About
Almost five hundred years of history unfold before you in Europa Universalis V, the latest version of one of the greatest strategy games of all time. Guide the destiny of any of hundreds of nations and societies in a simulated living world of unparalleled depth and complexity.
Europa Universalis V builds on the franchise’s core concept of developing and advancing nations from around a deeply researched historical world, adding more detailed diplomacy, a more sophisticated economic model, a revised military system and greater logistical depth that will challenge even the most experienced strategy gamers.

RULE a land of your choosing. Hundreds of nations are yours to command, as you guide the destiny of millions of people through the late Middle Ages up to the Age of Revolution - from the mighty Yuán Dynasty to the city-states of Italy, from the warring clans of feudal Japan to the Pope himself.
DECIDE which course your nation will take. Historical events and situations await as you chart a unique path through a new history written by your decisions. Experience The Hundred Years’ War, the Protestant Reformation, the collapse of old dynasties and rise of new ones.
EXPLORE alternate histories as you shape the world to meet your ambitions. What if England succeeded in pressing its continental claims? What if China pursued an overseas empire? What if Mongol supremacy in Russia persisted? Every action opens the possibility for an original history.

IMPOSE domestic peace in a divided realm. Keep your nation’s factions in line as Estates jockey for power in your nation. Offer privileges to one group of citizens while you limit the power of another, all in the service of keeping your population under control.
NEGOTIATE your way through an uneasy peace. Use diplomacy to entrench your dynasty across realms or build an invincible alliance. But remember that nations have no permanent friends - only permanent interests; so use your ambassadors carefully. Exact favors from friends, send threats to enemies, and keep an eye on everyone in-between.
CONQUER new lands to expand your borders. Wage War on those who impede your ambition in a completely new Europa Universalis military system. Start in the age of levies and mercenaries and, through social development, evolve to vast standing armies and impenetrable fortresses. Choose skilled commanders to oversee both land and naval forces.

BUILD a strong economic infrastructure in the most detailed trade system yet seen in a Europa Universalis game. Dozens of goods and crops are available for production and trade on a map filled with new riches to discover. Invest in feeding a growing population or trade your surplus to less bountiful societies.
MOLD your society to meet the historical moment. Choose your societal values, with new options opening as the ages move on. Centralize power at court or share it with your nobles. Pursue a tolerant policy for all faiths or condemn heretics. Emphasize massed armies or an elite cadre of quality soldiers.
GOVERN a nation composed of many cultures and faiths in a detailed simulation of the past. For the first time in Europa Universalis, populations are represented on the map in detail, so provinces may be divided by religion or culture. Your decisions will determine how these populations will fare under your leadership.

PREVAIL in the greatest strategic challenges of the past. Test your expertise in grand strategic planning on a worldscape larger and more detailed than seen in any previous Paradox Interactive game. Challenge yourself to outdo the most famous rulers of the past, eclipsing their grand accomplishments and building your own vision of a richly detailed globe.

Reviews
So it has problems with the dev cycle constantly reworking core mechanics. The game is fun tho. Some runs feel like an incremental game where you just spam markets and trade offices and some runs feel like everything is going wrong. CK3 is much more polished at the time of this review so if you can only pick one go for that but this game is still pretty cool.

Rough around the edges, but still very fun
If you're into economy simulation and strategy games then this might be for you. It is unlike anything else out there, it feels truly massive and fascinating. But it's not for everyone. Many would say that the game feels unfinished, it's true that it feels like things are getting reworked every patch. At the same time we're along for the ride to see this grow to one of the greatest empire simulation games out there. Be aware, performance is a recurring issue, and I think it will remain one for as long as the game exists unfortunately

