This game deserves much more attention. Made with low budget by a single person it's one of those gems you have to discover. It explores interesting and relevant for our century topics, diggs deep into humanity's nature, history as it was and as what lies in the future. I don't want to spoil even the little bits of this well-crafted story, but if you're into sci-fi and mystery or like to explore thought-provoking topics which our civilization is very close to encounter - this VN will be an excellent read. In short - "novel" part of this visual novel is already enough to play it. As for the "visual" part...well, 3D surroundings and character models are hit-and-miss. Most of the time they look OK, but sometimes they look pretty clunky with characters standing close to the standard T pose. But on the other hand there are lots and lots of scenes and details and hundreds of diferent pictures. In the end it gives pretty accurate and detailed visual presentation which many bigger VNs are unable to achieve with standard "3 poses, 4 faces and static background" scheme. Music is also pretty good. It's not for everyone's taste, but I found myself loading saves just to find the scene when the action music kicks in and listening it for few loops. It reminds me of great times when I've played my 16 bits monster called SEGA with its signature yamaha synthesizer's sound. What's also great is that there are few "levels" for many tracks, the first one being the calmest, so when s**t really hits the fan you experience growing tention with music getting more and more energetic. There are also some spooky and atmospheric tracks as well. Sound is mostly absent. No voice acting and only few sfx, but for such small game and limited resources available to the developer that's not an issue at all. In the end - do not let the unconventional appearance of this VN and total absence of anime-neko-loli-schoolgirls fool you. This is a worthy game for few evenings, its plot is gripping, its sci-fi components are well-thought, its pacing is perfect, and even if there are some negative sides - overall it's a surprisingly great experience which's gonna leave you wanting for more...and there will be more! I'm definitely gonna wait for continuation and I really hope this VN's gonna get the recognition it deserves. And for the love of god - dear developer, tell me where can I get the OST)
Visual Novels come and go in the most extreme style possible, and during this last year, we’ve seen them all, however, rare were the occasions we laid eyes upon something like Event-D. Crafted with passion and extremely well directed, this game is nothing more, nothing less than a hidden gem for Sci-Fi fans, and everyone who can’t miss on a fantastic adventure. Developed and published by Freedintale Studio, Event-D it's the very first project from the studio founded by Manuel F. Cedeño, a 3D artist, getting his first game on Steam just a couple of weeks ago. A Sci-Fi Visual Novel depicting space exploration in an original and well produced adventure, one that will most certainly fascinate any fan of the genre. Humanity is finally doing it, colonizing Mars is no longer a dream, it’s a reality. A chance to leave behind all the negative aspect of the human kind: the pain, the sorrow, the losses, the hatred, everything… The biggest desire of them all, to start something new, fresh and pure, on a new planet. At least that was Commander Claire Vusnon though, but such high dreams usually come up a large disappointment. The Space Program was simple, three ships named Arcana were prepared to lunch the colonization of Mars, the first was supposed to send the first team to prepare everything, while the second was supposed to take in equipment, and manpower to build and prepare for the third ship, which would take the colony, and hopefully, the program would be successful. Unfortunately, the Arcana 1 never reach its destiny… Media coverage claims the ship exploded, but is it true? Considering the expenses, the space program decided to postpone the project indefinitely. On Arcane 2, was supposed to travel Commander Claire, whose dream was always to get far away from Earth, and with the incident regarding the first ship, her dreams sounded less and less a possibility, even though she worked hard and completed her physical and psychological exams with merit. Things changed when project director Mr. Fenth asked Claire for a special meeting, one in which he revealed the truth to what happened to Arcana 1. The truth would shake Claire, but would also give her a new chance to go outer space, not as a colonist, but in a rescue mission, one she immediately accepts. Together with Claire, a small team of the best space engineering, physicians, pilots, and medical support, we’ll dive into a mystery that will haunt each member of the crew individually, and the whole concept of existence, as