First Winter is short on content, scares, and story. I care much much less about content, but it definitely could use a less abstract/more cohesive story. And I typically scare quite easily, but this really didn't do it. I do very much appreciate the indie roots of this game, and the fact that one person made it in a few months. Kudos for that. The price-point is more than fair. Pros: +Very short game (30-45 minutes) that doesn't wear out its welcome +Nice little game to 100% with achievements +Fun enough little experimental indie horror game +Super cool ARG alt ending Cons: -What begins as something that could be mildly interesting just gets bogged down with a hazy story (this whole thing could be an intro for a more fleshed-out game) -The filtered/pixelated art style is neat, but I can't shake the notion that it just covers up bland artwork (to be clear I don't blame indie devs with shoestring budgets for doing this, but yeah) -The little jump scares really didn't do it for me -The puzzle sections were just underwhelming fetch quests I enjoyed my playthrough, but there are just too many areas of this title that are lacking for me to recommend friends to go out and buy it.

First Winter is the first, and currently the sole, release from indie publisher/developer Dan Sanderson. It's a short experience that focuses on both atmospheric horror and jump-scares, while divvying up its gameplay between walking simulator and puzzle solving. Gamers play as themselves, and you must traverse an ever-changing world to figure out what has happened abord a Soviet submarine that has been found just off the west coast of Los Angeles, California. Clocking in at just around 40 minutes in length, even after finishing both endings, First Winter provides an ample amount of atmosphere and jump-scares. The horrific ambiance is created by the use of a fantastic soundscape, along with fairly intense visual stimulation. The jump-scares themselves are absolutely never expected, making each one of them incredibly effective; none of them feel cheap or unnecessary, either. Needless to say, it's easy to find yourself on edge for the entire duration of the game. A big part of the game is psychological in nature as well, invoking fond memories of that infamous Silent Hills P.T. that we all cling so desparately to. Brace yourself for a heart-palpitating horror adventure. I personally abhor the use of faux-retro filters, in most cases they're generic and cheesy, but it somehow works in favor of this title without coming off tacky. It helps that the base graphics aren't totally plain, so it doesn't look or feel like the developer is trying to compensate or cover up the use of bad assets. Instead, this faux-retro filter takes an already decent looking game and transforms it into something that can only be imagined as a first-person horror title from the original Playstation era. The limited view range also drastically enhances the chilling atmosphere, as what you cannot see is always the most frightening part of any horror excursion. I'll forego saying much more in fear that I may accidentally ruin some part of this incredible title. The only thing that holds First Winter back is its very short duration, but it manages to make up for that by providing an experience that's filled to the brim with intensity for each minute of its life. Additionally, the second ending is fairly lackluster. However, First Winter is one of the best horror games that you can pick up for under $5, and it's right up there with other underdog gems such as IMSCARED. If you manage to grab it on sale, you're in for an even bigger treat. Here's to hoping that Dan Sanderson has some more tricks up his sleeve. This game gets a 10/10 for me simply for being the first game where I legitimately didn't want to turn around to see whatever was behind me. It's super rare for a game to creep me out that badly, but First Winter did just that and then some. Plus, there was a good amount of 80s nostalgia with the movie posters, music, and commodore 64 (!), which also is an instant thumbs up in my book. The visuals are really unique and the sound design is fantastic -- if you haven't played the original game, Pacific, I'd highly recommend checking that out as well. Overall, Dan Sanderson ended up making one of the best indie games I've played this year by far, and possibly one of my favorite horror games I've ever played.
Very decent pixelated horror game with great style and audio. If you're into pixelated spooky stuff, this is a good one, buy it!
An interesting game with a cool 80's aesthetic & nifty eerie sound design. Creaks and groans get me every time. The bad ending showed the result of an ever-present fear even post-Cold War, with sad ghosts, Truly a game within a game. And I fully credit a great YouTuber, ManlyBadassHero, for finding the solution to that very very clever "outside the box" good ending.
meu sonho era jogar esse game em live, mas por não ter modo janela, ficou impossível.
Really rad game. Only 50% through the game and been playing for about an hour, it's absolutely terrifying. Can't wait to finish the game through the end and possibly play it again. I literally have no idea what will happen next, and it is ♥♥♥♥-your-pants worthy. I wish I had been filming myself playing and screenrecording because it would have made one funny ass reactions video. Major kudos to the creator(s) and developers for making such a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome and terrifying indie horror game. Highly recommend.
Big thanks to Dan for fronting me the free Steam Key! I really appreciate that. Now, I gotta say, First Winter was a very dope game to play. It didn't take long for me to realize it was the (sequel I think?) to Pacific, which was cool to play as well. The atmosphere was on point, the puzzles weren't too diifficult at all, and the scares were nice. One thing I'm happy about is that Dan didn't put any threats in the game. Not because I was scared or anything, but because sometimes it best to just let the atmosphere do the talking and walking. I also like how there's more than ending, although I'm not really interested in finding any others (then again, maybe I will). Anyway, big-ups to Dan for a great game, and I'm looking forward to seeing what's next. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mit_tNXFClA
