About
Almost five hundred years of history unfold before you in Europa Universalis V, the latest version of one of the greatest strategy games of all time. Guide the destiny of any of hundreds of nations and societies in a simulated living world of unparalleled depth and complexity.
Europa Universalis V builds on the franchise’s core concept of developing and advancing nations from around a deeply researched historical world, adding more detailed diplomacy, a more sophisticated economic model, a revised military system and greater logistical depth that will challenge even the most experienced strategy gamers.

RULE a land of your choosing. Hundreds of nations are yours to command, as you guide the destiny of millions of people through the late Middle Ages up to the Age of Revolution - from the mighty Yuán Dynasty to the city-states of Italy, from the warring clans of feudal Japan to the Pope himself.
DECIDE which course your nation will take. Historical events and situations await as you chart a unique path through a new history written by your decisions. Experience The Hundred Years’ War, the Protestant Reformation, the collapse of old dynasties and rise of new ones.
EXPLORE alternate histories as you shape the world to meet your ambitions. What if England succeeded in pressing its continental claims? What if China pursued an overseas empire? What if Mongol supremacy in Russia persisted? Every action opens the possibility for an original history.

IMPOSE domestic peace in a divided realm. Keep your nation’s factions in line as Estates jockey for power in your nation. Offer privileges to one group of citizens while you limit the power of another, all in the service of keeping your population under control.
NEGOTIATE your way through an uneasy peace. Use diplomacy to entrench your dynasty across realms or build an invincible alliance. But remember that nations have no permanent friends - only permanent interests; so use your ambassadors carefully. Exact favors from friends, send threats to enemies, and keep an eye on everyone in-between.
CONQUER new lands to expand your borders. Wage War on those who impede your ambition in a completely new Europa Universalis military system. Start in the age of levies and mercenaries and, through social development, evolve to vast standing armies and impenetrable fortresses. Choose skilled commanders to oversee both land and naval forces.

BUILD a strong economic infrastructure in the most detailed trade system yet seen in a Europa Universalis game. Dozens of goods and crops are available for production and trade on a map filled with new riches to discover. Invest in feeding a growing population or trade your surplus to less bountiful societies.
MOLD your society to meet the historical moment. Choose your societal values, with new options opening as the ages move on. Centralize power at court or share it with your nobles. Pursue a tolerant policy for all faiths or condemn heretics. Emphasize massed armies or an elite cadre of quality soldiers.
GOVERN a nation composed of many cultures and faiths in a detailed simulation of the past. For the first time in Europa Universalis, populations are represented on the map in detail, so provinces may be divided by religion or culture. Your decisions will determine how these populations will fare under your leadership.

PREVAIL in the greatest strategic challenges of the past. Test your expertise in grand strategic planning on a worldscape larger and more detailed than seen in any previous Paradox Interactive game. Challenge yourself to outdo the most famous rulers of the past, eclipsing their grand accomplishments and building your own vision of a richly detailed globe.

I picked up EUV at launch, after having been a fan of the series since EUII. I was immediately hooked by the complex economic and demographical simulations, the incredible depth and commitment to historical accuracy, but at the same time, there were definitely some rough edges - and that's putting it lightly. Every single one of my early playthroughs, which I did enjoy while they lasted, was eventually stopped dead in its tracks by frustrating bugs, interface issues, mechanics with bizarre and usually unintended consequences, etc. At the time that I'm writing this review, patch 1.3 has just come out, and I finally feel that I can wholeheartedly recommend this game to any fans of the genre. I've just completed my first full campaign (as Novgorod) from 1337 to 1836, and it was a blast from start to finish. The rough edges have been smoothed, the game is more stable, the UI feels more intuitive and less intrusive, and they've taken a look at some of the events and mechanics that were functioning in a way that led to frustration for many players. Now, what separates EUV from the previous entry? The main difference with EUIV is that this game takes a much more simulationist and less abstracted approach. Every location in every province in the world has a fully simulated population associated with it, with demographic characteristics such as culture(s), religion(s), population size, population growth, migration attraction, and estate distribution (the relative size of the various social classes). This interacts with almost every single other aspect of the game, especially the economy, in a way that is very realistic for a video game, and that I find very engaging. Another example is that if you raise levies during a war and they die, you will actually lose population in the provinces that they were raised from. I don't know of any other game that goes this in-depth, even Paradox's own Victoria series isn't really comparable. This same depth is of course also a drawback in the sense that there's a steep learning curve. You need to be willing to put in the time and effort to familiarize yourself with the mechanics, if you want to get the most out of this game. Yes, there are options to automate just about everything if you are so inclined, but most players won't get much enjoyment out of having the game play itself. Many people will be overwhelmed by the complexity and the sheer number of options and mechanics, and even if they're not, they might not be interested in the time period, or prefer the more abstracted boardgame approach of EUIV. Paradox also has a habit of adding even more bloat and complexity as time goes on, in their questionable attempts at emulating a live service model for their games. Final verdict: if you are a grand strategy gamer with a preference for realistic simulation, this is an absolute must-buy. There is no other game even remotely like it at the moment. If that doesn't describe you, EUV still has a lot to offer, but it likely won't grab you in the same way, and you have to decide for yourself whether it sounds like it would be worth the effort to wade through its complexity.