well as the human boundaries to which will put our minds and bodies to the final test. The concept of humanity will never be the same, in what Event-D determinants the success of a species, and the final barrier between dreams and reality. Event-D is a 5 to 6 hour long Kinetic Visual Novel inspired by works such as Star Trek, and the award winning Mass Effect video game series. Players will follow Claire and her crew in a mission across our Galaxy to salvage a lost ship, and find out what really happened to Arcane 1, in a very well directed game. Thanks to its plot and the well executed narrative, it’s easy to simply get lost in the adventure, without a doubt one of most prestigious requirements any Visual Novel needs. A narrator will either explain the basic world-functions as well as characters in third person, as an introduction to any new concept. We’ve seen this method in many other games, but we still appreciate the thought of having a “back voice” to really add to the game’s motion. Characters will interact mostly through text and to themselves with thoughts, but players will have a further description of moods through the narrator. In some instances, Event-D can become a book experience, or a comic if you will, since there are no decisions to make, it’s the perfect scenario for players to lose themselves among the fluidity of its narrative. Characters dialogues are very well written, and provide a pleasant and enjoyable reading, crossing all ages. The game approaches complex issues, but never jumping into the ridiculousness of theorising the inexplicable, although some matters such as Spatial Disarray, Teleportation and Particle Fusion are some of the terms one can go deep with, and scientific references seem to come and go, but all in a perfect balance, so players always understand what’s happening. One of the re-occurring issues among Sci-Fi novels such as the evolution of Artificial Intelligence is also in focus here, with Robots being more than just machines. Could their feelings represent a danger to mankind? Clearly a well placed idea that we've seen before, but still well developed in this case, as it's an important part of the plot. Narrative is almost practical in leaving one with no questions, but having a deep curious desire for more. Event-D is both very well directed and produced, as in camera angles and positions, but also in unveiling the occurring events. The game is mostly Sci-Fi, but in the deep, dark space, it’s impossible not to mention horror, suspense, even thrilling elements of the unknown, as they come out and their intensity its well represented. Players follow not only Claire, but other crew members, which are less represented, but still become relevant and important, not only through their past, but in their present words and thoughts. Thanks to this, the ambient can become similar to one seen in a movie, or in a really good book, where players will see the interaction of various characters, and not just Claire. Visually, Event-D has a lot of personality, as it avoids typical character sprites or renders and goes for a much complete experience with 3D Workflow, in which every scene is a dedicated one, with their respective body language and character behavior. Expressions are accurate and small details change, such as reflexes and light/shadow-play, accordingly. The scenes aren’t repetitive along the game, and characters have an amazing design, with a very unique style, mixing a cartoonish 3D art direction, with the extra realistic detail or the spaceships, fabric and space suits. The overall exterior design is very exquisite and detailed, as for the interior, it has a more minimalist side, usually in empty areas or spaces such as rooms or corridors. Everything is 3D and the spaceships in particular are well worth the mention, with fantastic detail and look absolutely astonishing upon the dark but sparkling universe covered with stars! The soundtrack is engaging, with a very futuristic sound, but smooth to the ear, with electronic tunes, created by Naturatech, a producer from Colombia. Music during normal scenes is somehow melodic, and something immediately reminding us of a space adventure, resembling the Mass Effect soundtrack when in the Wards location. It's still delivers a very own style that goes really well with the game and events. More intense action scenes have their own thrilling sounds, still minimalistic but perfect for a dark ambient adventure. Overall the soundtrack suits really well for the game, and it’s currently not for sale as a DLC. Event-D is without a doubt an hidden-gem, a Visual Novel that delivers a great Sci-Fi engaging adventure, one player’s will fuse completely after a couple of hours in. Original in its visuals, the storyline is intriguing and interesting to follow, where players witness the events not only for Claire, but from a wider perspective.
