Jim wasn't always a studly super-worm. He was once just a spineless, dirt-eater with no real mission in his life...

I love the Earthworm Jim series, I really do. Now Im gonna say a few good things and a few bad things. Good: So far for me everything works just fine. I havent had any music or screen tearing. Controls are fine too (if you play DOS pure) if not Ctrl-F1 for keymapper. So technically yes you CAN USE A GAMEPAD!!! Just link the controls for the game to your gamepad....or joystick if that old. Bad: 640x480 256 Colors...I get it its an old version for DOS but cut me a break. I'm sure you can tweak the DOSbox options (notepad options) for a larger res, but really? WHY THE HELL NOT?!: As my memory serves there was a Special CD Edition that added a new level or two, added better Gravis Gamepad support and had CD quality music...Maybe there was an issue with porting the CD version over? Whatever your take on the game based on software, just know for me it will always be a classic. (Why didnt they port the CD Version of Pitfall the Mayan Adventure ether??)
Despite being a wonderful game on the Sega Mega Drive, the DOS version here is rather lacklustre. Even if you manage to assign a modern pad via Antimicro or Joy2Key, the response time leaves a lot to be desired. I've also fallen through certain platforms in the levels which aren't meant to be fallen through. To be fair, it looks nice enough if you adjust the dosbox resolution setting to 0x0. Best to avoid this and just play the Mega Drive version instead though.
It is a torturous game. + Graphics are amazing, very colourful, levels are in great detail. + Combat is great, you can shoot in 8 directions, hit detection is quite good. Weapons feel powerful + Animations are very well done. + Ending + Passwords allow you to continue the last level you've played. Still, why no infinite continues though? Game doesn't have score system or such, so why not include infinite continues? But atleast we have level passwords. + Boss battles + Soundtrack - Only 2 weapons - Level design is horrible. While all levels look really cool and unique their design is a mess. It's hard to guess there can you climb and there not. Sometimes the ledges you have to jump to are off screen, so it's guessing... It's hard to navigate. - Difficulty is unforgiving. Game is full of cheap traps, full of noob traps and lots of unfair stuff. - It's really short, game relies on cheap difficulty over lenght. It took me 4h to beat, but if not all the deaths and repeats the game is roughly 1h long. - Game reviewing from library is not working. Have to review it in store page. - Very often all sound, but exept for music dissapears. It randomly happens when I get hurt and again at random time I get hurt sounds reapear again. 5/10
I have never cared about a game on Steam enough to write a review until this one. This is a steaming pile of garbage DOS Box port that Valve and everyone else involved should be embarassed to have for sale. I should have paid attention to the reviews and avoided this game.
Terrible port. DOSbox with no fullscreen, controller compatibility is basically non-existent.
Terrible port. Save your money.
Not the best version of the game, but it's the only one available on Steam, so there's not much choice. I liked Earthworm Jim back in the day, as well as many other titles that had those quirky characters with fantastic idle animations and a bit of humor (which may not be so amusing to everyone these days). It made each game more unique. But about Earthworm Jim, the second level hurts my eyes as usual, but whose don't? The whole game is quite challenging if you play it on normal or higher difficulty. But you have to be a fan of platform games to enjoy it. Oh, it also works great on the Steam Deck. I hope to see some kind of remaster one day, but I doubt it will happen. One can only dream...
This port has been poorly done and is more frustrating than it is fun. I can't recommend it.
