It is an interesting take on the TD formula, but it's still the same old "Beat it this way, to win!" nonsense that has always plagued most TD's. The fun is in the "finding out" how the Developer intended for you to beat the level but that is also part of the rub. Which is why the game allows you to replay the wave over and over trying minor adjustments to your setup. The Shop towers are mostly well... rubbish. They are not better than your current towers and the Ballista is consistently the best tower meaning to win the game you don't get to use the towers you like as much as you would like. The "leveling" is also a bit... well nonsense. They level up by shooting which means putting them in a well placed spot for maximum effectiveness for their attack type will also mean it does not get to level up unless you spend beans. Again, it's all about how the Dev designed the level to be beat. It's not as fun as Defenders Quest, they did the leveling of units RIGHT and it's a real shame others have not figured out how to do this well despite having a good example. I had fun for 6 hours... I do plan to return to it later to see how it's development has gone, but it looks like another "fun up front" but "annoying at the endgame" TD.
Yes, Bean Beasts is visually stunning and an appealing concept hypothetically, but its gameplay damns it to being second-rate. For players who welcome a challenge, this product subtly bars players from hard mode in the beginning through making enemies tankier, resistences stronger, and resources remaining the same which is to say that the game is already stingy and that players in the early stages will not have the appropriate traps and bean beasts to effectively beat back the stronger hordes of enemies. There is a shop system that consumes gems to unlock upgrades and utilities, but gems can only be unlocked through rather stressful challenges and higher difficulties, which means progress is locked behind having to either redo levels for gems, as later levels will not let up on players if they do not have certain trap combos or upgrades that make selling and repositioning traps less burdensome. The lesson to be learned here is that progression should at no point rely on forcing players to redo levels to unlock utilities and upgrades when harder difficulties yield little rewards in a game that is already ungenerous in giving players resources. This artificially lengthens the game and makes what could have been an impressive $7 tower defense video game into a $14 stock pixel game.
Bean Beasts
Gorgeous game, challenging but lovingly constructed by a developer who clearly admires the genre. A surprising amount of depth and packaged with beautiful original music. Very hard to put this one down!
fantastic tower defense game! plenty of content, has a demo, active dev. beauitful art, fantastic music and audio. highly recommend!
6/10. Cute art, mixed gameplay. An emphasis on fewer towers makes it a puzzle game. Most levels have optional one-time challenges for extra rewards, adding to the puzzle game feel. Checkpoints for each wave let you experiment somewhat. But every fifth level is a completely different game - fast, non-stop, no checkpoints. There is no time to think, plan or learn, and you have to do the whole thing from scratch each time. The challenges are to do them *very* fast and perfectly. This is not fun. Respect for the dev and trying something different but manic sprints in a marathon puzzle game ain't it.
Half the trailer is showing bean beasts doing crazy attacks, but it turns out these are abilities that can only be used once every few waves (so maybe 5 minutes apart). There went the whole appeal. Balance for the first boss fight seems silly. 5 tries and no luck. I was on the 'hero' difficulty (2nd from highest) but since the game give unlocks based on difficulty played, feels like I am forced to play on the highest option available. Compared to the energetic trailer song, the music in the first several levels was hardly noticeable.
Brilliant tower defence game and honestly a steal for the price. Pros: -adorable pixel art -fun strategic puzzles -very catchy and well made OST -well utilized tower loadout, very few redundancies -cool boss fights with interesting twist mechanics that make you think on your feet -branching upgrades and buffs -meta progression -goldfish cons: -low stakes losses, restarting the wave is always an option, so losing isn't really punished. -ability value seems to vary wildly -boss fights can be a bit hectic and are somewhat of a tonal shift compared to the gameplay loop of rest of the game in my opinion. Still really like them, but I can see why some wouldn't -why the is that robo tower so OP lmao