I'm usually super-apprehensive about visual novels made with stills of 3D models and environments - they remind me of the billion creepy, awful porn games made with this technique and to be completely honest, it's hard to find a game in this style that actually looks decent. Event-D, while far from being perfect, at least proved wrong my immediate worries - it doesn't look amazing, but manages to keep things reasonably pleasant to look at thanks to the slight cartoonish stylisation and decent scripting. Characters still feel slightly "off", but not to the point in which it would kill all immersion. The game also doesn't force any sexual content or creepy fanservice in, focusing on the decently-thought out sci-fi story, which might not be especially original, but has some decent twists and emotional impact. The main mystery - the crew on its way to start a colonisation effort on Mars disappears in an unexplainable manner - is immediately appealing and develops at a satisfying pace. The ending is open-ended, with a direct promise of a sequel, but also can in no way be considered a cliffhanger - the main conflict is resolved and the fate of the crucial characters more or less clear. When it goes to specific scenes, the writing in dialogues and the technobabble make the whole thing feel a bit like a third-rate series on Sci-Fi Channel and while I personally don't mind this kind of aesthetic, it'd probably be hard to read for some. The game also delves into problems that were done better in dozens of pieces of media (won't say which to not spoil it) and at some point reorienting the whole plot around them, setting itself up for some unfavourable comparisons. In its core, though, it's a decently-put-together and unusual game and for the humble asking price it comes with, I have no hesitation to recommend giving it a chance. ------------------------- PS If you're interested in other quality Western VNs, check out my curator page.
Not a game but a visual novel. Very interesting Sci F story about nature of humanity and robotic life. A few typos and a few errors with english language but overall a very good story and well worth the entry price. I got nearly 5 hours out of this story so well worth it. Scrapland 7182
A very good science fiction game that, as other reviews have said, does not seem too far from reality-or the near future. Emotional, drama filled story telling at its best. Good sound track, generally a feel-good game. Worth playing through once.
It's not interactive at all, but it's one of the most pleasant sci-fi narratives I've experienced nonetheless. If you want to see what is basically a sci-fi CG comic, it's very much worthwhile in my opinion.
3/10 - Bad: Littered with spelling and grammar errors, Event-D seems like a novel where the director has forgotten that they’re doing a visual novel. The story takes great pains to tell you what is happening, what is being ‘felt’ by each character, and so on, rather than allowing the story to take place and let the place infer things or try to figure things out themselves. The various elements fail to work together; For example, visual novels have a visual aspect, there’s character sprites and background art that shows you what is happening. Oft, the novel doesn’t bother to take advantage of this, even if the art shows something happening, the text will go to great pains to explain in-depth what is actually going on. Furthermore, when there is dialogue, a dialogue box pops up with the character’s name etc. Which, excuse the obviousness, is designed to show you who is speaking. And yet, the game goes to even greater pains to point out who is saying what. Example of what gets written in a dialogue box: “This is an absurd game” says Oda, crossing his arms in annoyance (visibly on the art but screw it we’re telling you here too). “I agree” Nova said, thinking about gigantic aubergines and carrots. Why? I dunno, I’m trying to be lolrandom here. Why? It’s a visual novel, there’s a dialogue box with a nameplate on to indicate who is talking, why the hell do we need the constant ‘she ordered’, ‘he says’, ‘he exclaims’ etc? The box already identifies the speaker. The art is supposed to convey the emotion, the authority or surprise etc. What we have here is a novel where the various parts that make it a visual novel don’t work in tandem with each other, which is the ultimate sin for a visual novel in my opinion. That could be salvaged by storytelling, and indeed, there’s an interesting, if basic sci-fi story here, but the method of telling it is far too amateur, breaking every rule in the rulebook of storytelling, including telling rather than showing. One to avoid.
A hidden gem of Science-Fiction story! Event-D is a kinetic novel set in space and dealing with thematics like human evolution and artificial intelligence. The characters are all interesting, but some are more often seen than others. If you have a favorite, they may not get a lot of screen time. Talking about screens, the presentation is similar to a photo novel, where you can see illustrations of everything happening in addition to reading it. This makes it feel like watching a movie while reading its script at the same time. The story itself knows how to keep a constant flow of events to hook the reader, jumping from an unexpected event to an unsuspected twist, always in a logical way. Sci-Fi is not used here to poorly explain set up plot twists. It's a great story than every sci-fi lover should read. Highly recommended!
