Decent enough action rogue-like, but not terribly difficult, and unless I'm missing something, extremely easy to beat. I could be mistaken, as I wasn't paying much attention to the stage progression really, but there's really only 8 levels to the game, and the last level is just a final boss fight. There are also a couple of very annoying problems with the verticle hit box for the player character, and it is possible to get stuck by one pixel on a corner of a block while you're trying to manuever away from a monster or shot, which is really annoying. Not permenantly stuck mind you. It really isn't fair to compare this to Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, but they are essentially the same game. If you come into this expecting BoI:R level production values and cotent then you're going to leave disappointed, but if you want a simple game that's basically the same experience, gameplay wise as BoI:R, then it's worth the price of admission. I would honestly use this game as a cheap example of the kind of gameplay you can expect from games like Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. As in, if you liked this game, you'll LOVE BoI:R, and so on. All in all, not a bad game. Decent enough. No game breaking bugs, but without the wit or absolutely insane depth of BoI:R. Good for wasting a couple hours mindlessly.
Faron's Fate had potential, and appears decent superficially, but has a huge flaw that is impossible to ignore. I had a reasonable amount of fun with it when I started, but I realized that it has very, very little replay value even before I managed to beat it. Instead of floor layouts and rooms being properly randomized, each "area"(dungeon, caves, core, 2 floors each) has four or five pre-made floor layouts that it pulls from, with the same rooms, shops, and everything. This means that after you play a few times, you'll have seen all Faron's Fate has to show you- with the exception of some of the items, but those aren't worth trudging back through the same rooms over and over again, hoping that one of the very few aspects of the game that ARE random will pop up in your favor. That alone should be enough to convince you to give this game a pass. Very disappointing.
I have a legitimate question for the developer of this game: why did you put so much effort into making a boring ripoff of an established giant in the market? Your game is Binding of Isacc but with all the 10's in that game turned down to a 3. The controls, the powerups, the aesthetic, the music/sound, everything. Faron's Fate is mediocre in every way. What kept you going? Making games is hard and time-consuming, and you had to have looked at this a few times and gone "wow, this offers nothing over the game I'm ripping off, and is genuinely a waste of time to play, much less spend hundreds of hours creating". If you can come up with a single original idea (which I doubt, having seen your monsters, dungeon rooms, items, traps, and overall mechanics lifted wholesale from BoI) please make another game. You're technically competent! Most developers cannot say as much. But this is a sham, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
Fun little rogue-lite with a lot borrowed from Binding of Isaac. Controls feel very tight and responsive, and visually the retro feel to it looks great. If you enjoy BoI or similar games, add this to your collection.
Review + Giveaway x5
NOTES: game keys provided by developer. I try to review only games I think I'll enjoy. Watching gameplay videos does not do justice to just how addictively fun this game is once you have it in your hands. Don't underestimate how long you might end up playing it for each time! While Faron's Fate can be enjoyed either for a few minutes or a few hours, I found myself itching to keep trying to get to the end "1 more time" ... If you haven't played a rogue-like before or the thought of starting over from scratch upon death makes you run for the hills like it once did for me, please give it a chance. Remember how replayable games were in the 90's and prior? Similar to those classics, there is so much variety on offer here that the short game time quickly becomes irrelevant. Gameplay is very focused on quick bursts of action across small randomized areas, the goal being to simply survive until the end. Story and all of that pizzaz is not present nor needed here. The music matches the retro-style graphics and becomes increasinly funky as you progress! The second reason I would recommend Faron's Fate (aside from the instant fun factor) is for the incredible loot system and sheer amount of variety that brings to the game. Weapons, spells and armours can be found everywhere and most of them will change the way you approach combat. It's like an on-the-fly class switching system. Do you want to keep your vampire armour with stylish red scarf and lifesteal effect or swap it for a wizard's garb or a heavy-but-slowing suit of armour that will turn you into a tank? Other pickups offer permanent bonuses, adding even more depth to your custom character class. I'm enclosing my favourite weapon in a spoiler tag here, due its awesomeness!
The green necro bone has a chance to turn your enemies into a skeleton minion on hit, who will fight for you and even follow you across areas!
5 game modes enhance the replayability further. Seeded mode generates the random areas based on the code/name/swear word you input. Now that's a blast from the past! I encountered 1 instance of a bug which caused the game to crash to desktop, but it happened within the first minute of a run and I know Winter Drake is developing a patch and is actively working on the game at the time of writing. Blergh... I can't really recommend it. I mean it's playable, there's some content and depth, but it really appears to be little more than a worse version of the Binding of Isaac. The graphics are rather ugly, the controls are meh, the fighting is pretty bad with the way your weapon just "floats" in front of you and all... If you're hungry for a bit more Binding of Isaac then maybe, otherwise I'd recommend you skip this one.
