RECOMMENDED Ratings 7/10 (Excellent Story, Interesting Game Mechanics) Even for Eternia is an excellent RPG Maker game that I have enjoyed tremendously. I have spent the last 20 hours playing it, and want to write a review about it because there are only 3 user review of this rare gem. Well, let me start with the cons. There is only 1 for me, and that is that the character portraits are really plain. The portraits are not fancy enough to attract people to the game. It also gives the wrong impression that this is just a mediocre game because the portraits are just plain and simple --- not fancy enough. Now that we have listed my only cons, let me tell you about the pros, which are many. First, I loved the story. There is a lot of depth to the storyline, and this is just not a "hero save the world story". It's a story with a lot of dark and intense emotions: of people who are blinded by hatre, of people who are afraid of what they do not understand, and about people who are overwhelmed by prejudice. It's a story in this fictional game universe that the developer created, a world with 3 types of beings --- the Humans (populace), the Umbras (heroes) and the Wraiths (monsters). Its a story about how the humans, the umbras and the wraiths are intricately interconnected. The gamer will only slowly realize their interconnections as you progress into the story. Secrets are slowly revealed, full of surprising twists, just like a detective novel. There are no black and white in this game, just varying shades of grey. Now about the interesting game mechanics. The developer introduce an interesting and unique Wraith system. For every 20 monsters of each type that you kill, the 20th monster will be a Wraith of that particular monster type. Basically the Wraith of that monster type is just a Champion monster - super strong, super powerful and really hard to kill. Of course the wraith will also drop a very rare crafting material called a "wraith soul", which you can use to craft the highest tier weapons and armor. So, I am always grinding to wait for my next wraith to appear, so that I can reap the benefits. Another very well developed game mechanics is the elaborate crafting system. You can buy crafting materials from shop, get them as rewards from alliance quest, pick them up in dangerous dungeons, or simply just kill monsters for the monster parts. With these crafting materials, you can start crafting your personal weapon and armor for each of your heroes. Say you kill some big snake and get some snake skin. Together with some ores and other stuff, you created your own Snake Kopis (a good dagger). This does not end there. You will need to find other materials to upgrade your dagger into Snake Kopis+1, Snake Kopis+2, etc which will get progressively more powerful, but the necessary upgrading material will also be exponentially harder to find. Ultimately, you will be able to upgrade your weapon into a legendary Wraith Snake Kopis, but to do that you have to defeat a Wraith and get a Wraith Soul for crafting. Now if you by any chance find a duplicate weapon that you do not need, you can also disassemble it into crafting materials. When upgrading, you basically reuse your old weapon with more crafting materials, so you do not keep making new weapons too. There entire crafting system is designed to minimize waste, and keep you inventory from being cluttered with lots of spare weapons. I like the streamlining process. The developer modestly put a 20-25 hours for the game, but I believe that 25 hours is only for doing the main quests. However there are also numerous side quests and alliance quests in a large game world that I have yet to explore. I am also nowhere close to getting into the game. I just started Chapter 2 and I know that this is a multi-chapter game with at least 5 chapters or more. I really look forward to enjoying this rare gem. So, I would like to recommend this game to the old school, turn-based RPG gaming community. For those that like good stories in an unique gaming universe with human/umbras/wraiths. For those are not put off by superficially mediocre character portraits.
Even for Eternia is a great game with a solid story, interesting combat mechanics, and compelling characters. Well worth the time invested to experience this gem.
https://youtu.be/zg4iUmLvhxk https://youtu.be/Rdrm2Ayrros This review has been a long time coming. Mostly because I’ve been waiting for quite some time for this game to release officially. I’m proud of what Arin, the developer, has accomplished, and the ways he’s improved the game since I streamed it a while ago. That said, this may not be considered a wholly unbiased review. I’m going off of a copy of the game that I received before steam, and I’m friends with the developer, sooooo consider this your disclaimer. Even for Eternia follows the main character, Rubellum, or Ruby for short, as she goes from loner in the woods to being of immense power and potential darkness, an Umbra, who fights off others of her kind who’ve totally gone off the deep end. It’s a solid story that focuses on loss, mostly on one’s memories, and the sacrifices one makes to protect those they care about. But it tends to go wrong. Horribly wrong. The thing I enjoyed the most about this game was when you realized something, it hits you HARD, if you’ve been following along with the game. When the name makes sense, you realize just what a character has given up. And for what? A world that reviles the Umbra. It’s thankless, but Ruby and her friends are hell bent on doing what’s right. Another major plus is the crafting system. Each main area of the game has tiers of weapons that you can craft by getting materials from combat. If you’re struggling, CRAFT NEW STUFF. +Excellent Story +Multiple crafted weapons and armor. +Quick Party Swap in Combat. +Multiple strats for Combat to Win. =Wraith Enemies. =Sometimes the story feels forced. =Crafting is your primary source of income. -Crafted weapons are obsolete once you unlock factions. -Leveling Factions = Lots of Grinding. -Some Characters Need more Story Agency.
