Etrange Overlord

I was excited for this game as a sort of spiritual successor to the Rhapsody series and I can happily say that for the most part, I was not disappointed. Etrange Overlord carries on the spirit of the Rhapsody games in its charming writing and presentation. Every character in this game is pretty delightful, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much screentime everybody receives, given the relatively large cast of characters and the short playtime (I finished the game in just over 13 hours, not exactly 100%ing it, but at least completing all of the optional mission challenges). The narrative goes places, I don't want to spoil anything, but watching Etrange's almost psychotic levels of ambition get her into continuously increasing higher stakes scenarios is probably the most fun part of the game. The actual gameplay is frantic, simple, and at least in my opinion, pretty fun. Each level involves you running around trying to complete an objective while fending off waves of enemies, it's straight forward, but pretty satisfying, especially if you try to complete the optional challenges that are on each stage as you go. It is pretty easy to be overpowered by the end of the game, but hey, that can be part of the fun an RPG can't it? If there is one major place where I was disappointed, it was the music, the game bills itself as a musical similar to the aforementioned Rhapsody games, but it really isn't much of one. Characters will briefly burst into song for all of maybe 30 seconds before a "song" ends, which was pretty disappointing. All and all though, everything else made up it and I can happily say that I really enjoyed this game. If you're looking for a fun, easy breezy RPG adventure, it's worth picking up.

Etrange Overlord is flawed but a really fun game full of comedy, random musicals out of nowhere and surprisingly good action segments that feels out of some arcade game. The good things: - The comedy is spot on, I never going to get tired of the bit of characters being hurt in the cutscenes and the random "999" damage numbers showing up. - The Soundtrack - The game go to some crazy and unexpected directions, tell me how many games have the message (Spoilers) [spoiler]"God can now be used in battle."[/spoiler] But the game also have some flaws here and there: - The game lacks Post-game content, once you defeat the final level that's it, there is nothing else to do, which I find strange because the developers could have easily added some random extra hard challenges reusing old levels or something. - The ending is a bit awkward, there is a lot that ends up unexplained, and SPOILERS: [spoiler]The redemption of Angelina feels too forced after all she did, also she never have a plan at all? The Heroes, the wedding, etc all of that wasn't part of a big plan and it was just for fun? That was... kind of dumb honestly.[/spoiler] I want to mention that Etrange's Seiyuu Kaori Mizuhashi did an amazing job and it is easily the spotlight for me, if you are a fan of her this is a must have, she did an amazing performance in this game. A perfect "7/10" game, nothing ground breaking but it is a really fun game for a weekend.

I like some things about this game but overall it's just too basic. The whole game felt like a tech demo or an alternate mode for a different game. Every character only has one attack combo that can't be upgraded or altered in any way. All characters have a special move but it can only be used if you collect an item for it. There's items floating around each battlefield and you are 100% reliant on using them. One is an attack boost, one lets you use your special, one is a bomb, one heals you or the team, and the last item is basically a battery to power certain stage props. Some stages have like turrets you can fire up and others will have like a black hole that controls crowds of enemies. Outside of combat is where this game falls completely apart for me. You can upgrade the items you pick up to increase their effects but it becomes quite a grind to get these leveled up. Thankfully you don't need to fully upgrade everything to beat the game. It would've been cool if you could customize which items appear so you could pick the best ones for each battle or if you could add additional effects when you get the items but instead, all the upgrades are just generic stat increases. There are no levels to grind for, no gear to obtain, no secrets to find, no post-game content, just doing the same stages over and over again to get materials to make the game easier. I liked the story enough to finish it however, because it's lacking in every other aspect I cannot recommend Etrange Overlord in good faith.

原作がなろう小説で書かれていたというだけあって、読みやすくビジュアルノベルとして満足度のある作品でした。 RPGとしてみると、サクサクお手軽に遊べるがボリュームとしてはちょっと物足りないかもしれません。 個人的には非常に楽しめたので、キマイラ文庫で掲載されているお話の続きやゲームとしての続編を楽しみに待ってます。

Etrange Overlord é um jogo curto (cerca de 15h) que sabe terminar na hora certa, sem enrolar. A história é leve e divertida, com personagens bem caricatos no estilo anime. A jogabilidade não é difícil, mas exige alguns replays para completar objetivos e evoluir o time. A tradução em inglês é fiel no geral, mas perde algumas piadas por mudanças de nomes. O modo online funciona como farm, mas não encontrei jogadores para testar. Pelo preço cheio, pode pesar pela duração, então vale testar a demo antes.

Missions rotate between objectives like defeating enemies, guarding NPCs, capturing points, or delivering items before the opposing team does, which keeps the gameplay fresh even though the combat itself is fairly simple and a bit button-mashy. The real strength here is the character variety. There are 16 playable characters, and many of them genuinely feel better suited for certain mission types, so experimenting with different roles adds a lot of fun to the experience. The story is also fun. It's comedic, charming, and surprisingly well-written without feeling overly chaotic. That said, the combat doesn't evolve much over time, boss fights can feel like damage sponges instead of tactical battles, and the musical theme isn't used as heavily in gameplay as the marketing might suggest. There's also some grinding if you're aiming for full completion. Still, the campaign length is just right, the pacing is solid, the visuals are charming, and the game runs extremely smoothly with very fast load times. If you enjoy light action RPGs with quirky humor and mission-based gameplay, this is an easy recommendation. Just don't expect deep combat systems or massive RPG complexity.
