This game is not going to be for everyone, but I absolutely loved it. It was not on my radar at all, but I am so glad I gave it a chance after reading a glowing review elsewhere. For me, the game was way more than the sum of its parts. I believe one's enjoyment is going to hinge on whether or not the script hits for them. It is silly and full of dumb jokes, but also filled with heart and plenty of characterization. If the humor doesn't hit for you, you will find it intolerable. But if it does, you will find a lot of great character moments and dialogue along with it. I didn't find the humor laugh out loud funny, generally, but it was cute and put a lot of smiles on my face. The game also has several short musical numbers, like Sohei Niikawa's predecessor Rhapsody, though they are not as long, elaborate, or frequent as that game. I wish it had more, but what is there is delightful. The gameplay is very basic action-RPG, but kept things fresh enough for me throughout the relatively short running time. If you insist on more complicated battle systems, you may find it boring. But if you can find some enjoyment in simple battle systems that mix things up with different mission objectives, a wide variety of characters to use, and an item system that helps to turn the tide of battle, you will have fun here. The fact that the game isn't too long meant it stayed fun for me throughout the run time, except for an occasional annoying battle or two. The game was fairly easy on the normal difficulty, even for someone like me who mostly avoids action games, but it also provides an easy "Sweets" mode you can toggle to at any time outside of battles if you run into trouble. Yes, the game looks budget, and it IS budget, but they spent every dime wisely. The game still looks very appealing, and I had zero performance issues or bugs. No frame drops, no nothing. When you boot up the game after the first time, it immediately boots you right into where you left off, with only a second or two of load times- no waiting for several annoying logos and a title screen. The game is fully voiced in Japanese and most of the VAs are excellent with a cast of over a dozen playable characters. The localization is quite good- as I mentioned, the script is humorous, and it nails that aspect completely. I only noticed 4 typos throughout the entire script (I didn't read all of the item descriptions, so there could be more there). It definitely feels like a lot of care went into localizing this, more than I expected. And, of course, the developers themselves poured their hearts into making this game, and it shows. If the game looks at all appealing to you, give the demo a try. It's about two hours long and is an excellent representation of the full game. Progress also carries over to the full game. If you don't like the demo, you won't like the full game. If you like the demo, you will like the full game. I understand people may be hesitant given the price for what looks like a low budget game, but I had a lot more fun with this than the full-priced, full-budget new releases I've bought this year. (edited for a typo)
Starting to write this review while credits rolling. PROS: - Surprisingly while graphics style can be simplistic, there are often animations that are just for fun. - Stuff that happens sometimes in background is nice. - I like character design style (this same designer as Re: Zero) CONS: - 11h to roll the credits it way to short for that price... but on the other hand... - Gameplay is clunky. Very clunky. It is just not fun to play. - Mission design leave lot to be desired. While it may be interesting to do stuff like collecting stuff, or capture and hold. but with how stupid companion AI is it add another level of difficulty. Also to add another hurdle game tends to spawn enemies on to of your collection point or control point already controlled by you (it is also made that way the moment number of enemies is grater on single point, you automatically loose point. In normal Capture and Hold there is usually timer before you loose control of point). - team AI is very bad (rangers going to melee kind of bad). - Story is mehhh… Lets be honest Villainess, become another one next to Isekai, or Reincaration trope that is seriously OVERUSED, and should be passe for long time. Game contains all 3 of these. - Humor… was it supposed to be humorous game? If yes Then I can count how many times they made me smirk on single hand… And this include post credit sequence. - Too many characters, and they really didn’t got time for proper characterization. - Revolt system – it may force you to replay previous mission, and mission can be bad, or you can get some serious debuffs (like enemies dealing double dmg)… if gameplay was more fun without some tedious missions then I wouldn’t mind it. Head scratches: - Translation – I know that image show, and they describe cheeseburger… but why to change it if VA call it “Hamburgaa”. Another one is names isn’t it like you shouldn’t change names ever… I know that some names are onomatopoeia, but still why...
Etrangle Overlord - 6.5/10 - Ms. Rosenberg has been killed. She was accused of assassinating the king, but we know that isn't true. That’s okay, though; she simply goes to Hell and decides to take it over. The story is actually quite fun. It has those zany Disgaea vibes mixed with musical scores, giving it a fun, bouncy feel with some cute moments thrown in. As we progress, we get to see her exact her revenge in the best way possible. The gameplay is where I’m split. It features a fun, party-like system where you have to take down enemies in an arena style stadium to complete different objectives. While it's cool and offers unique ways to battle baddies, it starts to feel a bit boring around the 6–8 hour mark. The combat mostly consists of pressing one button mixed with a special move, and that’s about it. I think it's a fun game for a shorter playthrough, featuring entertaining cutscenes, but it lacks the depth I had hoped to see. If you can rent it or pick it up for a low price, it’s worth a play just for the vibes alone. Video Review - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6t_A_LyruI
This game plays like an arcadey party game of old. It has a bunch of interactable items and a bunch of characters with their own special abilities for you to choose. It's also fairly simple in design but also very chaotic. There is an oddness to the game similar to the villainous girl animes that exist nowadays. It's very simple and childlike. As you progress, more features unlock as well as more characters which add some passive progression. It also has some short musical numbers woven around the missions. Overall, I think its worth it, especially because the multiplayer is fun given the interactive elements and the special abilities that synergize with the team and the lane items and interactables make the battles pretty interesting. I would highly recommend playing the demo though because it starts out pretty basic without the lanes and interactables and the save data travels over to the main game.
I really like the voice actress for Sweetia, she is very cute
The titular ojou-sama Étrange and her hilarious personality consistently shine, but this game delights in other ways too. I love the entire cast, even as it grew pretty big over the course of the story. Very charming. While the musical numbers are often short and don't have the most lively camera/character blocking, they're still fun, just one of many areas where the creators' soul is evident. I feared that the shallow combat would make it hard to appreciate everything worth appreciating, but the stages actually remain chock-full of different gimmicks, objectives, enemies, and bosses. So the action experience shows effort nonetheless; those conveyor belts put an unexpected wrinkle in the button-mashing. The last few stages had a notable difficulty spike, prompting me to care more about my party, upgrades, and basic positioning. It's a great time overall. Even though the price might be too steep for some of the production values, it's quite polished, and I had no technical issues whatsoever.
Absolute Cinema, Absolute Fun. 22 all-time peak players are definitely some sabotage from publisher or someone else. This game deserves much more ads and players so much.
Etrange is a wonderful, whimsical and fantastical experience that says what it wants to and then cleanly exits center stage without overstaying it's welcome, from start to finish it manages to engage with the simple and satisfying gameplay, entertain with the fully voiced scenes between characters, and captivate with it's story and optional cutscenes, it harkens back to a time before games were sandboxes filled with as big an assortment of various guff as possible for the player to kill time with, instead guiding you through it's cute overworld with seperate stages that each present their own challenge to overcome, it runs great and you can even play it with your friends, the only thing that'd put off is the price and somewhat fairly so, still concision is a quality all it's own and having played through and three stared every stage, I think it's fair enough. Etrange as a game is a success.
