Electric Sleep is a short pixel art visual novel. You explore a crumbling world as an emotionally driven robot after you wake up in a strange lab over and over again, but each time in the grip of a new emotion. Each playthrough is rather short and will take just about 5-10 minutes. But there're 44 different endings, so you'll have lots of opportunities to seek answers and discover how each emotion colours your experience of the world. I most definitely find the idea quite interesting. Despite all those 'routes' being short, they have many meaningful choices. Great evocative soundtrack & nice writing skilfully make us experience all those emotions. You can't help but dive into that pregnant atmosphere. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1731858211 But you know, I've become kinda spoiled by visual novels with great number of different settings. That's what I pay attention to first and therefore make first impression about the whole game. Here there's only window mode and sound on/off, then you unlock the map, not that it's very useful but feature anyway. I'd like more. The first playthrough was very slow-paced. I let myself be drawn by that slow rhythm but soon it began to feel too sluggish. There's no text speed option, so then it was lots of clicking to propel the messages and make the scenes change faster. No save option but I prefer to make saves before every choice to return to it later. It'd be nice to have some kind of gallery or at least the list of endings (44 is a lot). It'd be convenient to keep track of them, at some point I lost count of how many I actually managed to achieve. There's no guide. I still miss 'guilt' emotion, according to global ach stats the rarest achievement. And I was a bit reluctant to continue that endless process to try more options. Plus, it felt a bit weird: I got that 'Living' ach, watched a nice ending with credits and typical “Thank you for playing” but...that loop of awakening started again. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1731858133 By the way, the ending even gave some positive aftertaste but...
it's still kinda hard to imagine that those remaining robots will truly be able to clean up the mess or build smth worthy after humanity has abandoned the Earth for outer space.
Though I guess the game is made perfectly to deliver the message. You can't actually control anything (forget about usual calming settings), just constant loop of waking up and doomed to failure exploration of the abandoned world. Very atmospheric experience. Soon that unsettling feeling I had, turned into some kind of mood. I don't think I'll ever replay it but it's nice when games make you ponder and feel some emotions drawing you into the conceived atmosphere. Although this game is relatively short and simplistic in its design it is amazing how strong a hold it can have on you. Its beauty lies in how well all of its components work together to take you on a journey through the (human) psyche. The start may be a bit slow but after it gains momentum the sort of heavy feeling in the beginning is supplanted by yearning for more. The story is eloquently revealed through a variety of perspectives (this description really doesn't do the storytelling justice), the art beautifully reflects the ambience the text creates, and the soundtrack enriches every aspect of the game but also shines on its own. TL;DR: Liked it would recommend, roller coaster of emotions with a couple hours of gameplay and really cool music.
Electric Sleep sets itself apart from all the other visual novels. It's got a serene feel to it and it's all like all internal monologue, something that people would have if they went through all the things the robot goes through. I really liked that every single wake up meant more pieces of the puzzle. So there's constant discovery while also experiencing different feelings. So, no matter your own personality type, you'll be able to relate to how the robot feels, not every time but at certain times. Try out Electric Sleep, preferably at night, with everything quiet so it's only you, the sounds of the game's world, and the robot's thoughts. :)
I fell in love with this game right away, and it only got better from there. With superb writing and music, it's an intriguing and touching look at how emotions alter our perspective and shape our world. It's mostly text, with the stunning pixel art images providing illustrations for what you're reading, and the music changing as you progress to match your mood and situation. Certainly not for everyone, but if you think you might enjoy this, you probably will. It holds a special place in my heart. Full video review: https://youtu.be/OECFtPRR6JQ
A neat little story game with atmospheric music. It is QUITE short, especially if you're impatient and a fast reader, but fun to explore.
An immersive -emotional- experience. This visual novel-like game is a strong combination of very good writing and soundtrack. It gets your mind and soul moving. I really enjoyed playing and would recommend it. It got me invested enough to want to unlock everything. It took me about 3.4 hours. Very pleasant experience. It could easily charge more.
A relaxing jaunt, I especially liked how each primary emotion that's unlocked changes the whole tone of the story. It's written well, and a fast 100%. c:
This game is essentially a simple mini text adventure with many branching paths. If you don't like text adventures or interesting stories, this isn't your game; however if you love cool stories that change the entire theme, feel, and mood of the game with each playthrough, boy howdy do I have quite the cup of coffee's worth of game for you. It's a good game. I've only played through it twice, and seen maybe about 5-10 % of the game, but even out of that I've had a good enough time. The writing is very well done, and adventure is quite enticing.
This is a relatively brief game ( well, it's more of a visual novel ) anyways - you are faced with choices, you make choices - the story pushes on and then it ends ( pretty brief segments, maybe about 5 minutes each if you're a quick reader ) after your decisions come to a spear-head, you are " rebooted " with an emotion engine activated. Now, you restart - sort of. Depending on what emotion you triggered in the previous run, you now see the same world in a new light ( literally, and figuratively ) for example, I activated JOY my first run, and then every decision and line of text was changed to reflect this. After a run ends, you are shown a chart of your progress, which I imagine is all the possible choices you can make, their outcomes - and what emotions you had active, or learned at the time to influence it. I had 4 different endings in the same exact tower with windows - neat part being, I didn't even go that way - the story found it's way their organically through a combination of my choices + the robot's emotions at the time. It's neat in a way, bc you can see hwo the emotions affect literally everything - like the very first room you walk into has a computer monitor, and you can only read SOME of the text on it. If you're angry, you only see the words that spell out a phrase which will make you even more angry. When your joyful, you read a message that instills joy in your robot. when you're scared, it reads out like a psychological death threat - and this impacts the story itself . I imagine when you unlock all the emotions, and master them - you will see the entire actual message ) although, you can piece it together by just remembering what it said in different emotional states ) not a bad take on a choose your own adventure, sort of deal. The pixel work isn't too bad, but there's little to no animation, so that might bug a few ppl. what you're getting here is a pretty in-depth story that you control, and it's kinda cool to see how the robot sees the exact same scenario totally different, based on how it's feeling. if you're into chill stuff, like reading - or enjoy choose your own adventures, this might appeal to you.
