Decent vanilla story, good banter and good combat once you get stuck in. Ship movement is slick and refined, audio design is great. ... Why am I not recommending it, though? - Egregious RNG at endgame. They implemented a "lock these attributes" feature to help tamp it down on equipment, but there are so many options for attributes and ship passives that you'll spend weeks trying to minmax the build you want to try. All that minmaxing requires rare resources in large quantities to drown it in sheer buckets of dice rolling (as well as time: yeah it might only take a few seconds to get to each encounter and a couple minutes to complete them, but it all adds up), and getting access to the events that spawn those resources is also dependent on RNG. Also: said RNG is immune to save scumming, so no reloading your save in the vain hope of getting different outcomes. - Tedious endgame gameplay loop. The only real goals you have after the story are minmaxing builds (see above), achievement hunting (see below) or playing the dungeons at higher and higher difficulties. - Balance issues, especially at endgame. AI accuracy is dictated by game difficulty, dungeon difficulty is managed by cranking enemy health and damage to ludicrous levels. So, the only thing making the game "harder" is your ability to manage bullet sponges. Nothing says good game design like meta builds revolving around a gun that insta-kills enemies, abilities that give you chances of dealing area damage because your DPS isn't enough to chew through single targets quickly, mines (and gear) that increase damage taken to all things affected by them and shields that have an almost-automatic chance to ignore damage. - Secrets and puzzles are of wildly varying quality, and you may or may not end up having to rely on YouTube to 100% everything. - Dubious DLC quality. Wrath of the Ancients has a couple of BIG plot holes right off the bat that completely contradict established lore. Once you finish Titans, you'll have its specific NPCs regularly nagging you to play their encounters with no way to shut them up. - If you're one of those that doesn't like things on Unreal Engine 5, I hate to break it to you. I've found the game to run okay, though it does occasionally crash when there's a lot going on all at once. - Price of admission when it isn't on sale. $50 base and $15 per DLC is... a bit steep. Value proposition is a lot better if it is, though, and that's the only circumstance where I'd change my recommendation. Also, a gripe: various NPC ships aren't up for grabs. I know they've outright stated that capital ships are off the table (though they did kinda give you one as a space Winnebago in WotA), but I like the design of the various NPC ships more than I do most of the designs that are offered to the player. If there is a third installment of this series and the G&B heavy fighter or the light Freelancer fighter aren't up for player use, I'm gonna be incredibly disappointed.
Chorus made me get into space games and I was really hoping this one would live up to the hype.. But navigating these missions and trying to find "parts" or "objectives" or whatever is so unintuitive. The flying feels great, combat is cool, but everything else is painful. Really disappointed.
Outstanding combat-focused 6DOF Spaceship Action-RPG with light Space Sim trappings. Don't go into this expecting Elite or Star Citizen, it more closely resembles a cross of Freelancer, Decent and Diablo. Good meaty game, fun itemization and outstanding combat. The narrative and cutscenes are competent, unobtrusive but certainly not the game's strong point, but overall the story works well as the framework for the game. It also has a variety of more ARPG-style repeatable combat encounters with lightly procedural elements. As mentioned the draw is the combat - it's incredibly frenetic compared to traditional space sims and very much allows you to make heavy use of inertia to pull of some incredible maneuvers. Out of all the games I've played it's the closest to bringing the feeling of the Viper fights from the Battlestar Galactica remake. Each ship type is basically a class, with a unique perk and ultimate ability. "Devices" are a variety of cooldown-based abilities which compliment your traditional energy and ammunition based primary and secondary weapons. I recommend it for anyone who likes blasting ♥♥♥♥ with spaceships, it's kind of best-in-show for that.
Difficulty in this game is "you are outnumbered 30 to 1. Oh, you killed that wave of 30, well here is six more teleported to your immediate aft automatically, every time you mange to kill 3. Hahah 'Difficulty' " That is the extent of the depth of this game. Mid story, terrible encounter design and experience. Just over all trash. If you are looking for an enjoyable space-flight experience. This game is not worth a dime.
Refer to SamuraiCupcake's review. Meh. 6/10.
The first is way better. The first one was great because you could quickly make a new build and try it out in a quick run. This one seems to be about building up your one craft and loading the game when you die. This creates a huge problem when you enter an encounter that you cannot win. The load state will be at the beginning of the encounter, forcing you to repeat that one encounter over and over with your bad build. Boring and frustrating. I 100%ed the first one. This one I could only stand for an hour.
It's not that deep. Want a fun game where you fly a spaceship and engage in spaceship battles? Then this is a solid option.
it starts out promising with some reasonable context and story arc, but then they 'present' all this static picture 'animation'.. which is so cheap! they put in the most minimal effort because 'someone' thought they had to put SOME kind of story into it, which #1 pretty much completely lacked! it's as if the devs think exploring empty space and their combat was enough! but the thing is combat is pathetic! the mechanics of 'boost' is so limited it is next to useless (maybe better with upgrades?!).. some of the early fights are so overpowered you lose your shields in a couple of hits, and then your armour after a few more.. and looking for resources etc is just sooo tiring! honestly no idea why people would want to play this game.. for a GOOD space exploration game, get rebel galaxy!