EUV is an excellent base for a Paradox game, and I am giving it a positive review because I have had a ton of fun and know this game will be incredible once its potential is reached. The game's core systems are deep and the game is truly a sandbox of epic proportions. For all the game's present faults, the devs are clearly working to fix problems at a fast pace (perhaps too fast a pace) and I have faith that in short order the game's issues will be ironed out. While the release and first few updates have been rocky, things are gradually improving. The main issue with the game other than bugs and performance is that the developers seem to treat balance as if this is a pvp game rather than a historical sandbox. In a time period where states that embraced commercialization and centralization often gained insurmountable advantages over their peers, it is not logical for societal values like traditional economy, serfdom, and decentralization to be "balanced." Along these lines, each update has brought with it extensive changes to the game's balance which have wrought havoc on the game and required numerous hotfixes to adjust. In addition, upon the release of each new update, the game has generally been a buggy mess. An open beta for the next patch has generally followed the release of each patch, and these open betas have generally been successful at resolving each patch's issues. However, for reasons beyond my comprehension, by the time each update actually releases, a whole new batch of balancing issues and bugs manifest themselves which require a new open beta to sort out. As I love playing with mods, the constant stream of patches and open betas have forced me to take a break. It is simply a pain to look at the steam workshop when half the mods are updated to the latest open beta patch and the other half are waiting for the next full update to come out. I will just wait for things to stabilize a bit and major mods like MEIOU and Taxes to progress in development before fully diving into the game. If the devs focused more on fleshing out existing systems and fixing core bugs than tweaking 100 modifiers each patch, then the reviews for this game would likely be very positive. One last thing, the recent Fate of the Phoenix DLC is an insult to the medieval Eastern Roman Empire. Rather than consult esteemed historians of medieval Roman history, like Paradox did with the analogous CK3 expansion, the developers for EUV instead turned the Greek speaking and Orthodox Eastern Roman Empire into an ancient Roman LARP-fest. I only hope this DLC gets revisited down the line.
When i read that we can build Cities even bigger now i actually got excited for a moment... until i tried doing it and got 6 Smallpox outbreaks and a second round of the bubonic plague in about 20 years... which reminded me why i stopped playing this game. Not recommended unless you are seriously Masochistic. And if you are there's probably better ways to torture yourself.

I completely agree with the vision of getting rid of mana in favor of dynamic growth since mana was used a place holder for extremely complicated concepts. Mana was used in EU4 to simulate things like province development while in EU5 this is replaced with dynamic development like population, literacy, buildings, ect. Replacing mana is beyond fantastic! However, again, mana was used to replace complicated concepts - do I need to mention how much of this game is simply underdeveloped! don't simulate complicated concepts if you dont have the development time to flesh out those concepts (like in-game population growth being so far from reality)! Replacing mana with realism is a very hard thing to do and I understand why paradox is struggling with this overall game. This thing needs to bake more in the oven and should not be recommended until the mechanics work closer to reality.
Still some bugs and weird interactions but this is a fantastic game in my opinion. It will take time to learn the systems and it is usually rewarding when you do. Biggest gameplay improvement over eu4 is the pop building system actually working and getting rid of mana. Biggest improvement over EU4 from a consumer standpoint is they released game updates for everyone and DLC is for flavor content for specific countries.