The balance is completely broken right now. The biggest offender is a massive feedback loop in the trade system that operates as an accidental infinite money glitch. By the time you hit 1450, money becomes totally meaningless. The strategic depth just vanishes, and you end up mindlessly clicking to spam buildings and roads just to watch numbers go up. But even if you ignore the broken economy, actually playing the game is a total chore. The performance is abysmal. The map lags like crazy, and because they decided to count every single hour of the day now, the game speed is agonizingly slow. It feels like you need a NASA supercomputer just to make the stuttering stop. To make matters worse, the UI is an absolute nightmare. It looks like someone dumped a hundred spreadsheets on top of each other. Trying to micromanage your trading or handle your armies takes so many endless clicks that your wrists will literally ache after an hour. They also stripped away the unique mission trees and soul that made EU4 so replayable, replacing them with generic, hollow mechanics where every country feels exactly the same. Combine that with a completely brain-dead AI that doesn't know how to fight or manage its own country, and there’s just no fun to be had.It feels totally unfinished and painfully over engineered. Save your money, skip the headache, and stick to EU4 until Paradox fundamentally overhauls this mess.
In November 2025 I tried playing EU5 soon after the launch but after about an hour of gameplay it would crasah every single time. I gave Paradox almost a year to fix it. In September 2026 the game now crashes instantly after I start. Do not download this game!
hard to master, fun to play with friends, hard for real time managment especialy if you play some normal speed(not max). must have for EU4 owners and plenty of new things to learn and keep watching for changes thru every update as it can change very important things that country you decide to play as may change and could easily end up by need to start anew as changes happened.
There's a term that perfectly sums up this "video game": Cognitive Overload. From Google -> Cognitive Overload: "when the information or demands placed on you exceed your brain's working memory capability. This state leads to mental fatigue, decision paralysis, and a drop in overall performance. There are three types: Intrinsic load: the inherent difficulty of the task or information itself. Extraneous load: the mental effort wasted on poorly presented information or distracting environments. Germane load: the productive mental effort used to process new information and permanently store it in your long-term memory." In other words: too much ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ happening at once, so my brain shuts off. You know that feeling when you just open up a new software and you see all the features and you just go: "you know what? this is too much, i don't think I'll ever be good at this so I'm just gonna save myself the trouble and turn it off." Well... I've only been able to stomach 30 minutes of this game before turning it off. It's like they combined EU4, Victoria, Crusader Kings III, and more into one game and called it a day. EU4 already had a lot to manage. This is EU4 times 100. It's just too much to be fun or enjoyable. When you load up a new game and are immediately left feeling overwhelmed, it's just not for me. I play games to turn off my brain, not feel like I'm back in college taking computer engineering exams again. [Also, I've only played for like 30 minutes but apparently the game has performance issues? I could definitely see it.] Just look at the images for this game on the store page. The screen in each image is crowded with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like you're in a sweaty mythic raid in WoW. Each interface looks like that in the game. It's way too freaking much. Sometimes, less is more. EU4 with DLCs was approaching too much already. This goes far beyond that. It's like the devs forgot that the game they're making is supposed to be fun. I think they were too busy thinking "wouldn't it be cool if this was in the game" or "we could bring in this cool feature from one of our other titles" without thinking if it was something they actually *should* do. Like, I'm here to play Europa Universalis. If I wanted to play Victoria, I would just go play it. If I wanted to play Crusader Kings 3, I would just go play it. I play EU4 because I love playing as different cultures through history and making my own revised history. Things like "what if Italy unified earlier?" or "what if Japan had colonies in the New World." That's what appeals to me. Managing every single minutiae of a nation for hundreds of years is just not it for me. I just wanna blob man. I don't even play Ming (China) in EU4 because I hate managing mandate, tributaries, religious harmony, economy, rebels and disasters and all the other crap despite really wanting to play as China. I'm not even very good at the game already then you make this game with a thousand more things to manage. So for other gamers like me that just want to chill and not feel like they need a second bachelor's or a master's degree to understand the basics of the game they just bought, I would absolutely recommend NOT buying this and just get EU4 instead, just the base game then add DLCs as you learn. This game is just too much to handle for smooth brain computer engineers like myself that just want to play a video game like a video game, not like a job. Finally... Paradox DLC practices are already coming in hot to milk your wallet and bank account by adding features that should have just been in the game at the start like in EU4 haha...