Needs a LOT more refinement. It's a nice time sink for the price. Perhaps some unlockables and extra characters to show a progression to the game? Definetly a nice change from long range combat with tears and throwing weapons from other games. Music is kind of ... Bad though.
Great roguelike with too many items to know what to do with! It's quick, fast-paced gameplay makes this the perfect casual game for when you just feel like blowing off some steam. The music is great at setting the pace, and really enjoyable to listen to. I definitely reccommend a controller, the default keyboard bindings were a bit counterintuitive to begin with. All in all, great game! I look forward to what comes in the future, and I definitely reccommend it to anyone who has any inkling to get it.
Faron’s Fate is a fun roguelike dungeon-crawler in which you explore randomly generated dungeons, fight all manner of fiendish foe and collect lots of stackable upgrades. The gameplay in Faron’s Fate is clearly inspired by The Binding of Isaac, with you entering rooms vanquishing enemies and collecting loot. At the end of each stage, you must defeat a big boss, then descend down even further into the dungeon. It’s a fun game, and thanks to the procedurally generated level design and over 170 powerful items and upgrades to find, every run is completely different. Those who have sampled the joys of The Binding of Isaac will find Faron’s Fate very familiar, but that’s no bad thing, there’s always room for more fun roguelike dungen-crawlers in the world!
Its a really simple little realtime Roguelike. Think The Binding of Isaac with pixels and a fantasy theme. AFAIK, there's no story beyond "KILL THE MONSTERS, LOOT THE DUNGEON". Start a game, youre in a random dungeon, with a random layout and random mobs and loot. Theres a seed number in the corner of the pause menu and a start option to enter a seed number, so if you find a layout you like, you can replay it. The game itself is fast paced, lots of enemies and projectiles zipping around. Enemy types vary, and they change between level types (as you go deeper the levels change look and mobs). Art is pixel style. Nothing too spectacular. You can tell what everything is you see though, although for some reason your weapon isnt actually held by your char but arcs out in a half circle around him. Musics pretty good, and the sound effects are what you'd expect from a game like this. The map is set up like the dungeon levels of the Legend of Zelda, each screen is a room with doors leading out. Some rooms require you to kill the mobs to proceed, some are dead ends. Some are stores where you can buy a random selection of items for gold or rarely permanent health loss. Eventually you will find a boss room, with a giant monster that you hae to kill. It usually drops a permanent health power up. In the room with the boss is a trapdoor. Go down that and youre in the next level. Rinse, repeat. There are *plenty* of cool random items and weapons. You have a weapon slot, and an item/magic slot. You can carry only one of each, and picking up an item or weapon drops the most recently carried one. There are also bombs and keys in their own slots. Items take mana to use, the amount of which is shown by a number in the corner of the item box. Controls are OK, but not great. Its easy to get hung up on dngeon objects and you get damaged on enemy collision, so its easy to accidentally bump into something since some enemies seem to have large collision boxes. Its not a game breaking issue, but I wish the controls were smoother. Controller support is fully implemented and decent, but only the keyboard is remappable (a big pet peeve of mine due to my disabled hand- I really appreciate the controller, but please make it mappable). Its simple, its fun for a run or two, runs can last anywhere from 26 seconds to hours depending on your reflexes and desire to clear every screen, and also the RNG not dumping a ton of tough mobs on the first screen you enter (why I had a 26 second run). My one big complaint is there is no save. In an arcade/permadeath-style game like this, I dont expect to be able to save to avoid dying but a "one-time emergency drop-out and pick it back up where you left off" save should be implemented. Most other games have one time saves, even arcades or Roguelikes. Thats a major issue, and should really be added. The game also seems to be lacking in permanent unlockables, so each run doesn't add to an overall sense of accomplishment. Unlockables such as new classes, better starting gear, more health on start and so forth add a lot to a permadeath game, and the fact that Faron's Fate doesn't have them kind of lowers it in my eyes. Overall, its a decent little game, but not great. $7 is an OK price, but I think $5 would be a bit more fair considering how simple the game is and the lack of emergency saves and unlockables. Its pretty fun though, one of those "kick back, and run frantically around a dungeon slaying monsters and looting" games.
