As good as this game is, ideally i don't want to have 300 tabs of the ffxi wiki open just to get my boots on the ground. Why even play an mmo in the first place if you're practically asked to do that?
First off, playtime isn't accurate. Unlike FFXIV, XI doesn't count steam as a separate platform from just plain PC, so I was able to set up a separate instance of the launcher and have since racked up about a hundred hours as of time of writing, and had about 300 more on unofficial servers prior to. That out of the way, if you can avoid getting filtered by the POL launcher (frankly, while it *is* obtuse, it's difficulty is extremely overwrought and you can skip the hardest part if you already have an account for XIV) and the old MMO jank, what you're left with is plainly one of the best MMOs ever made. There's just so much charm and mystery and vastness to the world even 20 years after release, the buildcrafting potential is suffocatingly deep between the subjob system allowing for literally hundreds of possible class configurations and the gear system even before you factor in gear swapping, the expansion stories are mostly fantastic. It's been in a deep maintenance mode for a decade, but still gets small content drops and the recent resurgence could be a good sign. Like I said, one of the best MMOs ever made. f it clicks, you'll be deeply sad that basically no developer would even seriously consider doing some of the stuff they did at its scale in a post-WoW market.
Coming from XIV, Its very hard and I would recommend a smart phone or second monitor with Wiki-guides ready to go, currently I'm level 55?-60? (dont 100% remember, I'm back to XIV) Dont take me switching back as a bad say or slander on the game though... My time in XI, Every small thing from leveling to unlocking Palidan or traversing the world itself felt like a grander adventure that XIV really cant replicate. The challenge and gruelingness annoyed me at first but later became something I respected and level downs actually makes you respect the world enviorment and keeps you on your toes. How I made my gill, figuring out auction house. will I ever return? perhaps after I get V and VI knocked out. I wouldn't mind a grand facelift remaster ( Maybe a dev cheap option like an HD2D to preserve the story mr. corperation Square Enix ) though... Only play if you have supreme patience and really are one who loves to walk through fine gaming history or are dedicated to beating all main lines. It has a solid very good from me.
"YOU LOSE. GOOD DAY, SIR" You know the difference between Retail WoW and Classic? Well, it's the same gap between WoW Classic and FFXI. You die, you lose XP. Deal with it.
one of the longest runnning mmorpgs of all time (atleast top 10 i think) and quite possibly one of the best mmorpg experiences available as of 05/2026. i've spent years playing on unofficial servers but the retail experience is amazing, even better imo. just watched a video today that the devs are surprised at how the playerbase has been keeping steady in this era and they are working on plans for even more future updates. soon they will expand the f2p to not be limited by time i am quite curious and looking forward to how they do that. there is no better time than now to get in and experience the game and story of FFXI especially when the bundle is on sale
It's a bit difficult to really get into the game, however, it's really rewarding when you get going (assuming you're not afraid of menus). The Asura server is also surprisingly active considering the age of this game! Though I haven't tried playing with a party yet, mostly solo'd with Trusts.
Great game, always new content coming out
its a classic with all of the jank of its time, strongly suggest you playing with a friend or a guide.
They expect me to pay a monthly sub for that crap? I've seen GameForge games better than this piece of trash!
