to call his old buddy Dr. Arizona Jones.
And then Ari had to call his old army friend Billy the Bomber.
Who then had to call his ex-girlfriend Lucy.
And she then had to call that "very special someone", Dr. Frank.
So how will this story unfold?
Find out what will happen with this crazy crew of fishing maniacs by the end of "Chapter 1" of this story!
«Fishing Maniacs»
I'm not usually a fan of tower defense games, but Fishing Maniacs appealed to me because of the theme, which I feel is generally underused in games. Otherwise, it's a fairly standard TD game, albeit with some twists: the fishermen ("towers") can move around the level, so their speed becomes an important factor, not just when spawning new ones, but also when covering missed fish with existing, fast-moving ones. Now, I'm not much of a real-time strategist, which is part of the reason why I don't play many TD games; simply put, this game, at the moment, is too hard for me. Among other things, I feel that the regenerating fish are seriously overpowered (as they aggro attacks from your fishermen, but very quickly go back to full health), and that the bigger fish have way too much HP. This made the start of many of the levels very difficult; if I was able to get through that, the latter parts of each level were straightforward. Basically, if you can't generate a lot of money early on, you're done. The theme, again, is the best part of the game for me; the mini-stories on each level are super fun, and you can sense that someone was really inspired when writing those. However, I also feel that the difficulty is kind of at odds with the relaxing, casual theme and atmosphere, and I think that the game should go either one way, or the other. Otherwise, the overall experience is pretty smooth; there's a few typos here and there, but that'll get polished out over time.
Fishing Maniacs (TD/RTS) is an abandoned Early Access 2D mobile app-like Tower Defense game with RTS like elements (you can move the towers around a little, slowly). The game is themed around fishing and your towers are country fishermen (who apparently destroy fish instead of catching them as they swim down the tower defense lanes). The fish amusingly have hitpoints... it looks a lot like this was originally flipped from a generic Tower Defense Unity template and reskinned. The game was abandoned roughly one month after launch and hasn't been updated in 5 years. It blew past the developers commitment to complete the game without any notification or admission of failure from the developer. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. This looks and feels like a mobile app, but it doesn't seem to have made it to the app stores. It's unclear why this was put on Steam instead of the app stores it seems to have been designed for. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes "Fishing Maniacs (TD/RTS)" might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected in the general public reception. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. That's right, only 3. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in the game is to be expected. Gamers just didn't take this low quality game seriously, and for good reason. Unethically, the developer sold keys to this abandoned Early Access game into cheap, nasty game bundles, where they knew it would be advertised and sold as a complete game. This seems to have been done in an attempt to mislead gamers into buying a knowingly faulty, defective and incomplete product. When a developer does this for a game they have zero practical intention of completing, this is essentially a scam, an intention to get paid for a broken/unfinished product. Often this is done as an exit strategy, as the developer takes the money and runs. No refunds have been given, the developer kept all the money they took from gamers. Fishing Maniacs (TD/RTS) is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer and/or their associates (as outlined above), this is impossible to recommend.
After putting 10 hours into the game here are my thoughts. First off, I want to say that I am NOT a fan of tower defense games. I find them to be rather dull most times, however as a content creator I am willing to give all games a chance, especially when there's a twist to the genre in question. Fishing Maniacs seems like a typical tower defense at first: you buy a tower, place it, and eventually upgrade it. The goal is to defeat the waves of creeps (in this game, schools of fish) before they wipe out your hearts/life points. What Fishing Maniacs does different is allows you to MOVE the towers. Your towers are fishermen, hunters and the like. You can place them, but they can chase down the offending waves of fish. This makes the gameplay more dynamic than your typical TD. Because of this, the game does have a greater entertainment value to people who may not like TD games, while giving TD enthusiasts something new to have fun with. The music is rather peaceful, which helps. What the game does wrong? First off the horrible constant sounds of the towers shooting. Certain upgrades are LOUD, and without turning down the sound effect volume you eventually get the constant sound of bullets, zaps, hisses, explosions and the like. It can become overwhelming and annoying. Also, despite the way the developer tries to tell you in later stages that certain towers can be useful, many versions of towers or entire towers become worthless quickly. An example is Jimbo, the starter. Despite his pickaxe and chainsaw upgrades he becomes totally worthless very quickly. And even though in a later stage you are told that Jimbo with a chainsaw is the tower of choice, he does zero damage. The math in the game is also horribly done. A starter fish takes two hits from Jimbo to be killed, who is attack power 1. 1 + 1 = 2 right? Well the next tower Herb is attack power 3, but he still takes 2 hits to kill the same fish. 3 > 2 right? So then I take into account the next tower, Ari with attack power of 15. He STILL takes 2 hits to kill the same wimpy fish. So the attack power is meaningless in that regard. The only thing attack power seems to control is whether or not you can actually damage the fish, which is not well explained. Also too, there is a bridge item that is introduced as a required item; however it is made expensive to use. Finally, TD games -should- have a way to perfect every level somehow. So far, i can't see a way to do this in Fishing Maniacs. You are forced to take damage due to an overly limited economy. While the movement of some of the towers can compensate, there doesn't seem to be a way to achieve 100% on all stages (at least on normal modes, i don't expect it on hard modes). Overall, while I find the game entertaining with the cast of characters the towers represents and the mechanics, I feel the game needs a lot of rework. This feels like a very niche game, where TD fans will find enjoyment and general audiences will struggle with the game. The developer will need to address how the power in the game works and refine how the towers and waves work, especially if they plan on a Fishing Maniacs 2 like the game suggests. I am going to give it a recommend for these reasons -- the price and the overall theme of the game. The price of $ 0.99 USD means it is affordable and won't deter anyone from at least trying it out. The theme of the fisherman gives it a fresh twist on a genre that is a very stand-still-and-wait kind of game. Want to know more? Nice different view for tower defence
An interesting spin on Tower Defense. I have only played it in short bursts as the continual need (at least for me) to move the various fishermen can be quite wearing (in a good way). I know that I will keep coming back!
BOM JOGO , DIVERTIDO
