A pretty good metroidvania game if you know what to expect: a 10-12 hour long, old school, Symphony of the Night-esque adventure with a charming 2D art style that aims to evoke a cozy, Christmassy feel. This the game absolutely succeeds at. There are a few bugs, none of them game breaking but most of them annoying. The worst of these are related to input as in sometimes the attack button can become non-functional (very fun in a game where you're constantly pressing X), occasionally the "selected item" higlight / cursor won't appear in the inventory menus with a controller so you have to use the mouse to make it appear etc. In general the inputs doesn't feel particularly well programmed, the game can feel a bit sluggish in its response. Some of that seems to be by design which is strange considering that all the titles that this game was inspired by have crisp, fast inputs. Story wise if you like A Christmas Carol then what's here will most likely work for you: the themes are similar and the plot is fine for a game like this. The ending is a bit too abrupt though and the lack of voice acting hurts the few FMVs that the game has. In its current state I feel that the game is a bit underrated and it deserves to have more players. It's not Symphony of the Night or Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown but it's solid fun for a winter weekend.
I started to play this game during the holydays, unfortunately I had to interrupt momentarily, finally I finished today 25 of January. Its a very cozy M-Vania, the challenge is not too hard, if you equip and use all the tools properly. The art is beautiful and always is a pleasure to see the backgrounds from time to time, the characters are beatifully designed and I wouldnt mind to see an animated adaptation of this game (seriously) A ton of tools to equip and a surprising amount of ghosts to use to attack and enviromental progress (more on that later) Reading other comments I saw that a lot of people had problems locking themselves at one point on the map and couldnt progress, that never happened to me, no glitches or crashes. However, there are a few things that I wish where a bit different: -The game has a ton of tools to equip, but only 4 notches to equip them (if there is a way to increase them, didnt find it) the game would not hurt if it allows more tools to equip. -The ghosts offer passive skills (double jump, ballon bouncing, floating, etc) and action skills (attack with a steel ball which also works to break walls horizontally, for example) the problem is that some ghosts are not very useful and their skills could have been combined with other ghosts, (The steel ball ghost skill could be combined with the hammer wielding ghost to break all walls, horizontal and vertical) it would have been better if a ghost actually gives ebenezer their powers integrated to ebenezer moves OR make the ghost easier to select, since is not very dinamic, i would have prefered to pull the trigger button to open a select wheel and choose the ghost we need instead of cycling through the available ghosts side to side with the right thumb stick. and finally the music, not very remarkable, really. If you are on PC just use your music. All and all, a neat game with a few problems, I still recomend it.
It's the Christmas Carol game you always wanted!.... What? You never wanted a Christmas Carol video game? Ebenezer and the Invisible World is a weird game. Before I get into the weird stuff, let's discuss the game while ignoring that. Ebenezer and the Invisible World is a metroidvania game based around obtaining Spirit companions. It's very similar in concept (gamplay wise) to Ender Lilies. While the core game works and is enjoyable, it has a lot of minor nuances that lead to the game feeling bad and running less than optimally. First, this game seems to be VERY proud of it's 2D animation. The animation is nice, but it's pretty anoying to get stopped and have your momentum snuffed out because the game wants to show off its animations. Really, if this game had flow, it would be far more enjoyable. As it is, just about everything you do is going to cause you to halt momentarily, which makes the game feel a bit jittery. Second, the game lacks any real Juice. That is to say, there's nothing in the sound design or visual design that makes gameplay elements feel really good. Nothing feels really bad, but when there are so many fantastic games out their, you can't stand out without some juice. Now, onto the weird stuff. This game is a direct sequel to A Christmas Carol, a film about an old curmudgeonly man who's greed has led him to close himself off from the world. Over Christmas Eve, he learns to open his heart to others, and learns that Christmas is about being together with family. Then, he lives a long and fruitful remainder of his life. Except, this game says that actually, after having that runin with spirits, he's now a medium that is able to see spirits around him all the time, and interact with them. A spirit visits him and asks his help to change the mind of a young man who plans to massacre the entire lower class. You meet the three spirits of the original story who give you the spirits of children to help you on your journey, along with the rest of the dead people who decide to help you out. Plus, for some reason, Ebenezer Scrooge has somehow learned how to perform martial arts with his cane so he can defend people. Like, the game itself isn't bad, but the whole premise of the game is absolutely insane, and it's a really weird story. This game would have been better if it were NOT related to A Chritmas Carol, because everything I don't like about the story has to do with how it's tied to a story that does NOT mesh with this one. On top of that, the game isn't particularly good, even if it isn't bad either. I completed it, and you can definitely have a good time with it, but I would recommend playing Ender Lilies instead, as that game has the same premise, but has near perfect execution.
This is definitely a 'first game'. It's rough, unpolished, and does not like telling you anything. But with that said, I absolutely adore this game. What madman thought to make a Metroidvania game based on 'A Christmas Carol'? Such a rich world is born from a relatively simple story (in terms of world-building, they barely explain the ghosts in the book). It's so interesting and I never felt let down by this idea.
It's also got some of my all-time favourite executions of classic Metroidvania powers. The double jump and the glide are so satisfying and creative, the mirror teleport is fantastic, and the dash, while remarkably useless (yeah it's bad), looks so cool that I kept doing it.
The story, while simple, is still good, and characters are cool, but I'm beating around the bush here. Look at it! It's BEAUTIFUL! The art and designs are some of the best I've ever seen, I cannot get enough of it. That alone makes it worth a playthrough. Conclusion: A decent, if rough, game carried by an incredible concept and gorgeous visuals. Highly recommend.
