ridiculously overpriced ~2-hour (or 1 if you watch it on youtube) 3d puzzle platformer from the people behind my time at portia and its various ridiculously overpriced reskins. non-rebindable controls, a removed demo and lots of trial & error due to all the timing, stealth, lack of clarity and unresponsive controls. jumping is on a delay for some reason, feels weird. tutorial prompts can be missed easily if you keep moving. there's also a lot of pointless walking between puzzle levels. gameplay involves dodging robot sensors that aren't clearly visible (or they blind you completely by covering the whole screen in pink) and carrying cubes slowly and placing them into slots to open up the path forward. only one cube can be in the world, so if a path is opened and you grab another one for the next beacon or whatever, gotta be quick before the platform retracts. failure means back to the last checkpoint, which can also be set manually anywhere, on top of wherever the game puts one. that's only for puzzling though, progress isn't saved on exit. wasd to move, arrows also work. always jogging, no sprint, automatic slowdown near robots. space is jump, e is interact, q/r to fly up/down, q is also for asking the cube to pick you up, holding r creates a checkpoint, holding f is 'fallback' to the last checkpoint, and there's puzzle reset in the pause menu. mouse for the camera, lmb to throw, rmb does nothing. at some point hints become available with tab but they never worked for me. the game says they're powered by leaves but there's none in the actual puzzle sections and it didn't do anything when I was standing next to a pile outside a puzzle either. very helpful. holding q lets you move on to another puzzle for the time being but it's not a puzzle skip, unfortunately. looks and sounds nice, cutscenes are skippable, settings are decent and available anytime. separate volumes (master, cutscene, music, sfx, interface sfx), some languages, though spoken audio defaults to chinese and since the ui and the way too small subtitles were in english, I figured there's no english dub despite the store page's claims, but the gameplay on youtube proved me wrong. axis flips, mouse/controller sensitivity and vibration toggle, resolutions, windowed mode, overall graphics quality with various separate settings (depth of field, vegetation, shadows, v-sync, volumetric fog, tree quality, motion blur). 4 save slots to keep progress separate.
Pastel-toned graphics, an emotional storyline, and challenging puzzles offer a fun and engaging experience. However, the game unfortunately ends before you can fully immerse yourself in the gameplay and story.
Clever games curator review: 6.5/10. A very pretty 3D puzzle game. Puzzles are demanding in terms of reflexes, intellect, and observation. They mostly consist of avoiding cameras (stealth); while you can jump it’s not really a platformer. While there aren’t that many puzzles, each one is rather different and all depend on that aha moment when you realize what the trick is, ie none are obvious. Almost all feature stationary sentinel bots that have a 90‑degree field of view, and noise/thrown objects cause them to change that field of view. If you are seen, you instantly die. Aside from the first two levels that teach you the mechanics by example, the timing is very tight. You will find yourself planning out a sequence of moves and then repeating it several times in a row before you get it right. While this is potentially frustrating, the game features a single save slot that can be used at any point in time. Although I haven’t played many stealth games, so I may not be in a good position to judge, I found the puzzles to be pretty challenging. The rules for what causes sentinel bots to orient are just complex and arbitrary enough that I often forgot a crucial fact that was the difference between a level being solvable or not. And sometimes you’re stuck not because of the rules, but because of a subtle feature of the level, such as a pressure plate that moves a platform right in front of your face, but also a nearly invisible one far in the distance. Although there seems to be an in‑game hint system, there’s also plenty of YouTube walkthroughs if you get stuck. In between the puzzles, there is a series of cutscenes that tell a high‑drama storyline that is probably somewhat related to what’s going on in the puzzles but feels very disconnected. In retrospect, I could have skipped it. There’s also an extremely serene walking simulator‑esque area that you navigate to reach the entrance to each of the puzzles. The walking sim serves as a stress‑free break from puzzles, but I feel like it was a bit underutilized since there isn’t really anything to do other than look at the pastoral scenes, plus only takes up about 10% of gameplay time. If you look at the screenshots, you’ll see that the game is beautiful. Maybe not to everyone’s tastes, but I would give that aspect a 10 out of 10. The sound is also pretty good. It plays great with a controller, though it is lacking remapping functionality. In the end, I have very mixed feelings about this game. Some of the puzzles were quite clever and left me feeling the same, but many were an exercise in frustration where I just got a bit angry when I realized what I had been missing was just due to not looking at the right set of pixels on the screen. That is to say, I have felt often the puzzles were hard because I was lacking a crucial piece of information, not because the solution itself was so deep and mind‑bending. If you tolerate or even enjoy frustrating puzzle design, I think you should definitely give it a try. In the end, I’m glad I played it through to the end but I definitely was sorely tempted to rage quit and uninstall multiple times. Depending on what aspect of the game I’m thinking about I could easily give it a 5/10 or 8/10.
What clicked me was the visual. It looks beautiful scenery and has a calming atmosphere. Unfortunately, I found the story a bit hard to follow, though it seems emotional and maybe even sad. As for the puzzles, some felt like trial-and-error. A few of them rely on its mechanics system and frame perfect timing, which feels unfair rather than clever. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3531577980 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3531576972
The negative reviews are spot on: fantastic art design utterly wasted on puzzles that aren't hard because they offer a reasonable challenge, but because Maya's jump is so pitifully short for such massive gaps, but also the fact that the slightest twitch of the analog stick sends her careening in one direction, making it exceedingly difficult to not accidentally, for instance, run a step too far and right in range of one of the sentry bots, resetting the puzzle back to the start. This type of dodgy/janky movement would be fine if this were a pure puzzle game. Unfortunately, Ever Forward is the kind that requires timing and precision movement, and I have very little patience for crippled control, something that more or less was perfected for 3D games around three decades ago.
Ever Forward is a puzzle and adventure game. In short, and without spoilers, it's about a girl named Maya who is searching for her mother after she left her. The story begins there. The story is fairly good, and I enjoyed it. The music is also great. The puzzles are somewhat similar to Portal, but Portal is much more difficult. The puzzles were average, except for the last part of the story, which had one that was somewhat difficult. However, it depends on how difficult you perceive the puzzles to be. Overall, the game is enjoyable and worth trying, especially if you are a fan of puzzles and short stories. I also recommend buying it when it's on sale
Feels something like a student assignment, rather than a published game. Clunky controls and puzzles. Poor localisation. Story that's hard to follow or care for.
ChatGPT reviews are wrong, this is the prequel to Portal: Cube You play as little Caroline and her cube—I don't care I even added an em dash to make it factual
