«Er-Spectro»
Not so many reviews for this retro shooter I see.. Well, for 1€, it could have been way worse, but still it's very hard for me to recommend this title. The game starts with a strange windowed mode and you are quite forced to turn it full-screen, which means a rectangle with two enormous black squares at the screen borders. There are not many options, and it seems that the developers wanted to make this really arcade and retro-style. In fact, it's only keyboard-driven. No mouse action at all, even for menu navigation. The main menu presents us the classical high score leaderboard, plus a small option/config button that allows you to choose between full screen or windowed mode, and the usual sound/music on and off. The sounds are really 8-bit like, but the soundtrack is the same MIDI 5-seconds track played over and over and the bullets make a different sound going up and down a musical scale. It's definitely annoying and you'd want to play everything muted. As I was saying, the menu has only the play option and this is a big downside: no tutorial at all, no hints on what are the commands, if there are upgrades, nothing at all - you're put right into the action. It's a simple game, of course, but a "how to play" section in my opinion was definitely useful for newcomers, especially since this isn't a standard Space Invaders game but adds some quirks to the retro/minimalistic sector. Basically, there are only two different keys: the movement ones, which are WASD and the directional keys, and the confirm button, which is also the shooting button, and in my keyboard (Central European style, can't speak for others of course) the buttons Space, Enter and CTRL have all this same funcion: by pushing them you can navigate the menus (Esc key for going back) and you'll shoot in-game. Coming at the game section proper, there are three difficulty settings, namely normal mode (which features health regeneration and a standard section of 7 consecutive bosses with normal monsters in-between), expert mode (harder bosses, more levels, more enemies) and endless mode, which basically you go from stage to stage (there are 7 levels as I said in the normal mode, 8 levels in the hard one) and the difficulty increases. Not the most relaxing thing, anyways. The gameplay is quite strange: shooting and such is smooth (you can hold ctrl, space etc. to continuously shoot), but you're tied to a badly-drawn rainbow ball (still have to figure out the meaning of it) and you'll move accordingly to the white line that links you to it. This in my view makes the game very strange to play and not that pleasing, since you almost never know where your bullets are going to hit. Oh, on the bottom left there are the usual points, on the bottom right the health bar which will be unique for all the levels (as I said, if you play on normal it will regenerate but it's also not that hard to die). At times, the rainbow ball will move and you'll move with it, so well, it adds some difficulty but also a big random factor to the whole game, considered also that the setting stays standard and arcade-like: enemies come from the top, but you're moving due to that rainbow thing. Plus, there are no hints at all on which point are you in a particular moment, so you basically never know when the boss will come. And it is very, very frustrating that the rainbow ball will move when you're shooting, sometimes even in the upper side of the screen, so that your WASD movement is completely screwed up.. and everything gets difficult to manoeuver, although this is balanced from the fact that played in normal mode the game isn't that difficult and your HP regenerates. Unfortunately the game doesn't connect to the Steam overlay and I couldn't take screenshots, but what you see in the game hub page is basically everything you get. The bosses consist of pixelated big balls on the centre of the screen, and although the game says that you get new abilities on defeating them, I saw only an increase in the difficulty amount - more enemies, basically. The bullet stays the same, so maybe they could have added an autofire option since there's no penalties if you keep space (or ctrl, or enter) pressed down the whole game. Plus, apart from the bosses being the same balloon shooting more and faster bullets at you, there are only three enemies - green, white and red things, mainly arrows and circles. Unfortunately it isn't as the game page says: the bosses aren't different, they are just big circles shooting bullets at you, and you don't even have a clue on what level you're in. So, I don't know, if it was free it could have deserved a trial but in my opinion it's more frustrating than funny (yeah, even with the mandatory volume at 0%) and it provides no challenge at all. Don't misunderstand me: the game gest actually harder, and the hard and endless modes are hard, but they're hard only because there are tons of enemies and you've got less health. You keep on being tied to that rainbow ball, being buffeted through the screen and trying to shoot and move in the best way you can while avoiding enemies and bosses' bullets. It's surely a strange twist for a shooter minimalistic game, but it's a weird one and there are no interesting positive points to mark out. It could have been way more worked for what concerns both the movement/shooting system (with real upgrades, different bullets and so on) and the enemy/level system, since every level consist of the same basic background with more enemies and without spaces in-between. So, if you're looking for a challenging, yet annoying and frustrating arcade shooter game, this can be entertaining for a handful of minutes but I really can't imagine days passed on this entry. For every other player, there's nothing in this game that justifies it for being sold when there are lots of other arcade shooters, often with the same retro flavour but with more interesting level, upgrade, enemy etc. system available for free on Flash websites. I think that this game could have been developed way better for everything I pointed out, but as it is I can't really recommend it.
The game was completed in 10 minutes The game is a bit acceptable is okay
Er-Spectro is a badly made 2D retro pixel arcade style shoot 'em up/bullet hell game with basically no effort put into any of it. It's slapped together lazily with GameMaker Studio, blight on gaming that it is, and the developer couldn't even be bothered borrowing/stealing/buying any assets to make this an asset flip, it's got 2D retro pixel art that probably took less than 30 minutes to tap out in MS-Paint or whatever. Really scraping the bottom of the Steam barrel here. The game has 7 bosses and most people who played the game didn't bother with the first one. The gameplay is badly done, the controls obtuse, the graphics hard on the eyes. And this is a paid product, too. They actually want money for this. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The graphics here are some of the worst, laziest attempt at video game "art" I've ever seen. It's hard to suggest this game even has graphics. It's just untextured, basic pixel blocks and blobs, the kind that an infant child might be able to create in 5 minutes on MS Paint. It's clear the developer didn't even try to produce any real graphics for the game and just phoned it in. It's unclear why such a lazy approach was taken, whether it may be caused by lack of talent, budget, or motivation to do their job properly. It also doesn't matter... what matters is that this has resulted in a game with zero visual appeal for gamers. It's an immediate failure on that measure alone. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. The game only displays in a bizarre 3:4 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, and had never seen a PC before so accidentally put the monitor on it's side and that's how the developed the game. Maybe they made the aspect ratio bad as a joke? It's unclear, but also doesn't matter too much... what matters is that it's another reason not to bother with this game. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", TheDreik has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Er-Spectro didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for killing the Indigo boss, but only around 37 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. And that epic failure to appeal to gamers is compounded by the fact the developer managed to dump the game into bundles from three entirely different bundle merchants. Er-Spectro is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
7 minutes game if you just want to finish it once and forget about it. You need a few minutes to actually find all the controls just by randomly smashing the keyboard. All you need to do is to press the fire button which makes you auto-fire and then move that "thing" you control left/right and rarely up/down. There are 7 bosses on normal difficulty. Very primitive. Waste of time of a game.