This game feels so close to being great. I love the concept, love the art style, love the story. However, it bogged down by a few issues. The game play is mostly solid and I had fun with it, but there are a few issue. The combat ghosts I found to be pretty useless over all. The only exceptions were the falcon ghost and the stopwatch ghost. The falcon ghost in particular is pretty over power and trivializes the boss fights. There is also the prisoner ghost and the railroad ghost which break breakable walls and floors...... A MECHANIC THE GAME NEVER TELLS YOU ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The heirloom system and the weapons system on the other hand I mostly really liked. One other thing about the combat though, the save system and the health pick ups are very generous, so unless you stuck at this kind of game like me, the game will probably be pretty easy through out. As for other complainants, you music is passable, but I thought it was lacking. I ended up listening to Bing Crosby's classic Christmas songs instead of the actual soundtrack a lot. Also, while like I said I like the story, the ending felt really abrupt, like it just cuts off, not help by the the fact it ends with still images with no narration. This game is alright and personally I liked it, but falls just short in a few keys areas.
Esse jogo foi uma decepção completa. 1.
Simple, Elegantly done. Very nice graphics. Music is good and unobtrusive. Honestly, I really enjoyed this game and it scratched a similar enough itch to Symphony of the Night, or any of the DS Castlevania games. Well worth the time and money.

Wow, this game was great! I put this game on my wishlist because the premise just seemed so random but so awesome at the same time. A sequel to A Christmas Carol starring Ebenezer Scrooge in a metroidvania adventure? He attacks by smacking enemies with his cane?? Sign me up! The music is Christmasy and is pretty fine for ambience but the soundtrack doesn't really stand out. The gameplay is standard metroidvania fare. You could say that the entire game itself is average at best. It's not boring nor is it going to blow any minds. But that's fine. Not all games can be 10/10s and not all games are garbage. Some just exist because they can. What I will say is that the artwork is wonderful. The characters, their portraits, and even the final battle cutscene. Beautiful work that deserves to be displayed as a poster! I read some reviews that said that they had issues with the game crashing or bugging out. For the entirety of my 11+ hour adventure, I did not experience a single crash. The only bug I encountered was Ebenezer not dropping below the water even with the water breathing ring equipped, and the fix was to simply exit the room and reenter it. It only happened once and the rest of the game was smooth. I played this game on my PC. If you like platforming, some lite puzzle solving, and are looking for a casual metroidvania experience that is unique, I would recommend giving this game a shot! It's skewed toward the easy side, but there were a handful of platforming segments that were tricky. All in all, I had a great time with this one!
Ebenezer and The Invisible World by Orbit Studio and Play on Worlds presents a fresh and atmospheric spin on the Metroidvania genre, blending classic literature with dark fantasy aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, the game reimagines Ebenezer Scrooge not as a miserly man seeking redemption, but as a spectral guardian of Victorian London. After an encounter with the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, Scrooge is transformed and tasked with protecting the city from the sinister industrialist Caspar Malthus and his legion of Unrepentant Ghosts. This narrative foundation sets the tone for a richly woven story that explores themes of light and darkness, redemption, and the struggle for the soul of a city caught between the mortal and the supernatural. Visually, the game is striking, showcasing hand-drawn 2D environments that evoke the gloom and grandeur of Victorian London. The art style masterfully balances beauty and eeriness, with detailed backgrounds and hauntingly animated characters that bring the world to life. Lighting and color palettes are used thoughtfully to create mood and tension, immersing players in a world that feels both magical and foreboding. The soundtrack complements the visuals perfectly, featuring melancholic melodies and atmospheric soundscapes that deepen the sense of immersion and enhance emotional engagement throughout the journey. Gameplay in Ebenezer and The Invisible World adheres to the core tenets of the Metroidvania genre, offering expansive, interconnected maps ripe for exploration. Players gain new abilities by partnering with various ghosts, each granting unique powers that are essential for traversing the environment and overcoming obstacles. These powers also play a significant role in combat, where timing and strategy matter more than button mashing. While the combat system is accessible and well-integrated with the game’s supernatural themes, some players might find it repetitive over time, and the platforming mechanics, although solid, occasionally lack the precision expected from the genre’s best examples. The narrative stands out as one of the game’s key strengths. It carefully balances storytelling with gameplay, delivering a compelling tale through a mix of in-game dialogue, atmospheric set pieces, and environmental storytelling. The characters, especially Scrooge and his spectral allies, are well-developed, and their interactions enrich the game’s world. This blend of character-driven story and gothic fantasy creates a narrative experience that feels both familiar and refreshingly original, inviting players to engage with the game beyond its mechanical challenges. However, Ebenezer and The Invisible World is not without its shortcomings. Technical issues, such as occasional crashes and performance hiccups, have been reported, especially on some console versions, which can disrupt immersion and frustrate players. Additionally, some quest designs, particularly side missions, suffer from unclear objectives and excessive backtracking, which can detract from the otherwise tight pacing of the main storyline. These elements occasionally make exploration feel more like a chore than an adventure, reducing the overall enjoyment for some players. Despite these flaws, the game delivers a compelling and atmospheric experience that will appeal to fans of Metroidvania titles and gothic storytelling alike. Its combination of hand-crafted visuals, rich narrative, and exploration-driven gameplay creates a memorable world worth diving into. With ongoing updates to address technical issues and further refine gameplay elements, Ebenezer and The Invisible World shows strong potential to grow into a standout title within its genre. For players seeking a game that combines literary inspiration with immersive Metroidvania mechanics and a dark, moody atmosphere, this title offers a deeply engaging and thoughtfully crafted journey.
