El juego es muy decente, y he leido sobre lo mal que lo esta pasando el creador asi que hoy por ti y mañana por mi. Recomendado 100%.
Oof. Upfront: I was gifted this game by a friend who wanted to support the dev because we both read the post-mortem about the fellow quitting his job with only enough money to survive for four months. We felt sorry for him, so I agreed to play and review this. I expected that I would love this roguelike, because it's one of my favorite game genres. ... But the sad truth of the matter is, this game just isn't very good. It's a roguelike dungeoncrawler in the old, old style. Think of Nethack, or Brogue, or any classic ASCII game. Despite this game's graphical style, that's what you're playing: you're @, you have a few weapons, skills, and potions to your name, and that's about it. While this game controls with WASD and QE to turn, everything else is the archaic style: ? for commands, M for the map, P to pick things up, O to open doors, I for inventory. It's simple, it's straightforward, I honestly don't mind this! Once I figured out what I had to do, playing this game is easy. You bump attack enemies, or cast spells at them through spellbooks and scrolls in your inventory, and so on. Here's my first set of problem with the game: there are a few typos in item-descriptions. Not a good sign. Second, if you're a spell-caster or rogue who relies on throwing weapons or pistols, to use these attacks, you have to open up the inventory and select the item to use it every single time you want to attack. There isn't a hotkey. It adds a slight delay to every attack, which is just... not good. I know this sounds nitpicky, but the lack of polish hurts, especially when it continues into the rest of the game. So the gameplay. Roam around a dungeon map in standard dungeon-crawler design, killing enemies, finding new gear, ascending to harder and harder floors. Straightforward, again, but... the dungeon tileset never changes. I made it up to floor seven and it was the exact same gray walls. The only difference were the monsters. And this hurts, especially because you can find portals that take you to optional areas with absolutely charming level design - towns, snowy forests, a pirate ship - all of these creative, fun places are... optional. While you should visit them to get the good gear in there, if you opt not to, you're stuck with the same boring dungeon. (And there are no traps or puzzles or anything. Just randomized stair placement, randomized portal placement, and lots of wooden crates that sometimes have loot in them.) Which leaves you with the monsters. They have fun sprites! ... They vary in fun levels. In the first level, if you start as the berserker class (there are three classes, essentially warrior, rogue, and mage with fancy names) - once you remember to put on your equipment, because you don't start with anything equipped - you're going to tear through everything. You'll meet a bunch of priests who throw daggers at you and do no damage. All of the monsters in this game love to throw items around - bombs, potions, swords - I've had health potions thrown at me, to no effect. Which is puzzling, but okay! There are other monsters - squiddy priests who cast meteor spells at you, pugilists who throw bombs / try to attack you, etc. A good variety, and most of them have ranged attacks you need to account for. So far so good, right? Varied enemies with interesting designs and attacks are good, right? ...The balance is extremely weird. If you're a berserker, nothing does any damage to you until level 3 or 4, where they start doing 10+ damage per attack. When you have 50hp (give or take). And then the next level jumps up to 20 damage, and more. So you go from overpowered to maybe balanced to suddenly drowning in lethal enemies, and healing - healing potions drop, but not reliably. You don't regenerate unless you find an enchanted axe, and it only heals 0.1 hp every few turns. So you're starving for HP until you find a spellbook of healing, which provides unlimited healing - 10 hp a turn, whenever you can cast it. So how are you supposed to survive? By using the thrown items and pistols and spells to pick off enemies from a distance. This is what the other classes are built around, as they don't come with the overpowered axe and armor. They're far more fragile, can't do any damage without thrown items or spells, and... it's what you're supposed to do. Play like a coward. ...Which is your standard roguelike, but... it feels so generic and off. The typos, the clunky controls, the boring level design with the optional interesting areas, the way difficulty goes from 0 to 100 without much inbetween, and the sheer lack of hook in playing... (there is little to no sound design, and visual effects are servicable but not really good.) I can't recommend this game. There's not enough depth or variety in how you can interact with enemies, the level design is bad, and it just feels like it needed more. The sheer fact that I'm struggling to convince myself to boot it back up for another few rounds. Not good.
