trying to play this game with a controller is like blowing your balls off with a railgun
This game will not let me use my XBox controller even though it lets me select it in the pre-load game settings screen. Once I get in game it defaults to keboard and mouse and will not let me choose a controller. Based solely on that have to say this game sucks majorly. Its 2024. Get controller support people!. I used to love Xtreme G on the N64 which was why I got this one. too bad.
Terrible port that doesn't work properly. Read reviews stating issues had been fixed, but nope. Cannot play the game as neither keyboard or controller responds in game. Shame as I enjoyed this and the first one on N64.
I had this game on the N64 as a kid. I loved the first game passionately. This one is the worst of the series. But it was on sale and I was curious if it was as bad as I remembered. It is. This game sure does love to bring you to a complete stop and point you in the wrong direction where you lose even more time getting the bike to turn around. No other game in the series does this. It was worth the small dose of rage nostalgia but I wish they would do any of the other 3 games.
A underrated gem released on the Nintendo 64.
Another unfortunate case of "I really don't want to give this game a negative review but". While not as sleek or polished as XGIII this game is still fun in it's own way. Sadly however there's been some questionable porting choices. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3280662467 You can rebind every action except steering controls which are permanently locked to the arrow keys. And at this point you have to wonder if you can already rebind keys why not let you all of them. I will gladly reverse my recommendation if there's an update that lets you rebind steering as well. These type of ports need to do better if they expect to bank on people's nostalgia.
I loved this game growing up, which is why this port breaks my heart. If you want the game so that you can play the game, then consider an emulator, or sailing the open seas first. The music is broken, won't loop, and some tracks have incorrect music in certain stages (unforgivable!) Controllers do not work in the menu portion, forcing you to use your keyboard (Just assume this means the game won't work on steam deck.) The racers don't even dance the way I remember they do when you win a circuit! Also, why the hell is drifting bound to Y? Maybe I'm an idiot for drifting while accelerating though, lol. The game itself plays just as well as I remember it, but It's just not a great port. I hope someday someone will put in the effort to remaster this game, because it's still really fun. I play this game still, but I'm genuinely mad when the game shows its crustier issues.
A ruined piece of art, but one with a giant hidden gem within the files
For years I keep thinking about this one strange demo game I played in the late nineties. It was hard to play and I couldn't even win a race, but it had this awesome soundtrack. I can't even say with certainty that it was Xtreme G, but Imagine my exitement finding this game was actually made and potentially been ported and available on Steam. Sadly my excitement disappeared fast after purchase, None of my controllers work, the keyboard controls are just plain weird and some parts of the game bug out like crazy making the game a pain to play. The problems are too numerous to note individually.
So, this port is a mess, why the positive review?
Well, it's very simple really. That soundtrack I remembered from over 20 years ago? Hidden in the files is not just the soundtrack of one game, but FIVE! For some reason the devs dumped the soundtracks of the entire series to this giant dumpster fire. Not just PC, but even console soundtracks are just sitting right there, ready to be added to your own media player. So Instead of wasting your time trying to get this crappy port to work, just spend the 3 bucks or so for the music. Hop in your car or another racing game that actually works, and enjoy the 3+ hours of 90's trance and Drum 'n' Bass bangers.
Brilliant blast thanks for porting this, It also includes the original sound tracks from all extreme g games so it's worth it for that alone, I recommend selecting XG3 for one of the greatest game/music combo's ever created. (files are all there if you want to use them elsewhere too) I play with xbox controller fine, just select it and which music tracks you want in the first menu (mini launcher) ps4 controller is there too. Then launch the game, If your controller does not work just task manager close program and re launch, check your inputs in the launcher then start again. (sometimes I have had to do this twice but always works after this). It's twitchy at first till you get used to it (from the Z max up you can hit the sound barrier in two corners so makes sense later} Remember to lean forward and back! Leaning back in corners will boost your speed so be ready! When you first start go for time trial, choose the Mooga and learn a few course's, there are a lot of variations and some are crazy (Glass Highway is amazing) some are technical and some are flat out, find a couple of fast ones where your not bouncing all the time and you will soon love it. The bikes are all different so If one is too fast try another, some are tanky, some are paper but this is old school no hand holding so no stats are shown, part of the content is learning the bikes. XG2 was partnered by Honda who made the Pantheon concept for the game along with much hype at the time, the bike can be accessed almost straight away but is too fast for new players so be warned!
low visual quality, no split-screen multiplayer, (bad port maybe?). Back then it used to be one of my favorite games- but this version is worse than it used to be, too bad.
