Final Fantasy X HD Remaster - Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Final Fantasy 10 is a classic, and was quite revolutionary when it had first released, particularly due to its cutscene fidelity, but also because it was the first Final Fantasy game to feature a fully 3D world and lots of voice-lines. However, this remaster version comes with some bugs and dysfunction that should have been patched long ago, as well as a lot of tedium in the gameplay that simply doesn’t fly with me. Pros: + Great story. It is up there with, but not better than that of 7 and 9. It is about faith, spirit, vices, neglect, determination, grief and forgiveness + Memorable and endearing characters. Some even appearing in different game series and franchises via collaborations, albeit Tidus being annoying and cringey for the most part + Brilliant art direction, color palette, and overall design by legendary Tetsuya Nomura + Great soundtrack. This version includes both original and arranged + Menus, gameplay combat and visuals are a big improvement over the older titles in the franchise + The turn-based combat became more streamlined, fun and engaging, in addition to using inspiration from Pokemon. And special shoutout to the great decision to have us trade party members and attack in the same turn + Traded tedious overworld for linear experience Cons: - The game will frequently both crash and show green-screen cutscenes even on high-end hardware, unless you install the free 3rd party 4GB memory patch - Sexualizes a 15 year old - Voice acting is mostly poor - Default max volume is EXTREMELY LOUD - 30 fps lock - Fixed camera at all times - Can’t skip cutscenes you’ve already watched after reload - Lots of tedium, tanky final bosses and forced grinding/crafting for late game takes hours and turns me off from the game - They either forgot to, or gave up on, enhancing the voice lines in the end game - Lots of complicated puzzles Mixed: ~ Includes divisive optional gameplay enhancements, such as speed-up time, instant full HP heal, etc. Some regard this as helpful to ease the old-school combat mechanics and world design that can be seen as artificial padding or needlessly difficult, where others see it as cheap and insulting to the original intended design In conclusion, it definitely has the best gameplay of all the classic turn-based FF games. However, the late game tedium, mandatory grinding, and one-track specific ways you must use to beat the final bosses are dated and exhausting in this particular genre. Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster - Overall Rating: 2 out of 5 Final Fantasy 10-2 is the first direct sequel standalone game of the franchise, made and sold in response to overwhelmingly positive reception to Final Fantasy 10 and an added cutscene. Pros: + Brilliant art direction, color palette, and overall design by legendary Tetsuya Nomura + Decent soundtrack + Menus, gameplay combat and visuals are a big improvement over the older titles in the franchise + Menus, gameplay combat and visuals are a big improvement over the older titles in the franchise + Can skip some cutscenes you've already seen, albeit not all Cons: - The game will frequently both crash and show green-screen cutscenes even on high-end hardware, unless you install the free 3rd party 4GB memory patch. However, X-2 will frequently crash even with the patch. It is not playable. - Sexualizes a 15 year old - Default max volume is EXTREMELY LOUD - 30 fps lock - Fixed camera at all times - Very feminine and centered around girl power - Writing is questionable and can be cringey Mixed: ~ Includes divisive optional gameplay enhancements, such as speed-up time, instant full HP heal, etc. Some regard this as helpful to ease the old-school combat mechanics and world design that can be seen as artificial padding or needlessly difficult, where others see it as cheap and insulting to the original intended design ~ Has unperfected real-time and turn-based hybrid combat In conclusion, if you're going to play FFX and FFX-2, stick with the original versions. I cannot recommend this remaster version, due to both games having so many technical problems both with or without the 3rd party patch. Though FFX is still a must play at least once. Can't say the same for FFX-2 due to it continuously crashing, however something tells me I wouldn't mind not spending time on it. A fun port of the ps2 originals, allowing new players to experience the story. Wish the character animations didn't get worse though.