Throwing items at enemies it’s nothing new, but what about enemies throwing things at you? It would be terrifying and exciting, right? This is the big highlight of Ebony Spire: Heresy, a dungeon crawler with kleptomaniac enemies who can use the same items as the player. Yep, this includes casting spells, using scrolls and drinking potions. Think twice before throwing that giant axe on someone – they can, and they will, throw back in your face. The game is turn based and grid based, but instead of having a whole party to control, you control a single character, like on most roguelikes. And as a roguelike, it has permanent death to shake things up (but you can turn it off if you wish), so take your time to think and strategize the best solution for each encounter. In total there are 20 levels – 10 regular levels and 10 portal levels, and more than 100 items with stats variations (blessed, enchanted, cursed, etc). The portal levels almost always have unique items that will really make a difference when you face boss fights, so don’t skip these levels – even if some of them are harder than normal, the reward you will get for taking the risk is worth it. Items and items positioning are always random, adding a lot to the replay value, and also, there's a mode with procedural levels, which make Ebony Spire a game you can literally play forever. The controls are exclusive for the keyboard, like some classic dungeon crawlers that inspired this game, and they’re very intuitive and easy to use (WASD for basic movement, Q/E for turning around, P to pick up or drop items, T to throw items, O to open doors, L to access the log, I to view inventory, Space to trigger or use an item, V to view/examine your surroundings, @ to check affinity levels and modifiers, M to view the map and F to favorite an item or weapon). The sound effects are simple, but very well done – you will know when there’s some enemy attacking you from behind just by listening to the attack or throw sound – and the soundtrack, composed by ambient sounds, adds to the suspenseful atmosphere. Don’t let the screenshots fool you – the graphics are very well done, with detailed sprites, and certainly looks way better ingame than in a screenshot. It’s also worth mentioning that the game is available under the MIT License and has TileD integration. This means that the code is easily accessible and you can mod it as you want, so feel free to change things in the game, add new levels, create puzzles or even use your own assets to create your own game. Developed by Bearded Giant Games, a one man show indie studio, Ebony Spire: Heresy will certainly please you if you like dungeon crawlers and roguelikes. It’s worth mentioning that there’s more content to come in future updates and the developer is very dedicated, passionate about his project and open to suggestions (I was a beta tester and many of my suggestions for improvement were included in the game). If you don’t fear a challenge, join the community, choose your class, grab all loot and throw them at your enemies. Oh, and watch your back – these kleptomaniac monsters will throw everything they can at you – don’t say I didn’t warned you!
I've tried and I just cannot get into this one. Ebony Spire: Heresy takes an out-dated idea and does more of the same. I take no issues with the price-point or anything, I just don't think it's that fun. Everything in here is below average. The biggest offender is the procedural generation. The levels look like someone took a bag of tiles and just threw them on the table. There are no interesting features or even any semblance that an intelligent being built these floors. Proc gen is a fantastic opportunity to make amazing worlds, and it was squandered here. And I don't particularly like the artwork. Some do, and that's great, but at the end of the day it's basic stock sprite work. Next, the controls are all over the place. So much so that I won't go into detail, but it is a mess. The UI also leaves something to be desired, right down to fundamental QoL options either simply not being there, or being hidden from us. While I could go on, it doesn't really matter because the whole thing is far too simplistic and brings nothing new to the table. Pros: +The price-point is fine and the concept could be fun if done right Cons: -It's not that fun -The proc gen is really bad -The sprite work is too basic -The UI is a mess, and so is the control scheme -Picking things up is a nightmare (did I pick up everything, or should I keep pressing 'p'?) -Inventory management is not fun This gets a hard pass from me.
This game is just bad.