So far this is a solid game. Once I get some more free time I want to delve deeper into it. Battles are well balanced. Great mapping, story is good, and has some cool features to it. But theres quite a bit of talkin, lol. I don't mind too much. I am just not one for the talking side of things! Other than that I haven't really ran into any bugs so far. So nice work!
I have played nearly 10 hours of this game, but I don't really know if I will go any further. This is purely a personal thing because I am losing patience with the interminable (and sometimes not very coherent) dialogue. Dialogue is obviously needed to push a story along but should be kept as succinct as possible. The occasional long exchanges are fine but I have got to the point where I am clicking through them as quickly as possible because every other discussion is a saga and most of the content is meaningless. The mapping, meanwhile, is beautiful. There are one or two little flaws (like the missing bottom corner of a window in the front of Rubellum's family home) but these do not detract from the overall visual delight of imaginatively laid out landscape and building interiors that do not have too many enormous, empty, rooms. The crafting is interesting, but the main problem I found is that you cannot tell who (if indeed any) of your party can equip something that you are making until you have already made it - at which point you may find you have created something useless to you. Combat is not something that I ever find particularly exciting (especially where grinding is required) other than boss battles which might require some tactics, so I won't comment much on that except to say that the difficulty level of enemies seems well-balanced and the characters seem to level up in a not too excrutiatingly slow manner. I can't say I like the look of the battle interface much though. It is obvious that the developer has put a lot of thought into creating the world and story and overall it and the characters are engaging enough to have kept me grinding through the dialogue to this point at least. And, again, visually it is a real pleasure. Obviously these are all personal viewpoints and I would certainly not like to say this is an unenjoyable game for everybody (and have therefore said it is recommended) but thought it fair to point out the dialogue issues, especially, for those who might find that a deal breaker.
I have about three hours in game and will edit this review when I complete the game. Positives: A very well made RPG Maker game. Gather and craft mechanics are well implemented. Character skills synergize with each other creating interesting debuff chain type combos and i'm interested to see how these mechanics are expanded upon over the course of the game. Progression is well-tempoed and there are no random encounters. Thusfar, the game itself also looks very good. Negatives: Some quality of life issues right now. When crafting you can't see who can equip a piece of gear. Minor mapping issues in puzzle rooms that can get you trapped. Don't save in them. A bit of ♥♥♥♥ erotic humor between characters. I only note this because it turns some people off - its implemented in a cute way and is not at all over the top. Overall I recommend it. If its does have 20+ hours of content I'd say the price point is right.
Note: Review will be updated once I've completed this game. Disclaimer: While I received this product for free, my opinion comes from honest critique. No game is perfect. This game is a very refreshing take on the JRPG genre. It starts off with some fairly typical (but well-written) anime tropes as the MC discovers they have a secret power which makes them special and unique. My biggest gripe is some of the character/world development surrounding the core concepts is not fully explored with the player early on. That is, it lacks a lot of establishment in the core plot. However, it is slowly exposed as the plot develops. In fact, there's a LOT of neat hints throughout the game world that serve to reinforce the plot if you take your time to look around. This game excels at that last point, creating game world nuances that make it unique and immersive. This is definitely a title you want to take your time and explore with. The combat system is engaging, though not wholly dynamic. You will use the different characters to create a party dynamic to overcome enemy strengths. Enemies will have some in-battle mechanics that will keep you on your toes, but for the most part, you will create a battle rhythm of skill combos. Later, you will have a little more control over this by being able to swap out different party members to develop and reinforce your own playstyle. The biggest problem with the combat is that it lingers on auto-pilot choose-the-obvious-move for too long. And once it does open up to more tactical thinking, it still largely incorporates a system of choosing the best options. It really isn't until you open up character swapping (which is a decent time chunk into the game) that it becomes more open and dynamic. The game world itself is massive and beautiful. The map design is mostly top notch. The sidequests and events are fun and engaging. There's hidden loot, guilds to join, and unique quests to overcome. You can easily sink many, many hours into this title. If you're jaded with standard spam-the-best-skill style RPGs, this may just be your new jumping off point! Likewise, the plot develops in some unexpected ways, creating a refreshing narrative. The characters are also not simple two-dimensional reflections of singular tropes. They develop and grow. And if you pay attention, you can notice some interesting traits in them, as well! I highly recommend giving this game a try!
