About
Faraway Islands is a top-down 2D story-driven survival game, set on procedurally generated islands you can travel between and explore. The game features classic survival mechanics like crafting based on combining, gathering resources and food, farming, hunting animals, increasing character skills, building shelter, and defending against enemies.
You play as a survivor of a passenger ship that sank in a wild storm. As you try to find a way home from these islands, you encounter new friends who will help you, and enemies giving you a hard time. (character visuals can be customized)
Creating items is done by combining or processing items in your inventory. These combinations are not shown to the player from the start, so you have to try new combinations. Some are recommended to you by story characters or written in quests.
You can build your own shelter to ensure your safety from predators and enemies. The game has several basic buildings to choose from and construct, and more are unlocked by increasing your skills.
All islands are procedurally generated, which means everything from their shape to the number of crabs and mushrooms is randomly chosen and then created by predefined rules. Not all resources are the same on every island, so you must explore and find what you need.
Wild animals are dangerous, and you should be cautious when moving around them. So beware that pack of tigers can kill you quite quickly. There are also human enemies that will attack every few days. You can prepare for these situations by crafting weapons and armor.

Read the effort put into the early access game description, take all those feelings about how much this developer does not give a sh*t and then the game is that much sh*t, nothing added to the basic survival and craft formula with even less reason given to explore and without 3d graphics. Shame could of been something that contended but under someone who has no faith in their own game unless others do what does anyone expect. RIP Greenlight, hopefully games with half a thought can get some light again. Video: https://youtu.be/KflRticY1P0 #RIPGreenlight
At least, to me this gas was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. No tutorial, complicate UI, Uncomfortable combining system and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ FRAME DROP while raining. You'd better to buy another game until the maker fix this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game.
Good 2D survival/crafting game.Controls well and has good mechanics.Fun to play.Main thing missing is content.Maybe some kind of back story as well as current story and things that hamper surviving would make it better. Things like animals or some mobs that you have to fight/avoid or just watch out for would add a lot. This could lead to more reason to have variety of weapons and a leveling up of weapons. This really is a fun game in early access which I totally forgot to mention....until now.Price is not very much at all now......with proper good additions current price will be a steal. Developer is dedicated and wanting feedback to help advance their game.....which is usually a good sign for a early access game in my experience. So overall I am not a professional game reviewer but I do know if I like playing a game or not and a few things I personally would like to see in a game,so I like playing Faraway Islands and recommend it to all. I see it getting better with a little love. Edit:3/05/2022- A complete story has been added along with lots of new content. It is a very fun casual story driven survival game that is worth more than the asking price in my opinion. Would recommend to anyone.
People forget this is still a work in progress, I see alot of potential and I look forward to further development
There's no music, the graphics are really basic, the English is bad, and there is barely any handholding - and you know what, I sorta don't care. All of the basics are there, the crafting is logical (so far), tools degrade, there is hunger and thirst. The combat with the slingshot is a little wonky, but the spear works just fine lol. It isn't the best game in the genre, not by a long shot, but I can honestly say I've played worse. Maybe this guy will make a much better game in the future, so I don't mind supporting him now. The negative reviews are all from 2017 and who knows, they might stand by those even today, so take a gamble or don't...
I am writing a new review for this game (old one still below) as I think it has changed enough to warrant this. This game is amazing. This game very bare bones yet still so good, it has everything a game could need (hunger, thirst, fatigue, combat, a bit of story, building, crafting) for a one developer game who started this as a project in high school, this is impressive, it puts to shame so many other survival crafting games, it has an impossible to describe X-factor. I always find myself coming back to this game after a long day of work, I continue to play it when I get the chance. Though it does have its glitches, the best part is the Dev cares, they may have fully released this game, and stopped development, but they still patch bugs, and answer community questions. I would love to see more on this game, and any other game this Dev might make. All the negative reviews before this one are citing the earliest version of the game. there is a tutorial, and all frame drops, and glitches mentioned have been patched out. I strongly recommend playing this game. Old Review: (I Love this game and I want to see it get updated again I'm very happy with the development of the game the only problem I had was that I had put time into 2 different islands and that progress broke and I had to start from scratch. Otherwise a great game and I do recommend)
игра не развивается. разрабы обещали русский язык но так и не сделали. игра заброшена.
This game is extremely laggy and lacks functionality. I would like a full refund of this game
Its ok need some work not worth $4 maybe $2 but thats the highis I wood go should be free thogh I mite get a refund idk I dont recommend it right now but maybe if they fix it up a bit and add more to it it mite be a little good game you can kill sometime with
Pretty cool game. Has all aspects from stranded/castaway-genre. Even a little character developing, this is unusual in such games. Crafting and inventory system is ok, not too bumpy or stucky. There are worse ones. To avoid that tiny little bugs getting in your way, save all several minutes, or every morning after sleeping. Sometimes you get stuck and then you can load the last save game. There are also tigers and native you have to fight, several islands to discover, lots of items and crafting receipts, which keeps you busy for quite a while. Also the grind effect is not too high. You need lots of resources, but there are plenty. Like the game.
