The foundation for the series. So many elements laid down for future titles, with arguably the best villain out of all the games. If you have enjoyed old-school CRPGs in the past or any piece of post-apocalyptic media for that matter and want to enjoy one of the best stories the genre has to offer, then please pick it up. It's extemely cheap when on sale. My only regret is that Dogmeat and the rest of my companions got ripped to shreds by supermutant miniguns at the Mariposa military base. Solid 8.5/10 ignoring the 90s jank and outdated graphics. "I'm sorry. You're a hero... and you have to leave"

Fallout is a classic that holds up remarkably well nearly 30 years later. A few things show their age - inventory management feels clunky, and more voice acting would go a long way - but if you can look past those minor annoyances, what you get is a well-structured, focused, and thoughtfully built world that lets you approach almost every situation in multiple ways. The villain is well thought-out, and his reasoning turns out to be disturbingly logical. The ending... all I can say is that it hit hard. It left a mark, and I still think about it. I wasn't expecting it to get that real at the end... [i]A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game[/i] might be the best subtitle a team has ever chosen: direct and honest about exactly what you're getting. Thankfully, it's a subtitle that fits - Fallout is still considered the benchmark of Western RPGs, and playing it makes that reputation feel earned. Fallout delivered in so many ways: the music gets under your skin, the turn-based combat scratches a very specific itch - and honestly, this was the game that taught me to love that combat style. The cherry on top? I used my grandfather's name for my character, finished the game, and only then discovered that Fallout 2 follows the story of the Vault Dweller's grandson.
